The Guiding Principles and New Rules document is now in effect.
And it is 2 years old today!
So I thought we should have a thread to talk about how awesome it is.
Also if you haven't played it, go buy it (and a ps2 or a Gamecube if you need one) like today. Totally worth the price. Because it may be the best game ever.
Man, it took me while to warm up to it, but god did I warm up to it.
Shit, the only thing I'd change is make the Chicago Typewriter like, a tenth as strong as it is currently. Give me a reason to spray bullets god damn it.
I've had the PC port preordered for ages. When and if it gets to me, i shall attempt to write a review. Hopefully it'll play like Cold Fear but better.
I just beat it recently on Gamecube, and am now giving some mild attempts to the mercenary missions.
Honestly it's like the best game ever. I'm not sure if I'll play through it again though. It was longer than the average game, which is good, but I know I'll just end up frustrated again when I can't find all the gems for the various treasure pieces. Maybe I'll buy maps next time.
Also: Double-chainsaw guy in that one mercenary map. What the fuck? One chainsaw is enough.
So, what am I missing out on story-wise from the extra Ada stuff in the PS2 version?

The plot's really the last thing to worry about in RE4, but there are some little sorta neat things.
[spoiler:3d12504e92]Ada is the one who rang the church bell, Wesker actually told her to KILL Leon, but she decided not to. She finishes off Krauser. [/spoiler:3d12504e92]
The fun part is how it parallels Leon's campaign with moments like climbing the catwalks and ramparts to get to the red rocket launcher at the last fight. It also has this awesome warehouse-ish section that is my personal favorite bit it in the whole game...you're zipping around on her grappling hook dodging explosions and causing a general ruckus...it was so fun.
Just re-bought a copy last week so I can play it on my Wii. Not quite got round to some yet.
When I finally get round to some zombies coming up the hell right now action, it will only be my 3rd ever playthrough. I'm filled with a mixture of anticipation (running up to villagers and knifing them up good) and trepidation (bastard Regenerators).
It's a great game, but very overrated imo. It's like 4th best game ever on gamerankings, which is fucking ridiculous. I thought it was great, but I'd give it like a 9. Which is very high still. Really, I don't get where all those 9.8s and shit came from. It's good, but that good? Really? Despite the camera still being too close to Leon and the controls still being MUCH too stiff? #1 could be justified as a (lukewarm) design choice, but the controls were not nearly fluid enough for my liking.

You forgot taking down a battleship single-handedly, which is also excellent.
The later bits of Separate Ways basically are as good as the main RE4 single-player, but without re-using maps (which the early bits, alas, do)

Godamnit, I'm going to end up buying this twice. I want to go get the $40 pack that has RE4, REmake, and RE0 for Gamecube(I'm currently borrowing a copy of the GC version of RE4), and I'll have to get the PS2 version for what sounds like awesome extras. What pissing me off even more is that it'll be crap graphics and I'll probably have to play through the main game again.
I could never bother to get any good at Mercenaries, but I still played it a fair amount... It's just too hard to keep track of all the stuff going on in a given stage. "All right so I should climb this ladder and throw down a grenade and whirl around and jump through this window and wait shit where is my head."

I'd say that the extras make the PS2 version slightly better, but don't buy a PS2 just for them. And there are plenty of people who say the GC version is better.
[spoiler:80a0cea01c]They're probably just bitter about the lack of exclusiveness though.[/spoiler:80a0cea01c]
RE4 gave me of the most vivid gameplay memories I've had in years.
It was late January, shortly after the game had come out, and there was an epic snowstorm in the Northeast; I was working nights at that time, so I came home shortly after midnight early Saturday morning, right as snow was starting to hit. I had the next day off, so I didn't care about the weather, and I was completely and utterly sick anyway, and my roommate was out of town, so I had the place to myself. And I was going to be snowed in the next day anyway.
I was about 40 percent through the game when I got home. I played from about midnight until about 5 a.m.; I was sick, so I tried to get some sleep, but two hours later I gave up and went back downstairs to play. From 7:30 that morning until, oh, 11 p.m. that night, I managed to burn through the rest of the game, play through Assignment Ada, unlock Mercenaries and get at least three stars in each area. It was an entire day of playing RE4 through an illness haze, and I could not put the Wavebird down.

Totally awesome.
*OBJECTION!*
If you were too sick to move and played with a Wavebird all day, wouldn't the batteries die or at least give you the warning signal?
Sorry, just excited for PW 2. Never played RE4. Dont see a need to now, since I already know all of its ups and downs, watched vids, talked about it on boards, storylines, etc.
I made the mistake of introducing the game to my compulsive, addiction-gripped roommate and he played the game non-stop for a week straight. He went to class, eat, sometimes slept, but other than that he did nothing else but play the game over and over. His memory card is almost full of New Game Plus saves. I probably played it too much too, I unlocked everything, but not to the crazy point that guy did.

Two AA batteries last about 40 hours in the Wavebird.
A good deal longer than that, I think. I don't even remember when I last changed my batteries, but I've 60 hours into Zelda alone without changing batteries.

I thought it was 40, but in any case, my point is they last a lot fucking longer than "all day".
It's me, the guy who bought RE4 for the cube a year ago this week at a $10 Toys R Us sale and still hasn't played it, because of the temptation of other games.
Well, I'm here to announce that, just yesterday, I finally finished up all the other distracting games/rental games I needed to finish and return to Red Octane, and I'll be popping this thing in my Wii tonight.

The opening sequence is heartstopping, and it only gets better from there on in.

It's pretty ok..
I'm just not getting used to the controlls, though.
Man what?
What system are you playing it on?
I'm not very far, so I didn't want to say too much.
no, just no. It is superb.
God I hate lack of hard-drive.

Mine are:
Stage 1: 105560
Stage 2: 91210
Stage 3: 93060
Stage 4: 101830
I haven't played in months; I'm sure it will be forever before I can match those again, if I even can match them at all.
moving along.
