For the next few months, I'll be living in a house where multiplayer games won't be an option.
This is tough because I almost exclusively play games like TF2 and MW2 online.
So I'm looking for some good single-player experiences. I mostly play shooters, but I'm looking to branch out to other genres.
Some games I really enjoyed that aren't straight shooters:
Oblivion, Mass Effect, Fable 2.
I really liked Oblivion and would like to try more games like it, but I've never really gotten into RPGs.
Good single-player shooter suggestions are welcome, and I also enjoy a good RTS.
Games don't have to be too modern, but I'd prefer something made in the last 8 years and that I can pick up on Steam for less than $30.
So far I'm thinking of picking up Dead Space, but would really like to try an RPG like Oblivion.

Fallout 3 is pretty good too. Fallout 3 is bigger, Stalker is a better shooter. Hell, get both.
And yeah, ME 2 makes ME 1 look bad.
Bioshock for giggles, Knights of the Old Republic, which I should play right now.
If you are talking steam then go for Valve games: Half Life 2, HL2:Episode 1, HL2: Episode 2, HL2: Episode 3 (haha who are we kidding...) and Portal are all singleplayer mustplays.
Anyway, Dead Space would be an excellent choice, so go for that one.

Knights of the Old Republic 1 and 2, if you're willing to dip back a few years, are neat. Though you've played ME which is a more polished form of those I'm sure, so it might feel cumbersome I guess (I haven't played ME yet).
If you don't mind a clicky sort of game, there's Torchlight. Diablo-esque.
Crysis and Crysis: Warhead can be picked up together for cheap
-Mirror's Edge (More of a first person platformer. I assume you've heard of it? All the replay value is in wonderful time trials; if that's not up your alley, expect to get maybe 10 hours out of this game)
-Torchlight (You ever played Diablo? It's kinda like that. clickclickclick loot and whatnot, with all the strengths and pitfalls associated with the gameplay. Demo available.)
-Star Wars: Republic Commando (Wonderful FPS, possibly the best use of the Star Wars license in the last decade. It's squad based with, and this is key, a squad that does not suck. Note that there are some incompatibilities with this game and certain ATI drivers. If you can get around that, you will be rewarded with an awesome fun game.)
Let's Play Final Fantasy 'II' (Ch10 - 5/17/10)
It doesn't meet your price point, but Mass Effect 2 really is worth the current price of admission. The skill system has been trimmed/streamlined with the combat playing more like Gears of War with powers. It's also much darker in tone.
Fallout 3: GOTY edition won't meet your price point either, but since you really liked Oblivion you should really consider it. However, the price point is worth it considering you're getting 5 DLC packs that sold for $10 individually. Vanilla Fallout 3 is $30, but if you're going to get the game you really might as well invest the extra $20 for the GOTY edition. This game alone could keep you busy for the next few months, especially if you factor in mods.
This right here. I've only owned the game for about a week and I've already put 27 hours into it.
edit: okay, 28.6 hours. See? :P
Dawn of War 2 and its expansion, Chaos Rising. Really good squad level RTS's. They throw away base building and give you persistant squads which level up and gain wargear (items).
Company of Heroes. Another really good, squad level RTS. It's a world war 2 game, but it's still incredible. It has minor base building.
World in Conflict. In the style of the old Ground Control games (same studio), it's medium - large scale RTS with no base building. You gain resources as you play and airdrop in reinforcments. It's set during the cold war, in a 'what if' scenario where the Russians invade the US. If you have the hardware, the game can look stupendous.
RPG wise, I'd recommend Dragon Age, if you can stand less than impressive graphics but a really good combat focussed party based RPG.
Borderlands is definitely a good suggestion, with a nice bit of replay value. Four distinct classes with an array of build options(though one can respec quite easily and cheaply), a bunch of different types of guns, and if you like shooting and looting, that's pretty much the entire point of the game. It is, in many ways, like Diablo and a pretty good FPS had a sexy, sexy baby.
Dragon Age: Origins will keep you busy for ages if you like Bioware style RPGs, not $30 though.
Red Faction: Guerrilla is only $20 and is a fantastic open world shooty splodey game.
Far Cry 2 is fantastic, some people will say it isn't, but it is, and it's only $20.
Bioshock is one of the best single player FPS games in recent history. You should buy it.
Those people are also without souls.
Rock Band DLC | GW:OttW - arrcd | WLD - Thortar
- STALKER series: Like others have said, it's an FPS but with the open-world bent of games like Oblivion. Call of Pripyat is the latest in the series, and from what I've heard there's no problem starting with that one.
People have already suggest other good stuff from the RTS genre. I'd suggest SupCom 2, but that's really more of an online game. Company of Heroes, and DoW 2: Chaos Rising have good singleplayer campaigns.
I what?
Baldur's Gate 2 + Throne of Bhaal
Planescape Torment
Neverwinter Nights 2 + Mask of the Betrayer
Gothic 2 + Night of the Raven
Risen
maybe not top-priority, but I'm very much enjoying Dungeon Siege 2 at the moment. Great hack&slash Diablo-clone.
Yep. All they really had to do was to make a reputation system and have the factions remember how much they liked you based upon how many missions you had done for them, how many of them you'd killed, etc. The Factions you had a positive reputation with would then allow your character to travel through their checkpoints unhindered, and maybe even could have offered you ammo or medicine. It would have been great.
But no. They just had to fuck it up.
Mount & Blade
STALKER
Batman: Arkham Asylum
Crysis ( I just played it, and it is more than pretty textures. Easily one of the best shooters ever made)
Borderlands (Great fun even without co-op)
Psychonauts (picked it up for 2 dollars and I can safely say that was the best 2 bucks I've ever spent)
Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic (Greatest RPG ever)
Edit: All of those were mentioned with the exception of Psychonauts. I love this forum.
