Home PS3 repair for dummies.

So my older brother's launch 80 gig is crapping out on him. He described what sound like a bunch of disk read errors (not recognising there is a disc in the drive, freezing up when the game needs to read from the disc, etc), and at my prompting called Sony support to describe the problem. They quoted him $180 for repair (we're in Canada), and he decided to take it apart and clean the lens on the BR drive - since that tended to extend the life of his PS2s when they behaved the same. I did not suggest this to him.

Of course, Sony won't take it back, and apparently now he's researching BR drives online, trying to find a way to repair it himself.

Personally, I think the best thing for him to do is to see if GameStop will take it in trade, and just buy himself a new Slim. Unfortunately, that's out of his price range. I feel really, really bad for the guy, so I thought I'd ask here and see if the collective wisdom of the internet has any sage advice.

He has had it since launch? It's three years old? And he tried to repair it himself? Bad idea. Even worse is the idea of trying to pawn a broken system off on Gamestop. He should probably just suck it up and buy a Slim. o_O

You can buy replacement lenses for the ps3's blu-ray drive. I'd link it, but the site also sells things that may help with that which cannot be said. I'm sure ebay would have them too though.

Maybe you could suggest he buy a YLOD 80gb and swap its drive into his system/

I helped my girlfriend take apart and swap the blu-ray lens on her PS3. It is very easy provided that you make sure that their is no disc in the system when you open it up. And if you do forget that very essential step, there are lots of helpful youtube videos showing you how to re-align everything.

Unfortunately, the new lens stopped working a couple of months after being installed. :(

I didn't want to say so earlier, but I have a YLOD'd ps3 with a perfectly working blu ray drive. Considering that ps3 will just be a doorstop with the blu-ray drive or without I'm willing to part with it. PM me if you like.
