If you want to argue archetypes at least do it right and read some Joseph Campbell and tell me about the Heroe's Journey.

Pochahontas in Space is neither intelligent nor clever. Nice try, everybody!

The thematics of the Hero's Journey are not the problem I have with the movie. It is a heavy-handed message that Imperialism is Bad/Naturalistic Culture are Good/Techno-Cultures are Bad/Noble Savage etc. etc. And it does so by ripping off, without abandon, a well known science fiction short story.

You've almost got it! I think you watched the movie and inserted your own ideas instead of actually paying attention to the movie though.

Where did you get Imperialism? If anything it's a movie against Corporations. A company goes to the planet to mine a mineral; they build schools, try to trade, build roads, offer them everything and in the end decide to knock down the tree anyways. The head corporate guy even feels guilt about killing natives!

Naturalistic culture? Okay, sure. Techno-Culture bad? What? Did you not get the doubling going on between the two races? The fact that the alien culture is one giant fucking internet world? How did you miss this? Humans connect to robots, smurfs connect to dragons. Cool.

Noble savage? Oh lord, this tied with "imperialism" is pretty fucking silly, come on. You can do better than some 100-level post-colonialism undergrad analysis here.

    Oh come on now.
The head corporate guy feels 'guilt' in the form of looking back mournfully. This doesn't make him more of a good-guy, it goes into how heavy-handed everything in the movie was. And the military head of the corporation was everything a Disney villain is supposed to be, right down to the scar on his face.

The fact that the Na'vi won is where you can draw most of the stupid messages from. Like I said, the invention of gunpowder was enough to defeat technologically similar cultures. Having Jet-planes, unmanned aircraft, missiles, and guns will defeat spears every single time. "But they flew on dragons" doesn't exactly help out here.

The message is very clearly about how much better the Na'vi are from the humans. Look at how attuned they are to nature, that's how they won, we have something to learn from their culture. Hence the Noble Savage.

And call it Imperialism or Corporatism, call it what you want it. It is a tired storyline, and this movie did nothing to add to it. It was cartoonish in how ridiculous it was and yet it tried ever so hard to be taken seriously.

I guffawed when the mech soldier brought out the combat knife in the final fight.

    I guffawed.

There was one thing in Avatar that seemed so unrealistic to me that I found it disappointing. It wasn't the floating rocks or the way the machines worked or anything. It was that this movie is supposed to take place 150 years in the future, and yet the scientist lady was smoking cigarettes. Seriously? I can see office-putting and neckties fitting into the future, but not that.

Allegedly, each 1/3 of the game (Human, Zerg, Protos) is going to be as long as the first SC game in total... so... they feel justified in splitting them up.

I'm hoping they come around and realize that is a stupid idea.

I think each one is supposed to be a expansion, meaning they plan to use the 2 expansions to add units and counters to the game and add more choices to fight with while at the same time making a big story plot.

Also its supposed to come out soon I hear

(Kind of like frozen throne for warcraft III were they added 2 new units 1 new hero and 1 new building per race)

    I'm in Savanners now, woo!

I fixed a SCAD mistake on my CAPP report (a print-out that shows what the registrar system thinks you still need to take to graduate)......so that's good!

Also my first class wasn't until 5pm...I slept in like woah! ...and it looks like it'll be a good class - the professor seems really nice and understanding (about me wanting to do a concept art portfolio and not waste the class doing an illustration-based portfolio, simply because it's a class in the illustration major. She's letting people do what they need to with the assignments so the class suits their own needs. Woo!).

And in an hour I get to have another concept art class! Only this one is going to be ridiculously low-key, because it's more for sophomores / juniors! My EA professor is teaching it, too, so it'll be really nice. We're going to get a LOT of time to complete each assignment (unlike in the EA class), so that means I can do a really excellent jorb on each one. Wahoo! :)

My professor for tomorrow's class is also great - he was one of my fellow classmates in a class I took a year or two ago, and he's a really nice dude. Excite!

i don't understand people who get in a hump when they see someone criticizing something they liked. the only way you learn things is by asking questions. internal consistency supports believability. flaws are worth discussing because otherwise we'll never move past them.

that's pretty much what this forum is about.

They might have changed their initial plan, but at first they were going to make you buy the complete human campagn, then the complete zerg campaign and then the complete protos campaign.

You'd get full online play with any one, but they were definately not expansion packs
