Is Wii Sports really the game of the year?

I recently read this argument about the recent Time Magazine here.

http://teenagefanboy.blogspot.com/2007/01/is-wii-sports-really-best-game-of-year.html

I was wondering what everyone else thinks. Personally, I thought Wii Sports was the 3rd or 4th best game on the Wii last year, let alone for the whole system.

Time has a lot of weight in the news world, I just don't really want them talking about my video games.

    Shit. Well, there's always 2008.

And Wii Sports is fun, but not Game of the Year. It's definitely a worthy freebie, especially after going without pack-ins at launch for so long.

By Game of the Year, do we mean solely for the Wii or all consoles?

Because...you might argue it for Wii, but not all electronic gaming venues as a whole.

Time Magazine has a different perspective on videogames. The type of perspective that Nintendo is directly trying to appeal to with games like Wii Sports.

So of course it makes sense.

When you look at it from an every man's perspective rather than a gamer's perspective Wii Sports is definitely a lot cooler and more inviting than Zelda or Gears of War. To non gamers those games just look like confusing hyperactive timesinks for geeks, while Wii Sports is a lot simpler and dude it's like you swing the controller and your dude swings the racket how cool is that?!

Time declared it game of the year for all consoles.

I guess Wii Sports might of been the most innovative game on any console this year.

The thing I like about wii sports is that my family can, at the very least, bowl and golf with one wiimote. And goddamn, additional wiimotes are hard to find.

It is definately one of the weaker games, though.

I like it more than Boxing, if only because I still can't get the hang of certain moves in it.

I would not call it the best game of the year.

But it is by far and away the most accessible. It reaches across the aisles to non gamers unlike anything I have seen since pong.

Golf is glorious, and my favorite Wii Sport.

Also, Wii Sports has done a lot. Anyone can pick it up and intuitively play it and have fun, no matter who they are.

Gears of War, Zelda.. They may be the most refined games in their genre, but what have they really managed to really accomplish besides being fucking awesome games? It's like what Tycho said about Gears of War.

I got 3 extras for Christmas. My wife had a hell of a time with it until EB Games said "just preorder them" and while they came one at a time they all came by xmas.

I'd imagine this is not a frequently preordered item.

It's not the BEST game of the year. But it's the game of the year, to me atleast, Wii Sports did something that no other game up to it has done and that is get every person that has come in contact with it to play it, and want it. Sure you can have an awesome experience with TP or Gears of War and they're better games but no other game had such an impact as Wii Sports did .

I just want a golf game exactly like Wii Sports but with more courses and clubs. I might have to settle for Super Swing, but I really like how Wii Golf works.

Wii Sports exists to show you potential. I mean, we already have posts talking about awesome sport X and Y would be if they were only fleshed out better.

And once some publisher (perhaps even Nintendo) announces an upcoming tennis or baseball game, you'll think back to Wii Sports and get really excited.

Having 4 player Wii Golf tourneys with some buds, nothing better.

I wonder if every Wii owner already having so many Sports in one package will hurt the sales of future sport games. I know people who genuinely like and watch the real deals will buy Tiger Woods '08 Wii and whatnot, but what about gamers, like myself, who aren't really into sports? I haven't managed to track down a Wii yet, but I can see myself saying "well, I already have a Golf game on WiiSports...eh."

Last time my dad touched a videogame was a flight sim on his Windows 3.1 machine.

If you're as sold on a Wii Sports sport as I am on Golf or Bowling or Tennis, believe me, you'll be dying for a full fledged version of the sports game.

I haven't played with a single person (including a few older people, and otherwise non-gamer people) who didn't think the amount of holes Wii Spolf had was way too few. If any of them got a Wii, they would probably buy a new golf game when it came out.

While I think Wii Sports is definately not the best game this season, I can see it being game of the year. I cannot count the times I've brought my Wii to a friends house, shown him / her Wii bowling, and hearing the reaction "omg thats the coolest thing ever". Maybe thats more of a reaction to the Wii itself, but Wii sports shows off its console in the best possible manner, and isnt that what every game tries to do in the end?

I wouldn't mind a combat fishing game on the wii

smash your trawler into your opponent to throw him off-center and lose that big catch!

Go online head-to-head and co-op with a captain and a fisherman for double the fun!

I personally have never bought a sports game on a console since the Genesis/SNES era, and I can honestly say that I would probably purchase a 'real' version of any of the Wii Sports, when I'm less strapped for cash. Wii Baseball is great, but I want to do so much more with it.

The only sport that I think is absolutely 100% perfect as is, is Wii Bowling. I <3 Bowling so much.
