Can you guys explain handballs calls to me? My buddy is upset over the Fabiano goal because he says that for as long as he has been watching soccer, unintentional handballs have been called. Stuff I'm reading online points to some sort of "deliberate" clause in the rules. And apparently the refs disagree over it as well?

instead of people arguing about whether or not intent determines whether there's a fowl, read the rules yourself

conversely, it was no where near the ball so what was keika doing running into him?

'Unintentional handball' is a merky subject, iirc its usually allowed if

a)players hand is below the waist (i.e. arms aren't raised)
b)it wasn't deliberate, the player couldn't move in time.

But its very awkward to call. However Fabiano's handball (at least, the second one) seemed to me very deliberate.

edit: nvm, just follow Druhim's link. I expect its more correct then me.

he channels the ball into his chest with his upper arm

If the ref had seen it, it would have been a free kick. He didn't see it, and it took 3 replays before we saw it, so it's understandable that he couldn't see it in real time.

There is a difference between someone running into you and you staying in someones way and checking him with your elbow/shoulder.

I can't see anyone watching that replay and thinking 'yep, book Kaka'.
There's no room for that from the replay.

Also which referee saw the incident? the 4th official?

Kaka had been gunning for yellows for a lot of his second half play.

Keita absolutely did dive, but in my opinion, between the dissent and his previous combativeness, Kaka probably deserved sending off at some point.

That hardly looks like he did much more than just brace for the impact.

If you watch this you can see pretty clearly that Kaka intentionally checks him. He doesn't just stay in his way he sees him coming sees that Keita has his head turned and then he lifts his elbow towards Keita and checks him.

    Clear foul.

From the angle, all they would have seen is Keita fall over. The ref literally had nothing to base his decision on but what he saw after the incident.

see, I can get that argument
    it makes sense
but there's no fucking way that wasn't a blatant dive and it was still disgustingly terrible sportsmanship

but that was a pretty ugly match all around

huh. Whats the precedure when none of the referees see it? Is it actually just a judgement call?

edit: I'm not too sure if Kaka did need sending off, but a quick word with the ref to calm him down certainly.

Future Kaka put on the invisibilty cloak, came back to that precise point, and hit Keita in the face with a dowel.
