I got one of the first collections of this for a birthday many moons ago, and along with the original Bloom County will remain one of my favorite comic strips of all time
My three favourite comics of all time are Calivin & Hobbes, Bloom County, and The Far Side. That they all ended about the same time was hard to deal with. I still have the last Calvin & Hobbes strip I cut out from a newspaper.
I pretty much stopped reading newspaper comics after that.

I have all the individual collections and treasuries, as well as the big fancy complete box set thingy.
The day I realized that Calvin pretended to get tackled by Hobbes every day to hide the fact that he was getting beat up at school was a day where I made myself sad.

But Hobbes isn't imaginary.
He's not real, either, but he's not just something Calvin made up.
it really speaks to the quality of the strip if deconstruction of this nature can bum people out. Like the idea that Calvin was in any part using Hobbes to justify bad parts of his life to himself depresses me in equal part to that re-imagined picture that was posted here not long ago of Calvin and Susie and stuffed Hobbes going on a walk or something together making me really happy.

Poltergeist.
I'm just saying they cause trouble but aren't mean spirited. They are simply beings of chaos that want to have fun. And what self respecting being of chaos would not wish to be Calvin's friend?
Edit- Ignoring of course Calvin himself

I genuinely treasure Calvin and Hobbes as a work of art for more than nearly anything I can think of.
I would honestly do very regrettable things to actually own the Complete Collection set.

nah I don't guess he's done much of that, outside of refusing to sign autographs
and I respect him a lot, can't say I wouldn't be the same in his shoes
but he certainly hasn't endeared himself to fans of his work
$100 though...
