Hahaha I'm watching the relay online and someone just asked if they could get a light for their cig off the flame. I am just reminded of Dale Gribble saving the flame from his cig.
I was mildly inconvenienced by the olympic torch on tuesday when it went by my barn and the horses decided to play "chase the low-flying security aircraft". They made a huge mess of the field and were an absolute nightmare to work around.

They cast a shadow like a sundial in the morning light. It was half past 10.
So I was watching the luge training live online starting about 30 minutes ago. Um, I'm not sure if video is up anywhere, but this guy from Georgia (the republic not the state) is most likely going to die. He went up and over the wall doing 90mph and hit a pole. They were doing cpr, called in a rescue helicopter etc, but the dude is probably dead.

Kakhaber Beridze, with Lelo newspaper in Georgia, told the Star's Petti Fong that he called his press office in Vancouver, and was told the luger was taken to hospital. “He is okay,” they said.
I know luge and skeleton are extremely dangerous sports and you get into them knowing that, but I'd also think that tracks would be developed where you can't go hurtling out of the tube.

especially considering this is supposed to be the "fastest track in the world"

I mean...make a higher wall.
He would have taken a pounding, sure, that was unavoidable. I just don't think he needed to be flung against the damn poles.
I was just reading another article about this. It would seem that there have been more than a few crashes on this course and that even the sliders are expressing concerns about the overall safety of the track.
I mean, these people are top athletes who push themselves beyond what any of us here will ever accomplish and even they are going "yeeaaa...this isn't good."
I wouldn't blame a single slider for backing out. It's not like they've got brakes on their sleds. Going fast is one thing and these guys can control it, but man, you can't fuck with physics.
British luger Kazimierz Kay-Skrzypeski was killed during practice two weeks before on the Igls Olympic track, and Australian skier Ross Milne was died during training for the same Games.
by the way, here's a link to the higher res, version. In slow motion you can see exactly what happened.
He loses control at the top of the final curve, flailing his arms wildly. The momentum of the turn carries his sled down into the opposite wall, and he is flung sideways onto the wooden railing.
In his final moments, his body turns completely around and the back of his head collides with the steel pole, killing him.

Also, now that we know he's not dead and is "doing ok", is there a video replay we can see?

They purpose build these tracks to be super fast, but does it have to be so extreme if they're just racing each other?

From a while back, but it is more unusual to actually get snow in Surrey.

Absolutely tragic.
