"Carpe Diem" & other stories of impact

JigrahJigrah Registered User regular
edited March 2010 in Social Entropy++
There are many quotes out there that have given me pause, made me think, and have been a part of my decision making process.

"Carpe Diem" is often referred to as "Sieze the day". Recognize the power of this statement. Take control of your day, render it yours in absolute power. What have you done to wrest the power of the day from others to yourself? Talk to a pretty girl? Tell your boss you deserve a raise? Maybe you simply ripped apart your vehicle and made it your bitch. Anything that amounts to taking control of your future applies here.

"Fortune Favors the Bold", this proclamation traces its routes to Virgil, author of the Aenied, although Wikipedia says it came from a playwright author named "Terence", who wrote "Phormio".

Mostly it means that s/he who risks most, wins most. This is also seen in gambling when I wanted to bet a clean grand on the New Orleans Saints but my credit card didn't accept the bet. I would have won $1,700 but instead I get to complain about what would've could've and happened. Or, as my dad explained it best, history is written by the winners.

The purpose of this thread is to talk about what sayings have taught you most about life. What quotes have lite the fire in your heart, to succeed above and beyond the regular populace.

Many readers assume that I enjoy writing such sexual scenes, but that’s not true at all. When I’m writing such a scene, I’m so embarrassed and ashamed that I don’t know what to do with myself. But each time, I say to myself: Haruki, this is your duty! You must not stop!

I love how the OP is written in the exact form you're taught to write paragraph-length responses to questions in like third grade and uses the exact same first sentence the OP was using when he was 8

prompt: write an essay about a quote that has changed your life

"There are many quotes out there that have given me pause, made me think, and have been a part of my decision making process. "

At first I assumed this was George RR Martin.

Thanks for giving me a new author to pursue.

that's not really the point of that saying

it infers that there is no such thing as luck, and the way for a person to be "lucky" is to actively cultivate their own luck. It is saying that nothing will come to you by accident and you have to work for what you want.

It is similar to the aphorism "God helps those who help themselves"

Then in which ways have you kicked ass?

90% of success in my field requires communication...how you communicate and the way you approach situations in which you will communicate.

The other 10% is being in the right place at the right time.

Therefore, I wake up and say, I'm going to get shit done today. I'm going to be professional, succinct and intelligent and I am going to fucking impress people.

    That is all.

Life is on the wire. The rest is just waiting.

It's immoral to let a sucker keep his money.

    The rule is this:
You spot a man's tell, you don't say a fucking word.
    I finally spotted KGB's.
And usually I would've let him go on chewing those Oreos till he was dead broke.
But I don't have that kind of time. I've only got till morning.
Not even Teddy KGB's immune to getting a little rattled.
