Would be amusing if this ended up with the LDs losing seats overall but still ending up in a better position due to a hung parliament. Would this be considered a good result or a bad one?

The only thing I can think of to explain the Liberal Democrats failing to gain seats is that their numbers were inflated in the 2005 election. That was their best ever, after all.
I wonder if people have basically just forgotton about Iraq. 2005 was right in the thick of the aftermath and the Lib Dems were the only main party to oppose. They don't have that going for them, this time.
Out of all the eligible voters in my household, I was the only one to receive a targeted pamphlet from my Tory MP. The reason he had my name and address was because I had written to him about letting more gay Iranian asylum seekers (yes, really) into the country. Probably the greatest waste of an election leaflet ever and proof that the Conservatives have far too much money to spend on campaigning.
Looking at Conservative targets: 7 failures so far, 2 gains not on list. 5 short of majority overrall, assuming 100% future successes.
So does that mean they can't get a majority now, no matter what?
Only if they fail to gain any non-target seats, and they've already taken 2. However, 5 short would allow the Ulster Unionists to push them over the top.
Despite Nick Griffin's pessimism over his chances in Barking, east London, our analyst Prof John Curtice says evidence is growing to suggest that the BNP are putting in their best ever performance in a British general election. Looking at the nine seats declared so far tonight in which the BNP also stood in 2005, it appears they're up by an average of two points.

Wouldn't that involve some kind of backroom dealing? Shocking.
