Howdy Folks. This will be my first time to hit PAX Prime and Hit the Seattle Area in general. Hope to meet some of you at least in person during the con. I'm very excited to experience the atmosphere and all the gaming that will be going on. I had a few questions though.
1. Are there any panels you recommend that may come back for this year?
2. Will there be Vendors selling video game related items (similar to SDCC, Dragon*con, Anime Cons, etc.)?
3. For those that know the Seattle Area. Are there any cool stores that specialize in video games, anime, comics that one should definitely take a look at while you're down there? How about great music bars, museums, or other major spots around the city that one should take a look at while down there?
4. How close is the 7-11 to the convention centre? Must have the almighty Slushie since the nearest 7-11 is about 4-5 hours away from where I live.
Thanks again and look forward to seeing all of you at PAX Prime.
It'll be my first PAX and first trip to Seattle. I'm dragging my wife with me, can anyone suggest a good (impressive) bookshop nearby that I can appease her with?

There's definitely a huge amount of second-hand book stores in the area. In my opinion, those are the best to spend hours in. If she wants a Borders, there's a few downtown, but that's just not as fun!

Really looking forward to it. As mentioned earlier, this will be my first PAX ever, and i'm flying in form the UK. Staying about a 10 minute walk from the Convention center, and have already plotted my walkign routes and everything. Getting more and more excited.

Make a short jaunt (3 hrs) to Portland and go to Powells (http://www.powells.com). By far the best used bookstore.
And given how far you are already traveling, if you have the extra day its worth it
I'm planning some Seattle sights to see on Thursday. Does anyone know how about how much time the Science Fiction Museum tends to take? I can only keep it off the cut block if we can get a lot out of it within 40 minutes :?

The main branch of the Seattle Library is impressive as hell. Unfortunately, due to budget cuts it is going to be closed the entire week of PAX. We went in two years ago looking for bus schedules and ended up wandering around in there for about four hours. (I work in building design and it was a double whammy for me.)
There is a Mystery bookstore in Pioneer Square that is kinda neat - but they sell ONLY mystery novels, so if your wife isn't into that sort of thing she may be non-plused. On the other hand, Pioneer Square is also home to the Utilikilt store, and the tres cool Underground Tour.

The experience music project and scifi Museum are both in the same building. I think tickets are $15 for both, you can't buy a ticket for just one or the other. I think if you ONLY do the scifi part 40mins you could see a good portion of it. It is not exactly the largest thing but i think its well worth what time you spend at it.

Thanks for the info. We aren't interested in EMP, or at least not enough to cut other things out to make time for it, so that certainly hurts the $/hour ratio.
I can cram everything in looking at our schedule in more detail, but that means being on the go from hotel check in until late that night, with food fitting in when and where it can. Maybe we'll just take things a little easier and have a nice walk around and lunch at Pike Place Market instead. I hear there will be enough always on the move during PAX.
Besides, need to leave things to do once we catch the PAX fever and come back never year, right? ;-)
This is my first time going to PAX, or anything like it. I am going with a friend who has gone to anime conventions, though.
What I want to know is, since we are both 14, are we going to be restricted from playing certain games, and going to certain places. My Dad is taking us there, and hanging around for a bit, but are we going to be the only ones of our age?
PAX definitely has a slant to the older side, and I doubt you'd be allowed to play the M rated games - but you shouldn't be banned from anything except the pubcrawl.
I was wondering, since I don't plan on going to the concerts, is there any reason to line up early?
As far as your experience once PAX opens up, the only other reasons to line up would be to see the keynote, or if you want to be first in line to play some super-popular game being shown off in the expo hall that you MUST see, and do not want to waste actual con time waiting in a long line for.
Myself, I will be lining up early just because it's four more hours to hang out with people and play games.
This is my first Pax event and mostly will be solo. I was going with a big group of friends to pax east and couldn't because of work and wasted a full pass. -.-
This time there is a friend or two but don't think we are going to be sticking around each other the whole time.
If any of you want to hang out at some point or meet I'm ok with that.
This will be my first time going to back and I'm looking forward to it.
Trying to wrap my head around everything and taking it all in slowly.
Bah. Slow and steady's for other people. I'mna going to dive in (metaphorically) head first.
Agreed., Marysue This is my first PAX, but who knows; it could be my last. Gonna try everything (pre-pax dinner, triwizard pub crawl, buttoneering, PPL) and soak it all up.
This will be my first PAX as well, thanks for all the tips, I cannot get enough. I look forward to checking out some of the panels, some nice swag, and I will be sure to look for a Cookie Brigade person - definitely have some money to spend on you guys!
I am usually a shy person, but if I am around those who share the same interests I will open up in no time. Sort of wish I had a DS now, but I am carrying my PSP around for any waiting of any kind.
I wish I had people to venture through the convention with as this is my first time attending but I think it'll be great to explore on my own and prepare me for next years. Everyone seems really nice and supportive with everyone else and that is what I like to see, makes me feel more at ease. Thanks for the tips, hope to see some of you there is it is possible
There will be many of us, but my group specifically will be easy to spot. Look for the School Girls. It all goes to a great charity and there are yummy cookies for those killer line waits.

if youre planning on staying til late monday night or tuesday, there's also going be a huge arts and music festival going on that same weekend called "Bumbershoot."
It's held at the Seattle Center, which is 1-2 miles from the convention center and will run from saturday - monday. It's not free, but the line-up looks sick with a good mix of indie and mainstream music as well as films and other forms of entertainment.
I'm assuming you're going to PAX Sat and Sun, as are we all, but Monday sounds dope, especially if you're into funk, hip hop and r&b. it's a shame bob dylan's on Sat and Weezer's on Sun, since I'm probably going to be neck deep in games.
hey all. first PAX and first time in Seattle for me. schedule isn't even out yet and I'm already overwhelmed by all the stuff my friends from Seattle are recommending that I do.
I'm going with a large group of people, not all of whom I'm friends with. not really sure how often we will all actually stick together or if we'll break up into smaller groups or just all wander solo.
1) Anyone have an idea how to prioritize for someone who would like to make the most out of PAX, but also get out and eat Seattle? I've been looking for places that are walking distance (< a mile round trip).
2) Also, about swag. How much do people usually pick up per day? I think I would feel stupid going in w/ an empty messenger bag in the morning, even if it has a ds in it (which seems even sillier). How do people usually lug around swag all day long? Do they hand out plastic bags like at some anime/comic cons?

The Seattle Aquarium is only about ten blocks away from PAX, right next to Pike Market. Listen to me, speaking as if I know what I'm talking about. I'm not from Seattle and have, in fact, never been there. I'm just staying at the Green Tortoise, which is right there, so that's how I know.
You should check out Pike Place Market as long as you're here: it's a bit of a walk but still within "walking distance" of the convention center. There's a bunch of food and other stuff, so you can buy food here and eat it on the waterfront, which is kind of cool. There's also not-food stuff, so if you want to get Seattle/Washington/Pacific NW/any other kind of trinkets, this is the place.
For food I want to recommend a Russian place called Piroshky Piroshky but maybe you shouldn't listen to me because I am Russian and therefore biased. You can also check out "the first Starbucks EVAR" if that is something you are interested in. I guess you should look for a seafood place there, because you can't go to Seattle and not have seafood. Even if you're not interested in Starbucks in particular, you probably should check out an independent coffee stand because you also can't go to Seattle and not have coffee (you kind of have to try hard to avoid a coffee store around here anyway).

Is Ivar's Acres of Clams still around? I used to love that place when I was little.
I am completely psyched for my first PAX! And I can't wait to meet up with you guys! My wife is even talking about making this a regular thing if it's as fun as we're expecting.
And on the subject of messenger bags, a lot of the posts I've seen lead me to believe that enough people will be carrying them, so you won't look out of place or silly. Besides... some cheap patches & a few minutes with a sewing machine (or, if you're like me, a quick trip to a place that does sewing), and you can turn an ordinary messenger bag into a neat geek accessory!

I am, of course, operating under the presumption that you say "eat Seattle" figuratively, and you are not actually a giant Godzilla-style monster who intends to devour the city. But, you know, it's the Internet, so I don't want to assume.

Hey, as long as any such monster leaves all the PAX venues (and my hotel) alone they can do pretty much as they will to the city as far as I'm concerned.

Haha I just let my professor know that my boyfriend and I will be missing the first performance of the season (we are in our university's marching band). Normally this would get us in a lot of trouble and would lower our grades for the class by a lot. However it seems my director is excited for us to go to a video game convention, he is not taking anything off our grades and is asking that we bring him some swag. I think I may have just moved him up to the top of the coolest teachers list!

Dude, seriously? You're worried about feeling stupid carrying an empty messenger bag? Let me clue you in-- I carry a large bag as my 'purse'. Said large bag is a DIAPER BAG. I have no children, it was $10 at a thrift store and more importantly for my needs, extremely waterproof. If you think you'll feel stupid carrying an empty messenger bag, you come stand next to me and my empty diaper bag. I'll have TWEWY, or we can play Pictochat. Something.

Well in that case, I might upgrade to something larger. And btw, I've never found anyone to link up TWEWY with in all my time living in NYC. I can't wait for PAX!
Thanks for the advice everyone! Looking forward to meeting peoples.
