So my PSP (original) kind of broke a year ago. The nub for the analog stick went missing and I played without it for a while. Then I bought a third party nub and it ended up braking the underlying mechanism. It never quite worked afterwards. I've tried buying a few new mechanisms, but they all had the problem of the stick always moving in a single direction. I think this might be because the PSP's case doesn't close quite as well anymore, so perhaps the mechanism isn't being pushed into place enough. I've tried taping the case tighter together, but I still have to push down really hard on the case for the stick to work correctly. It's really uncomfortable and not worth the effort. So now I'm thinking of buying a PSP Go. I've heard the device itself is actually really nicely designed and feels a lot better than the original PSP. I've also been looking for an MP3 player, and the built in 16GB of memory is really attractive. The only downside being that it doesn't have a UMD drive, but considering I don't have many UMD games, I'm okay with that. Is there any reason I shouldn't go ahead and upgrade to a PSP Go? I'd like to play MGS:Peace Walker, but I need a functioning analog stick!
One of the reasons I was gravitating towards the PSP Go so much was because of the built in 16GB memory and form factor. I've really been wanting a convenient MP3 player, as my cell phone isn't cutting it anymore. I don't need anything fancy for an MP3 player; in fact, the PSP's functionality was completely competent for me. But the original PSP was too bulky and heavy for me to carry while exercising. Since I also want a new PSP, I thought this would kill two birds with one stone. This is actually kind of an important point for me.
Would the PSP Go get in the way of a nice jogging/biking if I kept it in my pocket?
Also: Piano Black or Pearl White?
I'm really conflicted here; I'm still going to keep my old PSP as it technically still works. But if I use the Go for new games from here on out, perhaps things might work out. Sony, why did you have to make this thing such a mixed bag?

Yeah, unless you want all your old software to be useless then I'd go with a 3000
Infinity Mog 21 and over Free Company Sargatanas Server. Recruitment currently closed.
No. Sony's done a horrible job of getting UMD games up on PSN for download, not to mention the machine is stupidly overpriced. A PSP 3000 and a memory stick will give you everything the Go can do and more.
Oh, and when Rainbowdespair shows up and offers a mild defense of the Go, keep in mind he used to be the sole person on this site who got violently excited over the thing.
Holy fuck I love this post.
The Go had an awesome idea of making your library digital but the fumbled on the idea to make it crappy. A cool idea not as practical as it can be is hardly a cool idea at all, let along not reason enough to get the new unit.
Also, can I edit your post cloudeagle? It really needs this:
Hahahahah
XBL Gametag: mailarde
Screen Digest LOL3RZZ
A 3000 alone will cost you $170, a 16GB memory stick can be had on newegg for around $40, and a $20 MP3 player will cost you $20. That comes to roughly $230, or $20 cheaper than a Go.
Rent go. You suck. The PSP is awesome.
The truth hurts, doesn't it?
Even that seems slightly too high for as few games as I'm interested in for it though I'm personally crossing my fingers for a sub-$100 price, but that might be wishful thinking.
I'm sure it sucks for playing games, but since I use it for everything else but that it works great for me. I am not afraid to be in the vast minority that it might appeal to.
Get a PSP3000, as it'll serve the same functions of a go and still be able to play UMDs.

The PSP Go
...do something else because there are no games to play
Even more than price, that was Sony's biggest fuck-up with the Go.
Also, I'll chime in on whether or not it's worth upgrading: No.
The Go has a few advantages over the 1-3000 models, but none of these address the issue of moving the library of titles you already own onto it - which kills the prospect of upgrading for almost any gamer.
If it was going to be your first PSP? Sure, I could endorse a purchase - if the prospect of a battery with a 3-6hr life span doesn't turn you off, and the fact that the new Kingdom Hearts game is only appearing on UMD.
I'm quite fond of my Go, but I can promise you that's because I never had a standard PSP, and never bought a UMD game.
Will it hurt as much as what happens to people with three fucking pages of infractions who shit up threads? Probably not!
I have 19 UMD games, and two of those are imports. Of those games, only 11 are available on the PSN.
I have 26 PSN games (but 9 of those are PS1 games, so we'll call it 17 PSN games), and of those only 1 of them is a PSN exclusive (and it had a retail release in Japan).
The PSN still has a lot of really good deals, so definitely check out the PSN thread every once in a while once you get ahold of a PSP. It's updated each week with PS3/PSP/PS1 releases, as well as the Comic Store.
Which is why I don't get all the hatred so many people have towards the PSP Go. Yeah, it's a niche device that isn't worth it for most people, but it's helped ALL PSP owners quite a bit - the PSP PSN was garbage before the PSP Go came out whereas now it's pretty good - a drastically bigger library of games and frequent sales and price drops whereas before it was just a handful of games with prices that never budged.

It's far too expensive and has less functionality than the 3000.
The only thing I hate about it (and it's a big thing), is that not all the games are on the PSN. I don't think it's as bad as is often claimed, but it's still a problem.
Anyhow, I made a list of all the games that are rated 80%+ on Metacritic (then stripped out the sports titles, imports, and minis for brevity):
Here's the games that ARE on the PSN:

That's a pretty good reason to get a non-Go PSP right there.
Yeah this is the main reason I like my psp-2000 better than my go. (Yes I have both, bought mainly to play PJM deluxe with the wife, the bluetooth ps3 controller thing was very nice in that situation.) Psp go isn't as bad as everyone makes it out to be, but the 3000 is better due to deals/selection on UMDs. (Game suspend is very nice btw, which no other psp can do)
Let me tell you about Demon's Souls....
My question is about the screen quality itself. I've heard both that the Go's screen is better than the 3000 and better than the 2000. But I've never been able to confirm it.
The other thing is, which was brought up, is that the PSP is region free. Which means awesomesauce... unless you have a Go. Then you can only download from US PSN unless you go through the hassle of making a Japanese PSN account and hoping it works.
PSN: ShinyRedKnight Xbox Live: ShinyRedKnight
As for it's region free-ness, that's true. There is only one PSP UMD game that is territory locked (if I remember correctly it's BattleZone), but another pro for the 3000 is the ability to import easily.
I would not buy one at retail price. I paid $75 for it.
For $159 I would buy one. For that price it's an excellent system and it's incredibly easy to fall into a Steam-like trance of buying games. When Peacewalker came out it was a one click install.
Which is exactly the same experience you'll get on the 3000 with a decent sized memory card.
I love the idea of the Go. Sliding body (I would have put the screen underneath or gone with a clamshell, myself), built-in memory, integrated Bluetooth... all great things. I find it more comfortable than the 2000 that I own.
But I just can't forgive the price. It's an awesome system that got Sony'd at the cash register.
