OK, I'm tired of people shitting on The Catcher in the Rye.

Unless you were forced to read it for some reason. In that case, shit away.

Oh man, Steinbeck blows so hard. I love his writing, surprisingly, but his plots are all fucking identical.

You know what book I thought sucked a lot

    Wuthering Heights

At first I thought I hated it because I had to read it for a class but I pretty much enjoyed everything else I had to read for the class

It turns out that the book just plain sucks

Some great books I had to read in school:

1984, Animal Farm, Catcher in the Rye, Candide, The Once and Future King, The Remains of the Day (probably my favorite)

The only reason I'm re-reading it at all is because I barely skimmed it for class. I thought maybe I'd enjoy it, because it's supposedly really fucking good... So far, I'm actually kind of liking it. But, yeah, A Clash of Kings! I'm about halfway through that... I just decided to take a break from the crazy fantasy political intrigue.

Edit: I really liked Animal Farm, but I fear most of it is lost on me. You know... references. Plus, I haven't had a government class yet.

If you're going to listen to it, rather than read it, try the radio production they did. It was kinda fun. But then, I'd already read the books.

You do know that Daniel Craig and Eva Green, fresh from Bond awesomeness, are both going to be in the promising live-action film adaptation, right?

I'm reading a book called 'The Big Over Easy' which is a bit of an odd one about a police force in Reading (Redding, England-pronunciation for those people of foreign climes who do now know the cities of the UK) who solve 'Nursery Crimes' and is in fact about the death of Humpty Dumpty but is surprisingly funny. I can't remember the author as it is upstairs and i aint going up there right now.

I love Pratchett's books, apart from only you can save mankind cos that was lame. Also i will put in a vote for everyone reading the His Dark Materials trilogy, as it is very good, VERY good.

Also everyone, and i MEAN ALL OF YOU should read Douglas Adams' books, both the hitchhikers guide to the galaxy and the lesser known Dirk Gently novels (which deal with surreal themes such as alternate realities and ancient gods)

Also for those interested in biographies, American Scream; the story of Bill Hicks is a good read. Well written and surprisingly moving

Catcher in the Rye was quite good when i first read it (about 4 years ago) but i tried re reading it recently-ish and found the main character too irritating to sympathise with. Mice and men however i read about 5-6 years ago then a year later in my english class and still love it, even though the story was simple.

I feel like I should tell you that the Thursday Next series is something like 7 times better the Jack Spratt stuff.

    It's been scientifically demonstrated.

Naporeon i thank thee, as i am really liking the writing style in this book, but the story leaves something to be desired to far (though not so bad considering i was only in waterstones to buy my gf a birthday present and only bought that book to have change to buy a big issue off the cool guy with big issues outside)

metzger, i liked the theme of mice and men, hell i liked the whole book, im jut a bit drunk and not articulating too well, i meant that some people i know don't like the book as the themes, dialogue and story are fairly simple. I did quite like it however, and was glad i got sent out of the classroom on an errand as we were reading the end of the book because it was making me tear up.

also jimninja i loved WWZ, i got it for xmas, and it furthered my zombie paranoia which is always fun

Don't get me wrong, I love all of Fforde's stuff. He is a very brainy guy, and the Thursday Next series is saturated with literary references, both obvious and oblique. Be prepared.
