I'm pretty sure there is a single player game as well.

    Based on what?

Where I'm going with this: if there isn't a single player campaign, and the entire game is nothing but capture the goddamn flag, then why bother rewriting the entire setting for game that doesn't even need a plot?

    Is the setting rewritten?

    Yea its a franchise reboot.

They have toned down the massive re-writes (tied the corporations in to Aztechnology and Renraku, I believe), and gotten the timeline to at least have some sembalance of matching up with the real one... But the particulars are still changed, such as Dwarves being essence vampires.

seriously, i'd make a note in the OP that we recognise it's not true to the original stuff, that it's in no way indicative of what 'Shadowrun' really is. Something like that, so people don't feel the need to come in here and reiterate it every other post.

It is Shadowrun and is very much indicative of what Shadowrun is this generation.

Again, this thread is dedicated to what Shadowrun is going to be in this translation of it ... we don't need to hear "it's not the Shadowrun I played as a kid/it's not an RPG/it' s not the TRUE Shadowrun/etc" spammed in every thread.

And I'm certainly not going to foster that sentiment in the OP as one's feelings regarding Shadowrun are wholey subjective.

The bottom line is that people have different feelings on FASA's decision to take the franchise in the direction it has gone. Crying about it though every time a Shadowrun thread starts, is getting old and fucking annoying which is why I'm asking it stays out of this thread.
Uh, there already is a Shadowrun for this generation. It's called 4th edition, and it's not a whole hell of a lot like this game. (Although, in fairness, it's not a whole hell of a lot like any of the other SR editions. But at least it uses the same excellent backstory) So no, it's not really indicative at all. However, that fact doesn't invalidate it as a game so I can kinda see where you are coming from. The game itself at present is really more important than what people think it should have been, and the present is what really should be discussed.
    RedShell wrote:
I played the P&P back in the day and I don't see how this isn't what Shadowrun 'really is'. Guns, magic, elves, trolls, technology.

Except there should be a Panther Cannon.

    Panther_Assault_Cannon.jpg

I understand being annoyed that it's not an RPG, but if there was ever an RPG that called out for a CS style makeover, I guess it would be Shadowrun.
As cool as a panther cannon would be, this Shadowrun is set in the past so even if the plot was set in the normal SR timeline, the panther wouldn't have been invented yet.

The existence of this game just made me remember how many FPSes there are on the 360. Is there room for all of them, or will this get overlooked in favor of something else?

This one is trying to separate itself by being on Vista as well.

The teleport feature really reminds of UT99 for some reason. That is a very good thing.

I loved how in the first video the sniper was teleporting through floors to safety and then back into the fight.

I think this is going to be the type of game that is easy to "pick up" but takes months to "master"

Personally all the teleporting made the game look overly frustrating. Maybe if there is a good counter to the TPing, or a longer timer on when it can be used again, I won't rip my hair.

    Beta FAQ wrote:
How many people will get into the beta in the long run?

We don't know for sure as it depends on how much people play but we're talking lots of people, probably over four thousand.

How long will the beta last?

At least until March, maybe longer.

How many non Microsoft employees are currently in the beta?

    about two hundred.

How often will you invite more people into the beta?

We expect to be inviting more people on a regular basis, probably weekly.

Will you be posting an announcement every time you invite more people?

No. Maybe for large groups but sometimes we will just be inviting a few people.

Does post count on the forums have anything to do with getting into the beta?

    No.

So posting on the forums has nothing to do with getting into the beta?

We will be intentionally inviting a very small percentage of forum members into the beta (literally about 1% of beta people) but we will be looking for quality not quantity. Posting intelligent questions, showing you've read the faqs and being up to speed on the game itself counts a lot more than straight post count.

Hey! JoeKiller got into the beta and I didn't! How come?

We have well over twenty thousand applicants. A lot of the selection will be done at random, especially in the later waves.

Why not just invite everyone who apped?

We are shooting for a specific number of games per day to get information for our dev team. That means shooting for a specific number of people then seeing how many games we get and then inviting more and more until we hit our final number.

If we invited everyone who apped it wouldn't be a beta, it would be a demo. -)

How will I know when I get into the beta?

You will receive an e-mail giving detailed instructions on how to download the beta from XBox Live Marketplace.

    Is the beta US Only?

No. The vast majority of the current members are USA only but we are hoping to change that as the beta expands.

    Yea its a franchise reboot.

No. Just... no. If I aquired the rights to make Zelda board games, and used the name to make an Risk clone with ponies shooting each other with the triforce-gun, would that constitute a franchise reboot?

Way to miss the point, everyone. Let me make this simple:

    Shadowrun RPG = Good
Shadowrun FPS = Just as good
FPS that has nothing in common with Shadowrun called Shadowrun = Bad

I'm sure this might be a good game. But why do they have to rape Shadowrun by using the name? At the very least give it a sub-title.

And in the OP, under "What is Shadowrun?", please mention in some way that the name has a different origin, one that's still alive and well, with 20+ years of fluff that this game ignores every bit of.

Um....this game has a lot in common with the pen and paper game. There are a lot of changes (uneccesary ones imo), but to say this game is completely different is dumb. In fact, someone earlier in the thread even said that FASA was adding more relation to the original game so it'll be even more like the p&p.

I still don't particularly like that they've decided to make changes at all, but I've still got hopes that the game will preserve the spirit of the Shadowrun P&P. Which is entirely possible. Although, to be honest, the screenshots don't really give that feeling so much. For one thing, all of them are set in the daytime. Most good runs take place at night.

The only gripe I have is that the game is pigeoned hole'd into team combat. If that were for the online component only, and the single player campaign was more, Halo/Perfect Dark/You know not a Unreal Tournament single player campaign, I can honestly say I'd buy a 360 just for this game, because I'm that much of a filthy whore.

Who knows maybe the single player campaign could turn out like one. But like stated before, does the 360 have enough room for another FPS? I hope FASA can build off of this and put out some more content and keep the IP chugging along.

In all honesty that's like saying does the PS2 have room for another JRPG.

There's always room for more quality titles. The 360 is an American centric system thus the glut of quality FPS's which cater to North American tastes.

    You would be wrong.

Edit: And regardless of what I think about this game, I doubt it will sell very well. It's just too different. I still don't fully understand it, and I've read about it in a few places. This sort of confusion tends to turn most consumers off.

Also, the lack of singleplayer is dissapointing. I mean, Phantom Dust had a singleplayer mode, so this game should as well. Even if it's just a bunch of pre-planned theme matches strung together into a loose story.

Just going off of what I've seen in the videos so far:

People seem to have no weight what so ever. They can jump really high and seem to just hang there.

Gun combat looked alright, but the moment they went melee, the sword "fighting" was a quite a bit jarring, though I may be biased due to Dark Messiah.

Level design looks like it needs serious work. Circle strafing and bunny-hopping are a lot less exciting than using cover and tactics to pin, then dislodge your enemy.

Perhaps this maybe overstepping the thread's bounds a bit, but Shadowrun, the RPG, involved a fair bit of stealth. Incorporating some stealth elements into this probalby would've been a good idea.
