Tournaments:
Perfect Dark (N64)
Saturn Bomberman
Street Fighter II Turbo (SNES)
Random Atari 2600 PvP - single elimination, no game repeated
And this time we have something special for the first 5 people to complete a classic console challenge:
A rare CCFP button
So swing by and remember what it feels like to get your butt kicked by Battletoads.
A man who could afford $50 had a pair of boots that'd still be keeping his feet dry in 10 yrs' time, while a poor man who could only afford cheap boots would have spent a $100 on boots in the same time and would still have wet feet. -Vimes
can we bring our own games here? I don't think they had river city ransom at Pax Prime. And well, it is a pretty bitchin' game.
Yep...you can bring your own game and even your own console. But we can't hold them for you.

I think the 2600 tourney should be Combat a la 2005.
I'll bring the cart if you need!

Swing by and compete, I think you will like the Random PvP tourney. The games on Combat will be included in the mix. But no one will know until seconds before their round.
Also what's the policy on bringing ... uhh ... extralegal copies of games for some of these consoles?
If it's a cart I want to examine it before you insert it into the console, otherwise no harm, no foul.
The consoles and most games are being generously lent to us by Joe Santulli, a collector/game store owner in NJ, so I just want to make sure nothing that can potentially damage his gear gets anywhere near them.

I've actually looked into it and I have a converted Speccy that transmits a composite video signal. This means in theory it could work on any video device that has composite input. The other issues are power, which can be dealt with by using a step up transformer, and the use of a tape deck to load the games. I'd actually use a memory card adaptor or Microdrive instead, as no one wants to hear the screech of a Speecy as it's loading stuff. Or maybe they do, hmmm
Just as a litmus test, how much interest do you think having any British 8 bit computers at PAX would generate? I'm just not sure how they would be received....

I'd be interested in checking those out. As an older gamer I love the classics and it would be cool to see what you guys across the pond were playing while I was wasting my time on MegaMania and such.
I happen to have a pretty extensive Atari games collection, what games will be there? I can bring a bunch, too, all really good condition and playable.
Essentially we pick a game, determine the parameters and then leave the game in the console for some period of time and people can come by and try to beat the challenge. Yes I am being a little vague because I don't want people to know the details of the challenges ahead of time.
But this year we will announce the details of each challenge using Twitter (@pax_ec_ccfp) when each new challenge is up and ready to go.
We are also looking into using twitter to allow people to sign up for the tournaments. So if you are interested in potentially competing in one of them, please start following us.

We will have an assortment of common carts out for people to just plug in and play. There is no fixed list as yet. Feel free to bring yours if you want to play any of them, but we cannot be responsible for them.

one of the challenges at pax prime was to get a total time of under 30 seconds on some mario kart 64 level. It was a dirt bike map. I was unfamiliar with the exploit but I saw a guy do it.

If it makes you feel any better, I think classic starts at Pong and ends with the Vectrex.

Hey Shervyn, I help to run a classic console outlet in Reading ( a bit north of Boston). Let me know if you need any additional gear, consoles or games. I will keep an eye on your twitter. Where on the PAXEast floor will you be located? I will definitely stop by to check things out.
I have just acquired a Jaguar, Lynx and TG16. Now I have to see what's floating around for it. I'm pretty sure I could dig up a Tempest 2000 cart somewhere!

Any word on what dates the different tournaments will be on for those of us ridiculous people who like to plan things out a lot? Also I'm very interested in the Perfect Dark one. I assume that since this is classic console freeplay, it will be on the N64, and not following the rule of playing everything on 360 wherever possible?
We will announce both the sign ups and the actual tournaments over twitter (@pax_ec_ccfp) we have general times in mind but will refine them as we go along so they are subject to change.
Perfect Dark will actually be played on both the N64 and on the 360. So in order to win you have to be able to play both versions well as your overall tournament standing will be determined by your place in both brackets.

Thanks for the offer, we should be good. We are going to be right next to the Classic Arcade and Wyvern Theater on the 3rd floor.

Cool, rather busy during PAX, so not sure if I will be able to enter any of the tournies, but I will definitely stop by and say hello. Thanks for bringing classic consoles to PAXEast!
Bumping this just to say that the classic console challenges were my favorite part of PAX. Thanks so much for making my first convention an awesome one!
Still sad I couldn't beat Mike Tyson :P I WILL HAVE MY REVENGE

Just wanted to give a big thanks to the enforcers who ran the Perfect Dark tournament on Saturday. Didn't catch their names but one was wearing a chicken on his head, and they did an excellent job of turning chaos into a good tournament.

ChuChu Rocket!
Power Stone/Power Stone 2
Marvel vs Capcom/Marvel vs Capcom 2
Jet Grind Radio if there's some sort of quickie challenge mode.
Don't know what the good racing games are.

"gay" and "rape". You keep on using those words. I do not think they mean what you think they mean.

I am going to go look for my copy of Re-Volt tonight.
Also, I can count to "boat".

Never played much Saturn either so that would be nice.
I'm up for anything 2600, and can loan an Atari 130XE if there's interest (will play any 8-bit tape).
Same.

anyhow, any chance you'll have a copy of NBA Jam for the SNES or Genesis on hand? All the news lately of the new NBA Jam has me feeling nostalgic.

Done. Should hurt less now. This is why I am not a graphics designer.
