Thieve's Highway is also one of my favorite noir movies. Dassin just does an amazing job, it's a shame the ending forced on him by the studio ruins it.
During the publicity for the film's release, Bertolucci said that Maria Schneider developed an "Oedipal fixation with Brando."[2] Schneider herself said that Brando sent her flowers after they first met, and "from then on he was like a daddy."[1] In a contemporaneous interview, Schneider denied this, saying, "Brando tried to be very paternalistic with me, but it really wasn't any father-daughter relationship."[2] Years later, however, Schneider recounted feelings of sexual humiliation:
“ "I should have called my agent or had my lawyer come to the set because you can't force someone to do something that isn't in the script, but at the time, I didn't know that. Marlon said to me: 'Maria, don't worry, it's just a movie,' but during the scene, even though what Marlon was doing wasn't real, I was crying real tears. I felt humiliated and to be honest, I felt a little raped, both by Marlon and by Bertolucci. After the scene, Marlon didn't console me or apologise. Thankfully, there was just one take."[3] ”
Schneider subsequently stated that making the film was her life's only regret,[4] that it "ruined her life," and that she considers Bertolucci a "gangster and a pimp."[5] Much like Schneider, Brando "felt raped and humiliated" by the film[4] and told Bertolucci, "I was completely and utterly violated by you. I will never make another film like that."[2]
She also says that her experience with the film — and her treatment as a sex symbol rather than as a serious actress — motivated her to never do films with nude scenes again.
And yet her picture on her Wikipedia page is actually a nude shot of her from her very next film
i don't know if i have a really firm grasp on what noir is though
In bruges?
le femme nikita?
Well the thing is
Particularly for classic noir
Is that it's half visual style, half plot ideas and tropes or whatever
A lot of that visual style fades out in neo-noir stuff, and I know some people who have distinct problems with classifying anything far out of the forties as noir

Dark City is good, but suffers from studio butchery like so many good flicks that prevent it from being great. It'd be so much better if they didn't feel the need to stop the movie every 5 minutes and have Keifer Sutherland perform exposition to explain away all the mystery of the film.
Dark, mysterious, atmospheric film
Kiefer: Phhhpt. Here's a plot summary for idiots, Deus Ex machina.
Also North by Northwest is wonderful.
Also The Third Man, but it's getting so much fellatio in here that it's hard to tell where it stops and The Third Hard Man starts.

Also, gonna praise the shit out of Brick and Kiss Kiss Bang Bang as well. Gay Perry is probably the greatest character of all time.

Other stuff too, but that shot's fantastic.
Yeah, The Third Man really is a landmark film. The final shot, the scenes during the sewer chase...all complimented by a zither soundtrack.
I hate you.
Much like every one of your posts.
Does this mean you originally had high expectations of my posts?
I had high expectations of Dark City
That's an excellent point.
So in other words, that post didn't disappoint?
I think it's because, mentally, I keep mixing you up with another poster.
So my expectations are for posts that hover around average and then I read the user name more carefully.
I still can't believe he improvised such an iconic line
And really good chocolate.
I want to know what The Strangest Vengeance Ever Planned is
I have so many hearts for Orson Welles.

Steam
especially the fact that when it came out it was rated NC17
Steam
yet it does not surprise me very much
but now I feel kind of strange, because I thought I was appreciating really intense acting, when such was not the case
And yet her picture on her Wikipedia page is actually a nude shot of her from her very next film

The first half in all inside like a play
And then it drifts down to the seedier levels of Tokyo city life

The director's cut removed most of that.
