Sonic Colors

So. New Sonic game announced for the DS and Wii.

Plot as known so far: Eggman is back to the old "kidnap cute critters as power sources" plan: he's got these colorful aliens called Wisps and trapped them in an amusement park in orbit around the planet. Sonic's probably like "Seriously? Again?" and goes off to ruin Eggman's lunch.

Apparently when he frees the alien, he can use their color powers to create new paths. Yellow dude lets him drill underground and Cyan dude turns him into a laser, for example, and chainging together powers in quick succession builds a combo boost meter or something. Apparently the Wii version will have a 2D 3D mix; sounds a bit like Unleashed's daytime stages. And it looks like Tails is gonna have a role, too.

Heh. Wow. That's... wow. Someone didn't think that tagline through.

But it's a gimmick I think I'll like. All this burrowing and lasering and stuff.

I think every new game is going to be a fresh start until they start getting meta with fresh fresh starts until Sonic fans just kill themselves.

Hand it over to another developer already, christ.

I like how two of the aliens are sharing a look of concern

    one looks completely bored

and then the one in the bottom right looks genuinely agitated.

Sonic needs unabashed gimmicks. It's always had them, of course, but the recent games have been claiming to have a sort of purity that they've failed at. Attempting to 'bring Sonic back' will always end in failure.

Well, is Sega really advertising this as another "fresh start"? Seems that's just what the magazine decided to put in.

Now, what really needs to happen is that Sonic obviously needs to start collecting a new set of superpower items. They should be related to the plot or theme of the game, like the World Rings were in Secret Rings. Perhaps... I have it! The new item should be some set of seven precious gems, because gems are shiny and these aliens are kinda shiny. Each one a different color of the rainbow. One green, one blue, one yellow, etc. Seven, of course, because that's how many colors are in the rainbow. Perhaps Sonic can go into some sort of alternate dimension; a special zone of reality, if you will, to collect them. This "Special Zone" should be extremely colorful and just generally be a trippy experience. Once Sonic collects them all, he can go into a shiny super mode... maybe I should write this down...

Huh, that sounds somewhat familiar. Like some game has done this before. Not sure if I can think of which game though, I get the impression it's a fairly obscure release.

What is the plot of Galaxy 2, anyway? I don't have it yet, but the only thing that seems similar between this and Galaxy 1 is the existence of cute aliens. Not, for example, what they do and what the badguy wants to do with them.

Bowser steals the princess for the 47th time.

Though I was referring to not just to the aliens, but the fact that he's on land floating in space, the fact that he has drill and laser power-ups (though in Mario it's a rock dash rather than a laser), etc. etc.

So it's being reported that DIMPS is behind the DS version, making it essentially Rush 3 (a good thing!), while the storybook team is behind the wii version.

So.. the Wii version will at least look nice - Black Knight looked amazing in parts - but the chances of it playing like shit are pretty high.

This. It isn't that Sonic is not on my radar, its that there's an annoying blue blip that refuses to die. Is there another franchise that has existed for so long with such terrible games?

Much to the contrary, I rather enjoy TSR's ridiculously elaborate exposè posts about how the jump height has changed by three pixels and now you cannot see sonic's left shoelaces when he runs through checkpoints so the ideal cosplaying shoe would now be PF Flyers ferrari red custom 934s instead of candy apple red 14 series Chuck Taylors with no grommets and extra-wide "cadmium white" #3 laces.

To be fair, if Sega manages to copy Mario Galaxy well enough, Sonic Colors will be an extremely good game.

If they're going to make a rip-off at least they're ripping off something already proven to be excellent.

It's because SEGA underwent a massive restructuring after Sammy bought them. They're essentially not the same company they were beforehand, except they still own all your favorite franchises and rape them every few years.

I too am failing to see the comparison, besides the planet theme, but so far there has been no footage with blatant planet hopping.

I think the more important question is, why won't Sega take a break from churning out mediocre to awful Sonic titles and make us a new Panzer Dragoon game? Make it for the Wii so it can take advantage of pointer controls or make it for the 360/PS3 so it can have awesome graphics, I don't care, just make it.

If you're gonna go that route, the even more important question is, why does Sega continue to put the Phantasy Star series in the whole and stop that by making a new single player top-drawer RPG experience with a rich story set in the Algo solar system?
