Waggle the Wanderer [Shiren Wii Thread]

Let's talk about Ferrets Gone Wild. Let's talk about...

shirenwii_boxart.jpg

The new thread for the new, possibly improved (verdict not in yet) version of Shiren the Wanderer is here on for the Wii and it needs some discussion. Old Shiren DS thread.

The game is a roguelike; don't let the publisher tell you any different. It boasts random dungeons, a cohesive story and an amazing assortment of items, equipment, effects and upgrades to keep your interest. It's a throwback to the old-school approach to gameplay and graphics, but don't let the dated SGI-style art fool you. This game will kick your ass if you give it enough time.

This isn't a Let's Play or anything, but this thread obviously isn't going to survive based on my thread-making skills or the marketing/popularity that Shiren has going for it. I'm going to share my impressions and hope others will relay their experiences. Hopefully someone else actually went out and found managed to find this little gem.

I'm playing on normal mode, which so far has proved easy for someone who rescued Pekeji and cleared Bufu's dungeon in Shiren DS. I "died" once so far, because I didn't realize my companion's death was a game-ending occurrence. Because death only means you go back to your last save, you don't have to start over like you did on the DS version. If you are playing on Easy mode you keep all your stuff. If you are playing on Normal mode you keep your level but lose everything that wasn't in the bank/storage. You can then replay some of the old dungeons to replenish your stocks, much like starting over worked in the DS version. Regardless, the fact that you can save anywhere on the main map and freely backtrack to the storage/shop/bank area from any overland map area makes it much friendlier.

After about 5 hours in I have defeated 4 of the bosses that have been advertised for the game. The difficulty has been steadily ramping up and the last dungeon/boss area I went through was pleasantly hectic. I feel like the bosses were part of a tutorial mode, and now the real game starts...

Update: Some later-game boss tips at the bottom of page 2... FAQ coming soon!

I have unearthed a melding pot by risking the purchase of an expensive unidentified jar at a shop. I'm lucky I didn't end up with a worthless jar or something. I'm excited to find out about all of the new weapon/shield upgrade possibilities, as there are already new types of weapons and shields available to me.

I'm searching for sites that list some of the items I can work with. I'll post what I find.

We got the original cover art from the Japanese game. That's more that we can usually hope for, right?

Of course, he's just being sarcastic.

I've made it through the first four dungeons, still in 'tutorial' country. No losses yet, but the challenge is slowly building up. So is the irritation: I had a couple of things rusted already and one of my Holding Jars was irrecoverably stolen. Fortunately, I've gotten enough supplies that things haven't gotten too serious. But things are looking up for the game.

Oh, and on a side note, might it be a good idea to link to the old thread somewhere in the first post? And perhaps a post should be made in the old thread leading to this one?

    Done and done.

I too had two of my holding jars taken by those damned birds just today. I lost some most of my rice balls and herbs, and quickly learned to stack one of each per pot so I don't get completely robbed of food. Don't put all your rice in one basket, I guess. I fortunately found a plethora of plating scrolls to avoid rusty stuff.

Oh hell, that was unexpected (just past the four initial bosses):
so now I've gone back in time 1000 years, lost my levels and my stuff, and they turned my ferret into a raccoon? I'm sure they'll give my stuff back, but I didn't think I was playing a Metroid game... :P Also, can I keep the raccoon? Much cooler looking.

Well, I just suffered my first loss in somewhat embarrassing manner in the fifth dungeon.
Catfish's Nest: Somehow, despite Asuka inheriting Shiren's equipment (Demon Sword and Demon Shield+1), she was felled rather easily on the first floor. In the first room, she got surrounded by three enemies, who got cleared out with the help of a Knockback Staff and Lightning Scroll, but having only one Healing Herb, the next encounters were not so good. Recovery Staves do no good when there aren't any allies to use them. I probably should have used an Escape Scroll... I think I shall go back to gather more supplies in Eagle's Fortress.

EDIT: And in quick succession, a second loss. Go me.
EDIT2: Yeahhhh... doing something wrong here, haha.
Quick losses in Eagle's Fortress, the Portal dungeon, and Centipede's Den. Not having allies or supplies is tougher than expected!

Yeah, by that time it ramps up in difficulty pretty good. I found some killer stuff on my very first run or I imagine I would have bit it at least once during those parts. I'm hoping my momentum carries me through for quite a while.

One of the best things about this game is weighing whether to take all your awesome gear or to store it in case you die. In the DS version I usually ended up just storing my 2nd rate gear so I don't have to start from scratch if (when) I die. So far I'm doing the same thing in this version, but if I lose the gear I have on now (three or four attributes on both shield and sword) it will suck.

UPDATE: OK, the difficulty is here. I just got my ass handed to me upon finally entering the mansion. I got up to the 7th floor, having thrown my shield at Asuka while under the influence of a Gaze. I don't know where it hit her or what she did with it, but it's gone. No shield is pretty much a death warrant at that point, and after all our healing items were exhausted, every jar of hiding hidden in and my staves swung I finally fell.

Having faced hundreds of these situations on the DS, I somehow can't believe that I get to start over at the entrance [strike]with all my good stuff intact[/strike]. I'm actually thinking this game might be an improvement over the DS version at this point. (note: all my awesome stuff is gone. This makes Normal mode very similar to the DS version. The difference is that you get to start the game over yourself. =P)

I have only tried it with the classic controller. That said, it's excellent. I quickly figured out how to switch between party members or go to full control without using the menu and everything works fine. I haven't had any accidental diagonal issues or anything. It is easier to do diagonals than with the DS, that's for certain.

I recently noticed that you can use the right analog stick to alter the perspective temporarily when you are in a dungeon. Not a big deal, but a nice touch.

Yeah, on Normal you lose all your items after a defeat, but keep your levels. On Easy, you get too keep both your items and levels. (Of course, there are dungeons that restrict your items, levels, money, and allies.) I'm on Normal difficulty, as it should be. :D

I'm also playing with the classic controller, and it's working out great. There are a few differences from what I remember from Shiren DS, but it's very similar. My only gripes so far are that the game moves a little slow (which tempts me to use the b-button movement too much), and the shoulder buttons need to be depressed fully for them to register, which takes a little bit of patience.

Normal mode: only for manly men. (Or womanly women?)

Yeah, I guess I don't shoot arrows or rocks enough for the shoulders to be too big a deal, but they are probably the one flaw of the controller. Otherwise the octagonal outlines around the d-pads make me happy. Between the graphics and the controller I do feel like I'm playing a gamecube game, but I felt about the same way the first time I played RE4 if that's any indication of how I'm liking it.

To me, the original DS game was all one big tutorial to get you ready for Fay's Final Puzzle. I'm still amazed I actually beat it. Of course it took a couple months of constant playing and building a spreadsheet to track item effects and pricing to identify.

Anyways, if the unlockable hard modes are similar in 3, I'll be in roguelike bliss.

I got my ass handed to me. Twice.

    I made it to the
burning forest inside the mansion and barely scraped through 10 levels to face a burning rickshaw.
. I'm really happy with the amount of bosses that provide a break from the mazes, and they made an effort to keep things fresh. I was thinking that the initial few that were advertised would be tacked on during the "tutorial". It doesn't seem that way anymore.

Anyway, I waded through 10 levels to get to that boss, and had almost no healing items left when I got to him. Word: status-changing, knockback or switching staves do NOT work on bosses in this version. (They did in the DS version). After the last remaining revival herb was consumed and my associate was nearly dead I tried to use an escape scroll. Word: escape scrolls do not work during boss battles. D: Ah well, soldier on.

Earlier I had stuffed some really nice gear into my storehouse jar. I later arrived to find out that there is only one page of storehouse available and mine had already been full. I put all that gear into the void and was really pissed at myself when I realized it.

If you think you've outsmarted the developers and are ready to hatch your cunning exploit you are probably about to die:

I set out and built up my gear on the mountain path, then headed up to the
    Centipede den
to get some better gear before attempting to go back into the hellish area that killed me. I came upon a shopkeeper that had air bless and soil bless scrolls, a shadow sword and some other decent items. He only wanted like 5500 for the good stuff, and I had about 375 gitan. So I figured it was time for my first attempt in a long and brilliant career of thievery.

I position Asuka over the exit stairs and tell her to wait there, then march down and loot the whole shop. I have knockback, shadowbind and switching staves ready to go. I guess I should have listened to the little voice that said something was amiss when it wouldn't let me switch characters while holding goods I hadn't paid for, but I figured once I was out of the shop I could switch back and have Asuka get us out of the level. The shopkeep teleported to one exit to ask me to pay. I didn't, then I left out the other door (note to self: fake left, go right next time -don't try to leave out of the door closest to your true destination when first exiting a shop.)

Thief!!! Like the DS, when you steal a ton of guards and guard dogs appear on the map and you have to fight your way through them. I had popped a light scroll in advance so I can say without guessing there are precisely a shit-ton of them when you steal.

I couldn't switch back to Asuka or enter Full Control mode. I basically could not regain control of her in any way. She had one turn to wait like I told her and was surprised when a guard dog appeared directly next to her and then one-shot her. Starting over again. :p

Just cleared the burning forest and I'm liking the game a lot more now. Still haven't had a death yet, but when I run into a new enemy there is some dread over what it might be able to do.
Asuka has become a bit of a liability for me at the movement, I didn't plate her gear thinking I could just let Shiren deal with the rainy types... and of course she gets teleported right next to a Mr. Monsoon, and now there are some big negative numbers on her gear and I have nothing to replace it with. D: Thankful a haste herb made the rickshaw boss a easy enough.

I ran into a few floors with dragon orbs but I'm not sure how they work, the tutorial page says to use the Barrier scroll in the same room as the orb, but reading it just heals my party... Do I have to throw the scroll at the orb?

I just finished the two areas after the
burning forest, the water mountain and the ravine of the dead
. My asuka ended up with a 10 armor shield taken down to 2 (-8 modifier). The game is nothing short of scary when it comes to what they might throw at you, and that's good by me.

Dragon orbs: I searched all over but I finally had to learn by experience. Push "a" on the orb and it will open your inventory. Select a sword (haven't successfully done a shield). Sword will go under the orb. Use a barrier scroll when you and your party are at least one step away from the orb. Read the barrier scroll from anywhere in the room to get things started.

The most imporant part is to wait [strike]until it says "The dragon orb resonates with power"[/strike] as long as you can before walking through the barrier and taking your item out. Then you know you weapon is cooked sufficiently. It should have a new property that gives it extra damage against all types but its own. I currently have a katana with a spirit seal and one with a dark seal.

Well, that how I figured it works... for some reason it isn't doing anything though. The barrier never goes up when I use the scroll. Interestingly though, throwing the scroll at the orb gave me the mesage that my inventory has become heavy. Whatever that means.

*edit* Got it to work that time. Found one in the second room and let it bake until the wind started blowing. Cursed katana +11 Becomes a Blessed katana +15, Excellent.

*double edit* Seems that you can't use the Barrier scrolls on orbs that are next to a wall. That must of been what was happening before.

Also, Atlus says the game is out in stores for reals now. So go buy it people.

Yep, and if you put a second barrier around it.(If you have enough room for one.) It will upgrade twice as fast. With just one up it seems to take quite awhile though.. only getting a +1 every other time it says it resonates.
