Ok, so, I'm looking to pick up one of the current gen music games, and I am curious as to which is the best to start a collection with?
It'll be bought off Amazon and I've got $150 to spend, so, if anyone could recommend some good things to grab, I'd really appreciate it as I've got no idea which has the best starting package, so to speak.

Rock Band 2 for $99 for the full band bundle. The extra $50 for either Beatles Rock Band (software only), Lego Rock Band, or a $50 PSN or Live card to use for buying RB DLC, depending on your musical preferences. Look at the track lists for the first 2, and the available DLC for RB, and see which of the three appeals most to you.
I'd say pick up Rock Band 1 as well, that way you can export at the very least. It's probably cheap as hell, anyway.
Good point, add that to the list of possibilities for the extra $50 - it sells for $19 through Amazon now, software only, so you could do that plus $20 worth of Live or PSN card and have $10 left...
I'd agree with all the others here and say go with Rock Band. It's a bit more friendly to someone new to these games. Guitar Hero tends to skew higher in difficulty and is more suited to those who have been playing these games for a while.

Was just checking out Rockband 1. Its like $18. Though, its too bad all the blockbusters around me closed, or I'd just rent it and export.
But alright, RB2 it is.
But which do people think would be better, RB1 + $30 PSN, $50 PSN for DLC, or Beatles? My girlfriend is a huge Beatles buff, but I'm not personally a huge fan of them performing their own songs. So if anyone can give me a good reason to go for one over the other, I'd not argue too much. :P

Well, lets get specific here.
Buying RB1 gets you 58 songs (55 of them transfer to RB2)
RB2 gets you 104 songs (20 of which are pretty much garbage, though)
LRB gets you, what? like 45 songs? All of which are transferable to RB2.
So I'd say get RB2, then either RB1 or LRB (look at the song lists) and then spend whatever you have left over on MS points for downloadable songs.

Probably RB1 + $30 PSN if you really aren't into the Beatles music.
That said, BRB is really, really excellent - the dreamscapes are fantastic and really add something to the game. But if their music really isn't for you, then consider adding it at some point later down the road, and going with extra stock RB music for now.
Alright, so I think I've decided on RB2 Bundle, LRB, and just throw in a few extra dollars for RB1. Had to endure through some pouting regarding no Beatles, but just had to promise we'd get it later. :P

The Beatles songs don't export to RB2 like LRB and RB1's do, which is kind of the suck. Also, I don't think you can use BRB DLC with RB2...but you can use RB1 DLC with RB2.

That's definitely the way to go. I enjoy the core Rock Band game more than Guitar Hero, and then when you factor in all the DLC for Rock Band, it's a no-brainer.

I'm not a fan of the Beatles, but this I own this game. Not because of my wife, or friends, or anyone...but because of this limed fact. It's pretty damn cool and you don't have to love the music to love this game. Though, for me, I don't plan on buying any DLC.
If I remember correctly, you can also import the RB1 songs onto RB2 except for two, which are Enter Sandman, and Run To The Hills, the latter being downloadable.

Go with Rock Band. Playing a rhythm game is about enjoying music, and Rock Band has a vastly, vastly superior selection of music and consistent DLC support for more music.
Guitar Hero has become more hit and miss as time has progressed, and DLC has been mostly atrocious. That said, Guitar Hero: Metallica was wonderful.
I've always been a guitare hero person myself. The world tour kit is more extensive (And I think the GH5 stuff is even better) Although I never really buy any extra songs. If you think you would buy the DLC songs, it's worth looking at the lists and deciding from there.

If they did a full band kit for Guitar Hero: 5, I'd say that.
They don't.
Go for Rock Band 2 and get Guitar hero: 5 with an extra guitar so you've got a full band set. (Assuming you don't get 2 guitars with RB2)
GH just feels sucky in comparison these days, I don't like how the GH songs flow.
The DLC for RB adds so so much. My favourite game of all time, hands down.
Also Beatles : RB is a total trip, an incredibly well put together game. Get wasted and play through the whole thing over a weekend, and it feels like a journey.
I am an absolutely huge beatles fan.
That being said, avoid beatles rock band to start with.
While it is Anglos game, there are half the tracks of a regular music game and it only will play beatles in the future.
I like guitar hero world tour. If u can find it they recently cancelled the bundle and it can be found for $99. It's got a great drum kit, good guitar and excellent set list on the disk.
There are also so many guitar hero themed games you can buy into now for around $20 used that it's a good system to buy into.
One other expenditure you might consider: if you hunt around, you can grab an old wired guitar for $10-20 so you can play 4-player (since the SE is just 1 mic / 1 drums / 1 guitar)
This looks shady as fuck and lacks any Verisign or reputable logos for ecommerce.
It's been around forever, and it's legit. I got it myself back when it included the AC/DC track pack, too. Yes, it's only the RB1 instruments, which sucks, but it works in a pinch - this being Christmas season, he can probably find a better deal on RB2, though, and just rent RB1 to export the songs.

The RB2 software, one guitar, one drumkit, and one mic.
I hate rhythm games but I still like Rock Band.

Your second list includes all the World Tour DLC, so for equality: BAM
Funny enough, I know drummers who think opposite, mainly because they prefer the GH drum kit setup.
If RB1 instruments suck (and I assume they do compared to the latest ones), then that's probably why it's so cheap.
