An Idea About Jailed People

Can mods/deputies be granted the ability to put in a remark on why that person is jailed? Just a brief yiddly-biddly is ok, right next to the name of the person who jailed and the time of jailing.
I think that would do wonders for the system. Props to alpha if it is already on the "Top 50 things I need to code" list.

omg. . .I just lost all of what I typed to a server fart. . .(pressing back took me to a blank text field).
Anyways, I was saying this was a good idea since it helps the jailed person figure out why they were jaield without making a bunch of "omgwtf am I jailed for??" posts/PMs and other people can know if they are trustable or not.
Ex: Jailed person gives advice in H/A forum. Is it for real advice or just trolling? One who doesn't know the answer to the question wouldn't know. But they might get a better idea of the person's credibility if they knew that person was jailed for bad advice or trolling.

Like...a history of all the times they've been jailed/temp-banned and a reason why in another page in their profile?

In the Deputy forum we have a "who I jailed" thread. Doesnt help you guys out much though :P
I have an idea, but it requires a lot of work (as do all my ideas) so for now the answer is no. Once I finish my syndication and permissions rewrite, then I will look at redoing jail.

Exactly.
That. . .doesn't exist already does it?
No...but there is the "Announcing who is Banned" thread...
But that takes a bit to look through and doesn't always have jailings in there, unless they were done by a mod.

I will get something done, but it will require me to add stuff to the database, and that takes effort.

There wouldn't be a way for it to stay clean though...Deputies can't post in locked threads, so it'd have to be unlocked...
And you know what kinda trouble that would bring...

Giving mod lite abilities to the deputy group would allow them to post in their thread. They already have a lot of trust on them with the jail power, so I think that allowing them to post in a locked thread here wouldn't cause much of a rukus.

I honestly don't see a reason for it. I appreaciate your desire to know every little detail that occurs on the board but you are asking a lot of people that are volunteers. Plus, jailing is something that should be fairly temporary, happens much more frequently than banning and is much less permanent.
Now, I think a mod/deputy should pm a regular user if they have jailed them or at the very least explain why they did it in the problematic thread. Anymore than that seems excessive.

My general policy is I post in the thread where I jail someone.
It says in their profile who they were jailed by so if they miss that they can always PM whoever jailed them.

The sentance isn't automatic. You are unjailed when someone decideds to unjail you, so there is no way to tell how long is left short of asking whoever jailed you
Why not just add a description section to the user's profile, like 500 character or 1000 character limit. When a mod/deputy/goat jails someone, they just erase whatever's there and post a link to why, or a super short explanation. When the person comes out of jail they can re-type their shit.

I think a Mod/Deputy only viewable/editable region is better, as it would allow a keeping of historical information.

See, I think that'd be overdoing it again. Everyone knows who the repeat offenders are, and a little inter-mod communication makes that tool kind of obsolete.
If however, it was posted in a user's profile just a quick "Jailed for highsticking - 3 days", with or without the 3 days part tagged on if the mod/deputy/cat isn't sure, then there'd be less confusion in general, for a lot of people. Which is a good think. Like look with EskimoDave: the question as to why he's jailed has been asked like eleventeen hojillion times in public by him and everyone else.

It's all over done honestly. I looked at our jail logs and the only people that have over 5 days are trolls that were jailed and never came back. The mods are really good about releasing people.
If you look in the jailed person's profile you can find out when they were jailed and who did it. I don't think the general populace needs more than that.
EskimoDave was jailed by boddah. He can PM boddah to find out. That's standard operating procedure.

Just as an FYI it looks like he was making a bunch of moron threads that boddah kept locking and he didn't get the hint.
That took me about 5 minutes to figure out, without looking at any mod tools. Much less time than was spent in this thread in general which leaves me thinking I'm right.
If you're really curious you can figure it out.

See, I kind of gathered that from looking at the SE index trying to figure out what could possibly have possessed boddah to pitch his trash over the fence. Conclusion: boddah's a jerk.
Ecoterrorism is actually the single largest terrorist threat at the moment. They don't usually kill people, but they blow up or set on fire very expensive things.

If thinking boddah's a jerk is something I can lose my card over, I'll hand it in right now, along with my gun, my badge, and my parking permit.

I'll change the codes for the photocopier. Again.
It would be moderatly useful to have one place to go to read up on the status of a probationary user that did not rely on PM'ing other mods or posting in the Mod forum.
We have a lot of users. We stick a lot of them in jail. I think a hidden comment field on a user profile would be the best way to assist our distributed administrative system.
