I don't know how plausible this is, but it occured to me, and it would actually turn jailing into an actual punishment, so I'll throw it out anyway.
Is there a way to disable the viewing of bbcode for the jailed person? For example, rather than making it so a jailed person just can't use quotes to post images, they instead couldn't see proper quotes and posted images? As it stands, when a few jailed people start quoting, messages quickly become unreadable. This way, threads would remain perfectly readable by non-jailed, while it would become hell to follow for jailed people.
Yeah, I used "jailed" and "people" way too much there. Anyway, how plausible is this?
Its certainly possible. Im not sure from an ethical perspective if I like this or not....

I don't see the point. If you make the forum unreadable to them (or nearly so) by removing their ability to read the posts, you may as well temp ban them and be done with it.
It's like that old one, it's better to kill someone outright than leave them to starve.
If jailed people are quoting (as opposed to having their quotes broken because they were made before they were jailed, how bout just ignore them.

Just throwing an idea out there, is there any reason why allowing jailed users to quote would cause a problem? I have trouble thinking of ways this could be abused, and it would solve the ugliness.

That was suggested when Ramius first did the jail system.
Part of it was to stop them being asses by creating massive quote trees just to be annoying.
But I believe it's easier just to kill all bbCode than disable all but one tag.
Jailing is more like public humiliation than a real punishment. Temp banning for doing something only a tad wrong would suck. The way I see it is this-
Jail- "Hi, I'm new" thread, avatar stealing, small stuff like that (in SE++ at least)
Temp Ban- Breaking any of the rules in the official rules thread
Permaban- either you come back as an alt during your temp ban, or you goatse/tubgirl/lensman the forums.

See most of that stuff you put under jail, I'd put under flaming.
Think of the anologys in realy life, doing stupid shit means your mates take the piss out of you, and if you do it too often, nobody like you. That is the equivilent of flaming. And that is what I believe is justified for the occassional stupid act. Including the likes of Hi I'm new and avatar stealing.
Jailing is an official punishment, the equivilent of the cops picking you up and giving you a fine. As such it is only applicable when actuall rules have been broken, or the stupidity reaches a level where it warrents "offical" notice.
Temp bans should be used for things where jailing has proved inefficient. For example, continued trolling after jail, or posting ASCII goat.se while jailed.
except that you were the one who jailed us all for quote-tree-ing
so clearly we disagree where the line ought to be drawn
I disagree. Of that lot only the first was questionable, and I probably wouldn't have made that if I wasn't pissed of at the time anyway. After that, all of you were doing it to get jailed and make a point. All of those were justified.
That's my last word on the matter.

On a realted Jailing not. I think if a Mod or deputy jails you they should at least drop you a PM with the reasons why. Like A Duck! jailed me and I really have no clue as to why.

I wouldn't have jailed you, but I sure as fuck would have told you to knock it off, and if you'd reacted in the way you did to Orthanc there would have been trouble. You're a good chap poop (what an odd thing to type...), but you might want to leave this one.

But, if it adds a significant overhead to the servers, I guess that's the last thing we need right now.
