Playstation 2 on the cheap?

So I recently returned from my friend's apartment and was introduced to something magical, Guitar Hero II. Holy shit this game is fun. I just want to play it...for many hours.

Problem: I don't own a PS2.

I need to find a PS2 on the cheap, possibly in questionable condition. As long as it works and allows me to rock out in Guitar Hero I'm fine with it.

Can anyone point me in the direction of PS2 on the cheap? Possibly bundled with Guitar Hero II and a controller for additional savings?

So far I've looked at GameStop selling "certified" used consoles for $100, but I think I can do better. There's eBay, but all the one's at reasonable prices seem to be broken in some way. And yes, I realize I should have bought a PS2 like 4 years ago and taken part in the gaming goodness that ensued. Part of the reason I'm willing to get a PS2 for this is that I will also be able to play the myriad of games I've missed out on.

Thanks.

If you've seen gamestop's lowest price, and ebay's lowest prices, what makes you think you can do better? Electronics can only be so cheap. Unless you're looking for someone to hook you up with some brotha they know selling 'wholesale' PS2s out of the back of his van, that's pretty much it.

    Check craigslist, I guess.

Isn't there an X360 version coming out soon?

If so, and you've got a 360, then problem solved.

A PS2 cheaper than $100? That's fairly cheap as it is.

Also keep in mind that you'll be paying a couple hundred for Guitar Hero + the controller.

Isn't Guitar Hero 2 with the controller like, 80 bucks?

GH1 + controller bundle can be had for anywhere from $50 to $70,
if you hunt around. And GH2 + controller bundle is $80.

OP: Hunt around CAG (cheapassgamer.com). Personally, I think that anyone who's willing to sell their PS2 for less than $100 nowadays has probably manhandled it to the point where it's not worth the risk.

Well then, I guess I need to start buying my games in the states. Up here they're sold seperately at every store I frequent ($60 + $60) plus taxes is like $503

I've received two PS2s for free. The first was a Japanese console that I got in exchange for fixing another PS2 with some minor issues (dust on the lens, alcohol + q-tip for the win). The second was a North American I got for free because my friend got it for free, in non-working condition, and didn't know where to start fixing it. As it turns out, the lens stopped working completely, but fortunately Japanese and North American lenses are identical. After a quick swap, either one will function.
The moral of the story is a two parter. First, talk to your friends. Asking around may give you opportunities to grab a PS2 (or anything else really) for a lot cheaper than a gaming store, as long as you're willing to do something in return. Second, the cheapest PS2s usually require fixing. As daunting of a task as that may sound, they're usually not that hard to get working again. If the only problem is constant disk read errors, there's a good chance that it's caused by the infamously finicky laser. Just brush up on a few lens adjustment FAQs and treat the thing like you would a computer (keep grounded).

i'd recommend ordering Guitar Hero 2 from redoctane directly http://redoctane.com/gh2-multibundle-w.html Get a free bag for your guitar too, :p Wish I had ordered from there instead of EB, since I eventually shelled out for a wireless controller as well.

$130 for a new PS2. Plus a warrenty, because Sony's notorious with bad replacements.
