I've been checking out Torchlight, the "D2 clone." I know about the lack of multiplayer, which I don't really care about, but I don't know much else. I've read and watched some reviews, but I still wonder what the average, non-reviewing player, thinks about it.
I think the most important part, to me, is that there is replayability. I'm the kind of person that can play D2 forever, since there are so many different builds to be run, and the vast amount of items and runewords, etc. I know Torchlight tries to follow this concept, but how well does it do so?
Thanks in advance!
EDIT: I tried searching, but I didn't find anything.

Yes. It is very, very good. Especially for the price, even if you don't pick it up on special. This is coming from someone who never played D2, if that means anything.
Also I'm pretty sure there is an ongoing thread around here somewhere
It would be really cool if there was some way you could try a limited portion of the game for free before deciding whether or not you like it enough to pay for it.
Like, a sort of demonstration of the game, so to speak.
Yeah, as SmokeStacks is so subtly hinting at, there is a demo on Steam. Check it out.
If you plan on buying though, I'd recommend waiting a bit if you can muster it. It's gone on sale for $5 from its normal price of $20 a twice in the past few months IIRC. One sale was during December, so obvious occasion for that. Second sale was in March for whatever reason so who knows if it'll come for sale soon.
Yes, I found the demo. I never buy things through steam, so I didn't look there, but it was on their website as well. I'm buying the boxed version, heading out in an hour.
The demo got me hooked instantly. It's like a happier, vastly improved version of D2!

One nice thing about the Steam demo was that it pretty much just downloads the entire game, and simply limits you in where you can go. This way you can just buy it and not have to download anything else or move your characters.
I hate the fact that it's singleplayer only, but if it ever has another $5 Steam sale I'll probably jump on it.
Since you're the kind of guy who can play D2 forever, you might want to warn any friends or loved ones not to expect any contact for a few days at least. Torchlight is every bit as addicting and moreso.
The reason I don't buy things through steam is because I can't, I don't have a credit card.
Anyway, I played the 2 hours the demo would allow me to play, and I love it so much. I just wish they weren't planning on making the MMO, it's kind of putting me off buying it...

Why so?
You're not obliged to play the MMO. It'll free-to-play (support by microtransactions) anyway, so even if you do want to try it out you can do so for free.
I'd rather they made a single-player sequel or an expansion as I've never got on board with MMOs really, but Torchlight is a great game, and well worth your investment if you enjoyed Diablo2
I know what you're saying, but I'm autistic, and I have a shit-ton of troubles with things like these. It sounds ridiculous, but it's annoying as all hell.

Every time I hear that Torchlight is better than Diablo 2 (which I never played), I have to wonder about the extent to which Diablo 2 was a bad game.
I mean, people say that Diablo 2 was awesome, and they still play it now, but then they keep saying that games that really aren't that good are better than it. Titan Quest I could buy as being superior, but Torchlight has to be stretching it...right?
Maybe it could have been my Conquerer build in Torchlight, though.
I haven't played Titan Quest, I was never that interested in it.
The reason I found Torchlight better than D2 was the graphical style and the added features. It's also more fluent and snappy, but if it wasn't more fluent then I'd be disappointed - it's what I expected from a modern game, after all.
The added features I'm talking about is for example the little doggy you have, that can sell off all your crap that, at least I, only left on the ground in D2. Now you can actually make a buck from it. And the ability to remove socketed gems/recover socketed gems - I can't recall that being in D2, but if it was in D2 then it wasn't very obvious. Shared storage should also have been in D2 single player. There are other things as well, but you get the point.
Many small improvements add up!

Diablo 2 is a fantastic game, one that is unparalleled in the amount of time I have invested into it. I still play it on my EEE pc, some 10 years after I purchased it.
I wouldn't say necessarily that Torchlight is a better game, it has no multiplayer, for example, and with fewer classes to experiment with.
It has made some important upgrades in game design, that remove some of the annoyances of D2 (god, stamina... what was that about?). It also obviously looks much better and has all the addictive qualities of D2.
EDIT: I also have never played Titan Quest, maybe I should....
I'm not at all interested in multiplayer, so I guess that affects my judgement. I found 3 classic archetypes more fun than having 6 characters, but I'm not sure why. I've only played it for 2 hours, though, but I can't imagine it changing much! (<3)
And yes, stamina was retarded. It never made the game harder or anything, it was just annoying!
EDIT: Correction - multiplayer can be fun in some games, but in these kind of games it's nice to be able to just start it up if you have to kill 10 minutes. You can obviously do that in bnet, but then you're just playing single player with the added spice of lag.

Wise investment. I bought it retail, so it was $20. Well worth it, even if I only played it once fully, then got bored.
Its a polished experience, with, as you said, fluent gameplay and great design. Its the kind of thing that should be supported. The only problem it actually has is that its tiny on a ridiculous level. Its probably smaller than Act 1 of D2, minus the never-ending dungeon, which I felt was nice new game+ material, but goaless = pointless for me.

Or they have these prepaid credit cards you can get at a lot of grocery stores or gas stations. They work pretty much like a regular card except there's a hard limit at whatever denomination you get.
The downside is that if you try to charge over whatever's on the card it'll be declined. If you know the exact balance (you can find out by calling the number on the card) you can have a clerk - at a grocery store, for example - punch in the amount to charge before you slide the card and empty it out.

One thing that makes Torchlight better than Diablo 2 is that you can get started almost right away on killing swathes of enemies quickly and not cripple your mana in three casts in doing so. It's also less intimidating in terms of min-maxing stats - very straight forward with regard to what you want to do, how you want to play.
I like Torchlight better because it's firmly on the "Let's make this fun for the player" school of game design, and not the "let's make this hard/frustrating/a chore to the player" schism.
That's also why I'm loving JC2 more than the GTAIV episodes, even if the latter have great storytelling (which I also love) and the former has no traditional storytelling to speak of.
I don't need to study skill trees or rune words or read excel tables to enjoy TL, I just start it and blast pretty monsters with my posse of skellies and golems.
playing through TQ now, but i just found torchlight a lot slicker. controlls felt smoother, game flowed nicely, and the graphics are fun. TQ has more on character customization (if you stick to vanilla), but the easy modding to torchlight is too much fun. been rolling around with my WOW shaman on torchlight for way too much fun.
nothing like having windfury and frost shock in a diablo game
the only downside to TL is the lack of co-op, other than that i found it more enjoyable than TQ. but then again im a mod heavy guy, and a lot of community mods fixed any issues with the base game in TL.

Torchlight should be compared to Diablo, not Diablo 2.
Um, why? Because of the single-dungeon-that-just-goes-deeper aspect? Your statement is misleading. Diablo the first didn't have much in the way of class unique skills. And Torchlight implements that in a Diablo 2 style system.

Because the creators of Torchlight are also behind those games.
I really wish Steam didn't delete the game from my computer when attempting to update it over dialup.
I wish dialup was not a thing that could exist.
