This is a Simultaneous Turn-Based game, where you got bros on some fancy tron map looking to blast other bros through a system of setting way points and having actions execute along these waypoints.Basically it is the planning stage of days gone by Rainbow six games, and once you have your shit ready to go, you just watch that shit happen in 5 second turns. You tell people where to go; how to get there, where to look how they do it, and how they will act while carrying your orders out.
Not only can you and a buddy roll up and rock out some quick games, but your games will be saved server side so if you don't got mad time for doin' thangs, you can basically play by email as the game will alert you via email whenever your opponent primes their shit.
Heres a data dump if you want to pick through the deets.
GAMEPLAY
Matches take place between two human players, or between one human and one AI opponent. Each player controls a team of virtual soldiers, who are individually armed with one of five weapons:
Machine Gun: Indicated by 3 upright bullets in a row, This is your balanced weapon. Can kill at any and all ranges with some accuracy issues along the way. Also has the highest rate of fire.
Shotgun: Indicated by a Shell that is horizontal, Right here is the most dangerous mother fucker as long as you are within 10 feet of it, any further and this thing is useless. A close range weapon that basically can't miss, with the problem being it can't shoot very far at all.
Sniper Rifle: Indicated by a Crosshair icon, Long distance son of a bitch that is accurate as all get out. Fires a single extremely accurate shot, has trouble with moving targets. Not recommended for close quarters confrontations in the least.
Rocket Launcher: Indicated by a Rocket icon, title says it all and has the included ability to destroy the terrain. Also not recommended for close quarters. Has to impact with a wall (Can hit cover while crouching) to detonate. Has unlimited range unlike the grenade launcher.
Note: The boundaries of a level are not walls, firing rockets at them will cause them to stray into the abyss.
Grenade Launcher: Indicated by a Grenade icon, this is a mid range weapon that allows you to bounce explosive projectiles off the walls, very situational and very deadly. Has the same explosive power of a rocket but lacks the capability of destroying any terrain caught in the blast.
PLAYING THAT SHIT
Each round begins in the Planning Phase. During this phase, players are given five seconds of actions to queue up for each team member still alive. Players can set actions such as creating waypoints for units to travel along, setting an aim direction, indicating that the character should ignore certain enemy units, ducking behind cover, or force-firing some weapons. Players must plan carefully, as enemy units are being programmed in parallel.
Contrary to the game's peculiar description, the game is not asynchronous. Although orders can be entered at leisure, the actual actions take place simultaneously. After all orders are set, players must hit the "Prime" button. After both teams have been "primed", the game enters Outcome mode, where the five second turn is carried out, and players watch to see how it plays out.
Units are not given life bars; a few well placed shots will eliminate any unit. Combat is based on four principles (Colored in rough order of importance):
*Cover - units behind half-height walls are given an advantage; units ducking behind half-height walls cannot be shot by enemies who cannot see them.
*Changing Stance - units in the process of changing from standing to ducking or vice-versa are less likely to win a fire fight.
*Stillness - a moving unit is less likely to win against a stationary one.
*Aiming - units facing the correct direction or actively aiming at hostiles are given an advantage.
The game continues until the five round limit has been reached, or one team completes the given objective.
GAME MODES
Each multiplayer game mode is available in "Light" and "Dark" variants. In "Light" modes, all soldier positions are known to all players at all times. In "Dark" modes, line of sight between an enemy unit and one of the player's units is required to verify enemy positions, adding an effect similar to the fog of war into the game. (Players are shown "ghosts" where enemies were previously known to be, which can be manipulated in the same way as a team member to simulate what the enemy might be doing.)
The multiplayer game modes include:
Extermination: A simple deathmatch mode, one team wins when all members of the opposing team are killed.
Disputed: plays similarly to Extermination, but in the fifth and final round of play, boxes will appear on the play-field. The goal is to collect as many boxes as you can and then escape the map to the outside blue area. Should all team members be killed or escape, the other team is awarded all remaining boxes. The first team to score three boxes wins.
Secure: the game begins with both teams "bidding" as to what area of the map they believe they can successfully defend. The larger bid wins and goes on defense. To win, the attackers must enter and stay in the zone for three seconds, or the defenders must eliminate all of the attackers.
Hostage Rescue: One side plays as the Rescuers, while the other side becomes the Captors. The Rescuers must liberate the hostages from the middle of the map (where they are invulnerable) and escort them to the yellow escape area. Hostages can be given orders beginning in round 2, but their entire escape plan must be given in one go and cannot be edited once submitted. The Rescuers win if the hostages manage to escape; the Captors win if they kill all of the Hostages.
Charge: Shares the bidding mechanic of Secure, but you are bidding across a rectangle shaped map on how far you can get towards the opponents side of the map before dying. Whoever bids the closest to the opposing side goes on the offensive to attempt to secure that zone for 3 seconds.
Single player modes in the current beta include a "Random Match" against the AI (currently only Light Extermination) and "Puzzle Mode", where players must capture boxes for five turns to score points.
For some reason there is also (possibly not implemented yet) a button to directly upload your battles to youtube. Speaking of youtube here is a video showcasing most things you'd need to know if you didn't bother with the spoiler above.
Gonna get Syn-appedIf you want a more detailed run through of how to play the game, what kinds of units are available and all that shit the Mod DB page has a nice tutorial video. Now are you diggity down to play that shit, blood pumping and all that jazz. If you are a super cool bro you can just buy it for em and if you got the swallowest of pockets merely split the price with a trusted associate. That makes this shit cost like [£8.49/€9.49/$12.99]

if anybody is looking for a buddy, shoot me a PM or something to go halfsies with it
edit: will it be available over Steam?
How long does it generally take in between turns?
Is there any sort of time limit to how long you can spend planning your turn?
Especially since you and some other bro are purchasing the game simultaneously you shouldn't mega worry about that shit, might be something implemented down the line, possibly something to bring up on their game forum ya know?!
Using my money on other things currently though.
Refer to second post in this thread.
At the moment, it is not on steam. It works on both PC/Mac but with valve trying to scoop as much dual OS shit onto steam. When this game comes out it is very possible, they have made mention of steam shit gonna be going down when it releases later this year.
same here
If you find that you sometimes like to sit down and enjoy a game where you can just think and not have to give a shit. Think that guns are alright and maybe have played some other tactics based games and want to just wreck on some fools in that multi.
also you're making strategies based on a single potential round of actions rather than worrying about what move your opponent will be making 6 to 7 rounds in the future. bleh, i hate chess.
If I had money or patience I would purchase it myself

Free games are just a crock of shit though, but a few hours of entertainment for free isn't the worst thing ever.
DFO was worth it for your suplexing of mystical creatures alone.
also VENT
game seems more like a puzzle game than anything
The maps could use a little work, sometimes they generated even smaller then what you see in videos with a pretty lame layout of shit where you got a wall some boxes and a small building and half the shits open season.
I wasn't half bad when I bought it a while ago.
Certainly the same 80s/early 90s cyberpunk vibe.
Yeah.
No persistent units, small squad size.
It'd still be worth seeing in action (need to get back to it) but as an LP it has less viewer interest.
Why I fear the ocean.
okay I'm gonna do this it seems like an awesome idea. I wish I hadn't bumped this thread because I'm gonna start my own in a bit
Doesn't fit with the narrative, though. So, that's a thing.
Why I fear the ocean.

I'm totally just gonna skip the story stuff altogether and treat it like an abstract puzzle game. I might make up my own narrative, in fact.
