Podcast Storytime

So, I drive for Pizza Hut. I drive...a lot. Music is fun, but gets old. Podcasts are great, but I run out of them super fast (Never Not Funny, This American Life, Radiolab, I Love Movies, How Stuff Works, Smodcast, The Moth, Savage Love, Wait Wait is generally what I listen to).

I recently got into one podcast called 'We're Alive.' Radio drama type of deal, with each episode being part of a chapter. The fact that its about zombies and survival makes it super interesting to me. Story and characters are kind of cliche, but the production value is high and its keeping my interest.

What I want is more podcasts that do the audio/radio drama thing. Tells a story, a different part every episode. Anyone have any suggestions? Since 90% of the time I'm working while listening, of course, I prefer escapism, so sci-fi and fantasy-ish genres would be appreciated.

You must check out How to Succeed in Evil.

It's an audio book, of sorts, written and performed by Patrick McClean (think I spelled that right). It's about a super-villain consultant. No, he's not the villain, he just helps them be more...villainy.

It's very very much worth it.

I'll take audiobooks too. I loved the World War Z audiobook - things along that production quality vein would be sweet.

I'll check out How to Succeed in Evil! Thanks!

Have you ever checked out audible.com? It's an audio book subscription site. I haven't listened(or read) World War Z, so can't comment on the difference in production values, but I think the charge is like fifteen dollars a month.

This American Life tells stories, except about real people.

    Most of them are good.

The Tobolowsky Files are also worth a listen - life lessons and anecdotes from Stephen Tobolowsky.

    Easily found on iTunes!

The CBC's WireTap has been available for download for a while now, which is great. Getting through the past 5 or 6 seasons should eat up some time, though they're only 30 minutes long.

May be an acquired taste (wasn't for me, was for some others I know), but it meets all your criteria. The show is about 60% comedy bits based around fictional versions of real people -- the host and his friends -- and the rest is short stories, often with biblical (the host is a non-practising Jew and has written books of short stories based on bible tales) and the afterlife. The short stories walk a fine line between melancholy and fresh, humorous takes on established tales. Even though the shows are usually all character bits with a short reading or two, sometimes a whole show will be taken up with a single short story.

If you can get into it then I'm sure you'll be engrossed.

I'd like to second How to Succeed in Evil. It's fantastic.

Also, you might take a look at iTunes U. There's lots of good stuff there.

I like Escape Pod, though each story they do is its own contained short story instead of part of an ongoing story. Escape Pod is scifi, but they also do horror (PseudoPod) and fantasy (PodCastle).

Guy who wrote it was someone I worked with briefly in a small ad agency. He was, uh, the copywriter that I kinda took the job from. Anyway...kind of a strange guy and a bit of a tool but his writing and the deliver of how to succeed in evil is just perfect.
