Anyone else try and order something from gamestop?
Not the website, but the store.
I went and called the local store about a game that is a larger sku and as such most places to not stock it...
And as usual they gave me the old "the closest one is in california" answer, which makes sense as I am in las vegas.
So i asked them to get it from the store 145 miles away to here in las vegas, a feat that would apparently take 3-5 days.
that was tuesday, and upon inquiring where the item was on a saturday, they inform me that it had not even shipped because "dog, just because we
order something from another store, doesnt mean they actually
send it to us... it could still be there on their shelves bro..."
yeah, he called me dog. I thought maybe I was on american idol and this was that randy guy but he was skinnier although still the right race.
So thats that.
I simply ordered the same item from amazon.com and evidently it will get to me in a few days.
and at least this way i know they you know... actually shipped it.

and they do the transfers. at least out here they do.
they can actually see stock on any item in any location in any store in the united states.
not sure how it works in canada... but id imagine they can check canadian stores.

Amazon actually makes returns very easy, even for gifts.

I know they can see the stock in other stores. Occasionally in store they'll tell me it's in stock at another store and I tell them that it's too far for me as I don't have a car, they've never once offered to have it transferred. This is at three different Gamestops with very, very friendly employees.
Would you like to put down $5 to pre-order Halo Reach 2: The Reachening? Gamestop pre-order exclusive DLC is Master Chef in a gleaming metal thong.
?
Store to store transfers, at least when I left the company, are completely up to district management. In a case like this, it is in fact up to two district managers and whether they are both cool enough to help a customer. Some are awesome that way, some are not so much. The store they were ordering from may be assholes about it, or their DM is. Or they could have shipped it, but UPS didn't pick it up right away.
I mean, I know it's cool to hate Gamestop around here, but who knows. Maybe the item is in transit already.

I don't... I don't think that game is even a thing. That's not a product that will ever be sold by anyone.
"It wouldn't be in the system if it isn't real. Hey, did you know that there's a super secret ending to Modern Warfare where you can ride a buffalo?"
All right, people. It is not a gerbil. It is not a hamster. It is not a guinea pig. It is a death rabbit. Death. Rabbit. Say it with me, now.
By buying from Gamestop, you're pretty much guaranteed to get a copy that's been opened, even if you're buying "new". Those make the best present-opening conversations.
As to the whole store-to-store shipping thing, I've seen a little bit of it going on, but its almost always for customer service issues or on big ticket items. They typically won't send a $10 game to another store because it isn't worth the cost of shipping. A system on the other hand, would be something that might get moved.
I'm just guessing that if your local store ever even bothered to make the shipment request, which in itself is unlikely, the manager on the other end probably just laughed and said "hah, no" and put the matter out of his mind.
Clearly he's streets behind.

In all honesty, the couple of times I've actually been in a Gamestop have been relatively pleasant. Though I'm not taking any chances on that continuing to be the case.

Wait, wat? How hard is it to look at the page you're buying your product from and check to see if it says "Ships from and sold by Amazon.com." or not?

Very slightly harder than not having to do it at all!

Worth it to save the 9% tax as far as I'm concerned.

A company doesn't have what you want in stock locally, but they do have it in a DIFFERENT state.
You want them to ship it from out of state, to somewhere close to you, on the company's dime, so you don't hafta spend any extra money past the retail price (another reason I suspect you dodge Amazon, don't wanna pay shipping).
And you're mad when the guy isn't sure if it's shipped out yet?
Great reason. BOYCOTT
I worked at EB Games for a time, and the only thing anyone ever asked me to 'try to get from another store' were rare toys (when we carried toys, like the Final Fantasy summons), or games that went well-above retail value as used, but still had a low markdown for 'new' (Marvel vs Capcom 2, Disgaea, etc.). Half the time, if you DID order something for someone, when it came in, they would either have given you a fake number and would never show up again, or conveniently change your mind, and now you're stuck with said title, and a company saying 'why isn't that sold yet didnt someone special-order it'.
Basically people trying to abuse the system. I got to help some customers out finding stuff they just couldn't find locally, and you'd figure asking them to 'check online' would make their heads explode, but it was a rarity.
And UncleSporky speaks the truth; Gamestop.com (which actually is a separate entity from the retail stores) has quietly become a really awesome online retailer. Lately they've been matching price incentives and credits from Amazon, Best Buy and such. Case in point, I was able to buy Super Mario Galaxy 2 the week of release for $39.99 with free shipping and a $20 voucher for another online purchase. Depending on your state, though, like maxzero is saying, you might be able to avoid tax if you buy through Amazon.
With this comment, you're leaping headfirst into a pit of seething vipers.
Opinions run the gamut on the practice of gutting games, but there's no lack of heartfelt emotion on either side of the debate.
Or, it's a sufficient release (a la Modern Warfare two) and day one, they're not gutted; they're all sitting out with names on them.
Yo boi y u gots 2 be a busta, $Top Snitchin bitch
Thanks for your opinion but that doesn't answer my question, does it?
From my experience no. Also they send you the preorder bonuses they are selling in store as well
Edit: Thinking it through logically, the only reasons Gamestop guts their product is so they can have a 'display copy', to prevent theft, and on the shadier side of things allow their employees to take games home to play with them
The online retailer has no reason to do that, plus it ships from a warehouse so it'd be if anything more effort to gut them, then place them back in their packaging to ship to you
Are there shelves that they place boxes on for people to see at the online store at Gamestop?
Pretty sure I answered your question.
edit: Beat'd
edit the 2nd: @Rent, where do you live that you get a cool deal? Sales tax in my area is a cast iron bitch
This could persuade me to do business with them through the site.
No you just kinda wanted to jump on the whole gutting-games argument which I'm not looking to have, I just wanted to know of the practice was universal in the company. I don't give a fuck what you think of my opinion or don't give a fuck for your opinion. <_<
The least cool state in the nation, Oklahoma
I sent my wife to get Alpha Protocol and she ended up getting all kinds of weird crap from the on-duty manager. He wouldn't give her the Alpha Protocol pre-order code for some weird reason, and there was a 10% extra on trade-ins when you picked up AP. He didn't know and said the only way she could get that was to buy an edge card, of course. Super weird because the guy was so ill-informed and she had my pre-order announcement text message.
Thankfully, it got sorted out after talking with the district manager. I just hate the sales tactics on that kind of stuff.
Also, they gave me all of these free pre-orders (4 $5 pre-orders). Is there a way I can change that into cash or lump sum credit?
Well, much obliged... wasn't really opinions, though, since it was actual experience... not "here's what I think they do," it was "here is what happened to me." Which would imply not universal. So again, I think answered your question. But thanks for being a goose about it.
I dunno man, Ohio... not a lot going on here either.
Total unrelated thread tangent: I sometimes wish I lived in Florida... not just for the sun, but no state taxes! Same for Vegas.
Also, gutted games are evil. You broke the shrink-wrap? Sorry, that's used.
I gave up on Gamestop once they stopped selling NES/SNES games.
Anyway, I can't wait to see this thread devolve into the flame war that you know is coming...

Wouldn't avoiding tax through any site be a matter of what state you live in? Like if you don't pay tax on Amazon in the state you live in, you'll likely not pay it for Gamestop either?
See when it comes to purchases, not just games, I'm totally impulsive. I hate waiting for things I really want. If a game comes out on day X, I have to have it day X. I know some people get things from, say, Amazon on release day, but I think it's based on your geography and luck. If I have to go into a brick and mortar for something, I'll do it.
But 8 bucks for Saint's Row 2 PC? Why, hello there Amazon...
To be clear, I was being a bit obtuse
See I'm in the military, and in order to be a retailer on a military installation you can't sell stuff with sales tax. So when Gamestop approached with an inquisition for the contract the US Army told them to sell w/ no taxes or they could shove it
Of course they still make Texa$ but it's kinda cool they'd be willing to pay for the taxes on their good in our place
