So I'm thinking of getting a DS for PAX, but I'm not sure what multiplayer games people are likely to be playing. Do any of the popular ones have cartless multiplayer? Thanks!
If you're going to be on a train or plane with a few people, Final Fantasy: Crystal Chronicles Echoes of Time (or the older Ring of Fates) is good co-op, but people won't be playing it as much at the convention proper.
And my boyfriend had a lot of fun with trading info with people on The World Ends With You. I'm going to be sure to bring my copy of that with me this year.
Chrono Trigger! Wanna do some hot monster battles! Also, Final Fantasy III would be nice so people can send letters back and forth directly instead of using Wi-Fi to unlock side quests.
Mario Kart for sure. I was in the queue room at the last PAX and just started hosting a game. A few minutes later, 4 people had joined and we were off racing.
Pokemon HeartGold and SoulSilver will be released March 14, if you are into those I suggest one of them.
Thanks for this. I was curious of when the next ones came out. Didn't know it was so soon!
Gotta get my pokemonz on!

I have to second the votes for Mariokart and Tetris. Definitely the best multiplayer DS games.
Not to be overlooked though would be runners up such as Mario Party 8, Zelda, and Metroid Prime: Hunters.
I'm sure there's more but in your original post you also mentioned you would be buying the DS specifically for this trip. If you've never owned a DS before there are TONS of great games to be played!!! Such a fantastic little system. If I can recommend one single-player game you will really enjoy, I would say buy Kirby: Canvas Course.
Thanks to this forum I picked up Mario Kart DS over the weekend...game is awesome and even was able to play vs against the wife...again, great game and thanks for the suggestion, I'll def have it at PAX with me
List of games I picked up on ebay today: Mario Kart DS, Mario Party, Tetris DS, Worms: OPen Warfare 2, and I picked up pokemon pearl today at gamestop.
I'm going to have to pick up a new copy of Mario Kart, I've never been able to figure out where it went. I had Pokemon Gold back in the day, so I might go for the silver remake this time. It's more than a month away, but I am way to excited for this already.
And my boyfriend had a lot of fun with trading info with people on The World Ends With You. I'm going to be sure to bring my copy of that with me this year.
Awesome, I'm definitely bringing TWEWY. I've already gotten all the threads and pins, but I guess you can make a store so other people can buy stuff you own? I've never had a chance to use Mingle Mode with other people, had to leave it on for weeks getting "aliens" to level those pesky MPP pins.
Just a warning: With all of the DS, PSPs, smartphones, computers, etc blasting out wifi you will have some difficulty with connecting systems and getting a game going. It's all part of the fun though. I definitely recommend bringing TWEWY, if only to set it to mingle mode and see all of the wifi signals it picks up.

Yeah, my friend and I ran into quite a few people there that had TWEWY running. Even if you're not trying to evo your pins, it's great for leveling them up.

I would have to second the yells of Tetris and Mario Kart. Waiting in line to get in on the first day of PAX, I was standing right behind a couple of guys having an epic battle on their DSs. I asked what they were playing, and they told me it was Tetris, and asked if I wanted to join. I got slaughtered, but it was still great fun and my first real experience at PAX.
I played Mario Kart while waiting at the Freezepop concert. I was looking around for a place to sit near one of the massive screens (too crowded to stand near the stage), and saw a few people playing Mario Kart. I asked if I could join, and then proceeded to have the most fun I have ever had waiting for a concert.
I must say though, do not put your faith in the Wi-Fi for any reason. Not for internet, and not for networking. This is a convention in which most goers have AT LEAST one digital device on the Wi-Fi at all times, making it spotty at best. The most trouble will happen in the queue room before the place officially opens every day. It took me over ten minutes to load a single web page off the Wi-Fi the first day.
there's an older game I have called "club house games".
I absolutely LOVE Clubhouse Games.
I used to work at a large call center with other 20somethings and we'd constantly have large groups playing with us. A lot of those games are a blast. Bowling/Darts/Spades. So much fun.
My friend and I were super good at the bowling. Getting in the 200s and stuff. There's a certain line you make just to the left of the front pin and it'd make a strike all the time.
Hmm...I'll have to grab Mario Kart. I plan on bringing Zelda: Spirit Tracks (though I haven't started it yet), Mario+Luigi: Bowser's Inside Story (the reason I haven't), some form of FF: Tactics, because that game hooks me hard, and maybe Chrno Trigger (though haven't played it in forever, after getting partway through and being dumb and stopping for about 8 months, so I forget what I was doing...In some dino castle place).

Worms: Open Warfare 2 has some sync loss issues with single-card play, but muti-card works well. Clubhouse Games and WordJong are good for casual play. Geometry Wars: Galaxies has some awesome vs, co-op and mini game modes. And there's always classics like New Super Mario Bros, Mario Kart, and Tetris DS.

I've never owned a DS before but PAX has finally convinced me to buy one. I have a feeling I'm going to be a tad behind everyone skillwise but Tetris is Tetris, right?

I do have a copy of The World Ends With You, but have yet to start it. Long story short, I am about 2 1/2 years behind on single player video games. (As you can tell by my signature the most recent 360 games I've conquered are GTA IV and The Orange Box).
I have a few other games on my pile of shame before TWEWY comes up, but are the multiplayer features I've seen mentioned here good enough for me to skip right to it? Would I get anything out of it if I was say, halfway through the game when I got to PAX? Would I get significantly more if I had already beaten the game?

The multi-player is a mini game. It's kind of fun, but not many people play it. Everyone suggests bringing TWEWY to PAX because it has a special mode where it will look for other TWEWY cartridges and share items with them. It will also give you items based on finding any other wifi signal. So while you're walking through a line with your DS open and set to that mode you will get a ton of stuff.
It's also a very fun game in general, definitely worth playing.

I'm definitely bringing Clash of Heros. Love the game, and expecting to see a lot of it thanks to heavy penny-arcade recommendations for the game. Otherwise, probably chrono trigger, and mario kart DS. Gonna bring my PSP though too. I'd love to get in some kickin' Monster Hunter hunts in while I'm at it.
Yes! PAX needs more Monster Hunter, send me a PM if you want to try and meet-up with my group of hunters. There should be three of us coming and we love finding those rare other hunters.

I just realized Shin Megami Tensei: Strange Journey comes out 3 days before PAX East. I think it has a demon trading system or something, so I hope I can get far enough in it by that weekend.

Sounds like a bitchin' idea! A monster hunter meetup at some point around the con would be a pretty good idea
I hate to admit it, but I may have fun enough with the Pictochat that I've...ahem...NEVER USED. lol

has a version of Nintendo's FIRST EVER game... a japanese card game called Hanafuda.
the game calls it "koi-koi" (why, I don't know, but...)
I'm a sucker for this (then again, I'm going to PAX more for board games than anything else), and will be looking to see if anyone would want to play.
