This happened to me! I'd never heard about the scam at the time and until I read about it a few years later I thought it was just a really surreal thing that had happened.
a roommate of mine got taken in by that thing last year
me and the roommate I actually liked made fun of him
wait
hold on
not only is this still done...but people actually buy the speakers?
I need to sit down
You know why exiled Kenyan prince emails keep showing up in your inbox? Yeah, sorry to break the news to you.
I stopped getting those years ago after I helped him with a small investment opportunity.
My older brother bought speakers from the back of a van once.
They were pretty decent.
Maybe he overpaid but they were still pretty decent speakers. I think he still has them to this day.
By the time I walked away they were offering them to me for like 15 pounds. I doubt they were full of rocks or whatever, they were probably just hot. I GUESS I'LL NEVER KNOW.

It may not be impossible to cheat an honest man
But it's rarely worth the effort

I have a step brother who was approached by someone who had some really good TVs in the back of his van that he was selling for cheap... or maybe they were speakers.
He assumed it was a scam or stolen goods or something so he turned them down. Turns out the deal was legit, but it was too late.

this is the same dude who dated a chick he picked up on craigslist and banged her that night
who then later got so drunk at a party, took part in an orgy and got part of her clit bitten off
and WAITED TO GO TO THE HOSPITAL because she was under her parents insurance at like 28

Legit as in they we're actually good quality TVs?
Or legit as in they weren't stolen?
Because that is what I assume most people think they are buying when they buy things out of the back of a van
And if you're doing that, then you deserve to get ripped off

They were legitimately good TVs that were just overstocked or something and they needed to get rid of them for some low price. (Or home theater systems, this was a few years ago so I forget, either way lots of money potentially being saved)
Anyway, he has his dad who is a cop check up on the guys in the van because he thought they were stolen and it appears everything was actually on the up-and-up.

The thing is, at least down here, the product is never usually stolen or "hot".
They are often "legit" goods in the fact that they are actually manufactured (usually in China), and imported and sold out of a warehouse under a legitimate business name. It's just that the quality of the product is usually very, very low. Like, not worth the price of the electronic components used to make them.
Also the sellers are quite often pretty "slick" guys who target people who appear to have disposable incomes and can sometimes use some pretty effective/convincing tactics/jargon to convince people, especially the people who aren't necessarily tech savvy. They even go so far as to run outwardly legitimate looking websites (until you try to delve too deep into them) and carry "real" invoices and uniforms.
I mean, at the end of the day, it's still the person's decision as to whether or not they are going to buy shit out of the back of a van, but I'm just saying, they can be pretty clever about it.

I'm just going to pop in here and say that thanks to the necropost I am rereading the thread about Veretas and that whole scam thing and man all the shit leading up to the reveal that they actually lost money in the scam makes the majority of people in that thread look like geese of the silliest order

Goddamn, I'd forgotten about that
He says there that he doesn't want to say too much because the investigation was still ongoing
Did he ever give the details?
This was basically one of the worst things I've ever seen.
Well
Not literally, it is like the worst of the sixth tier of worst things I've ever seen.
