I definitely remember mounting as many small pulse lasers as possible on the largest available chassis and sadistically crippling my opponents limb by limb
yep, the Nova was the best mech to mount your lasers. I always mounted mediums and a large laser. Group fire - you would overheat a lot, but two hits and an entire limb or weapons system on an enemy mech was generally destroyed.
Dire Wolves were large, cumbersome but could mount some awesome weapons.
I haven't played any of the Mechwarrior games but the gameplay videos remind me of Freespace 2 but on the ground.
Is this a fair comparison?
It's a lot like that! Same kind of military feeling, having control over squad mates, multiple mission objectives. The general gameplay structures of getting missions, outfitting your mech/ship and then going out to fight are pretty similar.
for some reason my mega alpha strike Nova used all medium pulse lasers. In hindsight that doesn't seem to make sense, but in my defense I was 9. Maybe you could get multiple alpha strike pulses out before shutting down, I can't remember.
I loved whichever version it was that counted weight and sizes of weapons. Loading up several dozen machineguns on a light mech and tearing apart heavies at close range was surprisingly effective.
Ah Earthsiege. Pity that EarthSiege and Tribes split so far apart when the original conception was to mix mech sized troops and highly mobile soldiers together on the battlefield.

Yeah, I remember when Dynamix was talking about the Starseige/Tribes crossover possibilities, and god that sounded exciting. Tribe multiplayer mixed with giant walking Hercs tearing up the landscape.
To me Mechwarrior 2 is one of those games that is perfect for its time. The simplistic graphics and environments are a good match with the arcade simulation vibe. It's also one of those games I don't really see new technology adding much to, aside from perhaps environmental interaction which is what they are supposedly going for with the reboot.
I played a bunch of tribes 2 in that period where it was first made free to download
man. we need a modern version of that kind of game
a really good one

The shadowcat was the best mech.
I remember getting a joystick for my birthday that I used for Mechwarrior 3 a ton. It was my first PC game when we got a PC around 2000-ish. Before that I had a mac and could only play games on that :<

The environmental interaction would be pretty awesome. I could see a modern-age mechwarrior game being great for conveying the sense of scale that mechs have. You didn't see any real people in the Mech 2-engine games, cities were mostly just some cubes scattered around without many real details to speak of. If you were playing a new mech game where you could stomp through buildings, see people running through the streets as you went all Godzilla on the populace... that could be big.

I remember I used to play Mechwarrior 3 maps online and just spend the whole time exploring everything. Those maps were damn extensive and had some crazy stuff hidden. I think I downloaded a ton of extra content too. Lots of custom maps.
And with Mechwarrior 4 I would blow up the giant gas tanks and take a screenshot of the mushroom cloud and print it out because it was the coolest thing ever.
I was pretty excited for this, and even bought Crysis for it when it was on sale (like $6 for both games) but I could never get it to work and nobody would help me out so I just let it go
no mechwarrior 4 came out some years ago, they are re-releasing it for free to GET HYPE for Mechwarrior 5 which is supposedly coming out sometime this century
I remember trying Mechwarrior 4, and vomiting all over the horrible controls.
Whoever decided they shouldn't just copy the control setup from Mechwarrior 3 should be punched in the beanbag.

Does anyone else here actually remember the original Mechwarrior game? I mean, I see a lot of love for the sequels, but I also have fond memories of the first, even though it was both batshit insane and so ancient it came on one 3"1/2 disk.
The first Mechwarrior is what got me into computer games.
My uncle had it on his computer and we played it on a black and white monitor.
Always tried to make me use the Locust to outflank the enemy and chip away at them.
I wanted to use the Battlemaster and just blow stuff up. The game was just a bit advanced for a four year old.
I've loved Mechwarrior since I first tasted it in the form of Mechwarrior 2 on a demo computer at an office store I was visiting with my dad.

I would pay good cash monies for a copy of MW2: Mercs that had high-res textures and would actually run on XP.
I still have the disk, and every now and then I load it up and spend four hours trying to make it work. And then I pretty much cry a little and drink until I fall asleep.
But back in the day, I played that game so much. I must have played it from start to finish a dozen times at least. I borrowed the original MW2 from a friend and just couldn't get into it. What's the point of doing missions if you're not getting paid, man?

I wasnt imagining it, the MW2Mercs intro is still pretty awesome.

PPCs worked well because the large reload time gave you time to cool down anyway.

Until I ran out of ammo at least.
Also Synth you are right, the Mercs intro was awesome.
SOTAR: I loved Earthsiege 1/2! I mean they weren't quite up to Mechwarrior standards, but you did get that flying thing and that was pretty awesome.
Heavy Gear was also pretty cool.

Oh, the horrible days of DOS installers and figuring out Sound Blaster and HIMEM settings ujrghgjhg

A bit, although both games played in a fairly similar fashion.
It's the difference between Wing Commander and FreeSpace.
Like you say, both were great though.

Master of Magic was 3 kinds of bullshit when it came to this.
