So I've been a DS fan for awhile, and mostly have played that for my handheld needs. But I recently sold my DSi, and I don't plan on getting another one. I did however just place an order for the Assassin's Creed PSP 3000 pack and I'm looking for some games that I need to try on the PSP. First game on my list is Little Big Planet, since I don't own a PS3, and I've been wanting to play this game for awhile. Besides this, what else do I need to get? I'm into pretty much any type of game, except sports.

Half-Minute Hero is great fun. If you're an old-school RPG fan, the Lunar port is good fun. Of course Lumines and Lumines II. Patapon. Ace Combat X for some good times with planes. God of War is great.
I mean.. there's a lot of good stuff on the PSP. Is there something you're in the mood for at the moment? Chances are there is something good in any genre you're looking for.

In general?
-DJ MAX Fever (and/or Portable/Clazziquai/Black Square if you import)
-Crisis Core: FFVII
-Prinny: Can I Really Be The Hero?
-Half Minute Hero
-Wild Arms XF
-Initial D Portable Stage (Import)
-Final Fantasy Dissidia
I know it's a million years old, but right now I'm playing Siphon Filter Dark Mirror and it's great; I'm getting lost, losing track of time just playing the thing every night. (It's like a Metal Gear.. sort of).
God of War is also great, if you want something more action oriented.
If you want to try unconventional and different styles of games, try Patapon and Loco Roco. I just finished Loco Roco 2 and even tough the visual style and music it's very particular (somewhat kiddie), the fun factor is high.

Oh yeah, God of War PSP is amazing. It's basically like playing a real God of War title, but anywhere. Super smooth framerate, PS2 level graphics, slightly changed controls to account for the lack of a right stick. If you like the God of War / Devil May Cry genre it's definitely worth picking up.

Action games, since that's mostly what I play on it.
Metal Gear Solid Peace Walker
God of War Chains of Olympus
Syphon Filter Dark Mirror
Syphon Filter Logans Shadow
Killzone Liberation (yes, it's really good)
Platformers
Secret Agent Clank (pretty good, worth buying on the cheap)
Ratchet and Clank Size Matters (as above)
Daxter
Also Gran Turismo. Forget the fact that there's only 4 cars per race. They do an admirable job of matching you with similar cars and they do a great job of keeping up (except on rally courses). It's a really good racer, and the quickrace format lends itself perfectly to portable gaming.

Then this is a perfect time to correct that omission! Chains of Olympus is a Platinum title now, and Peace Walker is the best in the series (IMO). Just avoid Portable Ops like the bloody plague.
Also, Monster Hunter Freedom Unite. Don't get the demo, its awful, just hunt the game down on the cheap.
I will second both Ratchet & Clank: Size Matters and Secret Agent Clank. But if you pick one (or both) of them up be sure to go into the options and put strafe on the analog stick. It makes both games about a million times better.
GTA: Chinatown Wars is fun if you liked the top-down GTAs.
Disgaea 1 and 2 are both great is you like SRPGs where you can level dudes up ridiculously high and never played them on the PS2.
Castlevania Chronicles is good if you like hard 2D Castlevania. Also features unlockable SotN.
I just purchased a PSP myself, and these are my first three games:
Persona 3 Portable (JRPG of 2009, now in handheld form)
DJ Max Portable (Music rhythm game)
Kenka Bancho: Badass Rumble (Beat-em-up game with style and humor)
I will second both Ratchet & Clank: Size Matters and Secret Agent Clank. But if you pick one (or both) of them up be sure to go into the options and put strafe on the analog stick. It makes both games about a million times better.
Yeah, I recommended this a while ago too.
Basically, the default controls are moving with the analog and strafing with the dpad. It blows. Put strafing on the analog, and camera movement on the shoulder buttons. That way you move like an old FPS without mouselook - turn with the shoulder buttons instead of a mouse. it'll auto lock enemies anyway. This really should have been the default controls.
Patapon, and if you do the demo, you get a special item in the main game

I'll second P3P, but only if you have no experience with the previous two incarnations. Granted, they added tons of new stuff, but IMO it's not as much fun when you're always comparing things to the original.
And
no offense, but am I the only one here who thought all the PSP Ratchets were abominable abominations of abominable proportions? Because that's what I thought of them.

Yeah, they were... until you changed the controls. Then they were pretty fun.
Gitarooman is the best game ever made, and Gitarooman Lives! is an alright port of that.
Dissidia Final Fantasy is way, way better than it has any right to be, and is actually pretty innovative when they could have just slapped together a crappy fighting game that people would buy anyway.

My only problem with Dissidia is it's a fighting game on a handheld. I don't like fighting games unless the 2 of us are on a couch playing, and can smack the other in the head for doing something lame.
I put more time into Dissidia: Final Fantasy than almost any game last year. I love it to death. It gets ten times better when you have friends who play it. Ad-hoc play has some pretty big framerate problems, but other than that it's worth buying both PSP and game for.
P3P and the forthcoming Valkyria Chronicles 2 are must-haves as well. You may also enjoy Final Fantasy VII: Crisis Core and Final Fantasy Tactics.
Oh patapon's swell. Patapon 2's even better for the multiplayer. Unfortunately I stopped playing when other games came out and I haven't touched my PSP in a while on account of awesome DSi games.
I only have 4, and I'd recommend all of them. Dissidia Final Fantasy, Resistance: Retribution, Monster Hunter Freedom Unite, and Crisis Core.
The best way I can think to describe Dissidia is "action RPG fighter". To me, it feels a lot like an action RPG in the way it controls, but it plays like a fighter. Controls are more on the Smash Bros. side of complexity than the traditional side (SF, MK, etc). I bought a PSP for this game and it was completely worth it.
MHFU is kind of like Pokemon, except you gotta kill 'em all. You can play it local co-op, but I have no idea how it is since no one I know owns it. You choose a weapon and gear before heading out on the hunt, and stuff can be bought and upgraded to aid in the slaying.
Crisis Core is an actionish-RPG set in the world of FFVII. It's basically two games going at the same time. The first is the storyline, the other is the side missions. The side missions are quick, pick up and play affairs that last no more than a couple minutes. You have an objective to complete (vanquish enemies, get an item, etc). There are pick ups during the mission that carry over to the storyline and completing the missions gives some kind of reward. Doing tons of them can overpower you for the storyline, though.
Coming out next month is Phantasy Star Portable 2, which should be really good. It actually has online play and enough content to make it the next PSO.
Wipeout Pure - Just as fun as Wipeout HD
God of War - Chains of Olympus
Guitarooman - Fun rhythm game, with a Parappa sorta visual style
Crisis Core - Fun FF7 based RPG, though the ending drags like a sonofabitch
Dissidia
Disgaea/Final Fantasy Tactics - Tactical RPGs that are a helluva lot of fun if you're into that sort of thing.
Tekken: Dark Ressurection
Soul Calibur: Broken Destiny
Ace Combat X
There are 2d fighters available for the PSP (Street Fighter 3, BlazBlue, GuiltyGear, etc.) but I advise you avoid them unless you just got to get your 2d fighter fix on the go. The PSP's controls aren't that hot for 2d fighters. 3d fighters, on the other hand, run fucking awesome. I'm not a huge Tekken fan, but it is a good version of the series and likewise, Soul Calibur runs like a god damn boss on the PSP. I've logged a ton of hours playing both of em and have no complaints about how they handle.
I agree with the recommendations for Peace Walker, the Syphon Filter series, Ace Combat X, Crisis Core, Tactics, and Monster Hunter Freedom Unite. And I agree w/ Loki, the demo is a terrible introduction to Unite. It's one of those games you either won't like/get into, or you'll be spending the next 200 hours playing.
Portable Ops was a pretty decent game in my opinion, but its nigh unplayable once you try Peace Walker. Oh, and there's a new Ace Combat game that's supposed to be out at the end of the month, if that's something you'd like as well.
Oh! And if you've never played it, Puzzle Quest is a heap of fun. The PSP version has a bug, but totally playable despite.

Man, how did I forget Resistance Retribution. I've finished that a couple of times. It's by the guys who did the Syphon Filter games, but way more shootery.
mostly re-iterating whats already here, my games (all of which are well worth having):
tekken: DR for dip-in/ dip out face kicking. i suspect tekken 6 or soul calibur will do the same job
dissidia
MHFU
loco roco (one of the few games my missus and i can play together)
crisis core
warhammer: squad command
vagrant story (PSN ps1 download)
will be getting valkyria 2 as soon as it comes out.
other than that i'd get hold of a copy of pspvideo9 so you can start watching films on it.
I will second both Ratchet & Clank: Size Matters and Secret Agent Clank. But if you pick one (or both) of them up be sure to go into the options and put strafe on the analog stick. It makes both games about a million times better.

That way you move like an old FPS without mouselook - turn with the shoulder buttons instead of a mouse. it'll auto lock enemies anyway. This really should have been the default controls.
I think you're the one who originally recommended that setup to me, and it made the games playable. I was stuck in both and it hadn't occurred to me to dork with the controls.
Castlevania Chronicles is good if you like hard 2D Castlevania. Also features unlockable SotN.
Just quoting this because I came in here to recommend the same thing, but also to point out that jclast is actually referring to Castlevania: The Dracula X Chronicles. This collection has an awesome remake of The Rondo of Blood, and includes Symphony of the Night (and the original Rondo of Blood) as an unlockable. It's really awesome and one of my favorite PSP titles.
There is another game available on PSN called simply Castlevania Chronicles. It's a PSone Classic, which is actually a port of a Sharp X68000 game which was a remake of the original Castlevania. It's cool, but The Dracula X Chronicles is the better deal.
In addition, I also recommend ...
LocoRoco 2: This game is better than the first, and for like 1/2 the price. Gitaroo-Man Lives: With the console version unplayable for me due to HD lag, the portable version is perfect. Rock Band Unplugged: Portable Amplitude disguised as a Rock Band spin-off. Mother-fuckin' PEACE WALKER: I don't care how many people already mentioned this. I'll mention it again. It's the reason I bought a PSP, and it's the best game on the system. I didn't really like Portable Ops, but PW delivers.
Edit: I kinda forgot the thread was called "Must own PSP games". I removed a couple of games from my list that seemed more like good rentals.
I generally agree with most of the games recommended so far, but I'd put a caveat on the Lunar remake - it's go a completely new localization, and if you ask people why they have such fond memories of the original games, nine times out of 10 it'll be due mostly to the writing and old script. Not that the new script is necessarily bad, I haven't tried it one way or the other, but as a big fan of the original, I can admit that without the writing and characterization Lunar is a blazingly mediocre JRPG.
Otherwise, I'd also say go for Wipeout Pulse over Pure - Pulse is the more recent one, has online multiplayer IIRC and just generally has more of everything. And the FFT port is amazing; there's a fair deal of slowdown, but the new localization and cutscenes are worth the price of admission alone. Some people thought it was a bit too purple, but I consider it the only FF game written above an eighth-grade reading level. And if you like SRPGs, Jeanne D'Arc is a solid, if not spectacular game; it reminds me a lot of Shining Force in its simplicity.
So I've been a DS fan for awhile, and mostly have played that for my handheld needs. But I recently sold my DSi, and I don't plan on getting another one. I'll second Prinny, and am happy to own LocoRoco 2.
I tried Patapon, and I'd suggest trying the demo first. It's ok, but it isn't for everyone.
There's always Puzzle Quest if you enjoy that sort of game.
On PSN you can get Pixel Junk Monsters, which is an addicting turret defense game. I find myself replaying and reseting levels to get perfect completions on them (I'm OCD like that...).
If you are or were a big fan of the Genesis/MegaDrive, or wanted just to play Genesis/MegaDrive games, there's the Sega Genesis/MegaDrive Collection.
If you like older rpgs, there's Tales of Eternia, Valkyrie Profile: Lenneth, Star Ocean: First Depature, Star Ocean: Second Evolution, Breath of Fire 3, Final Fantasy, Shin Megami Tensei: Persona, the Sega Genesis/MegaDrive collection has Phantasy Star 2, 3 and 4, you can download Final Fantasy 7, 8 and 9 from the PSN.
Oh! And if you've never played it, Puzzle Quest is a heap of fun. The PSP version has a bug, but totally playable despite.
Eh, if he's a DS owner, I'd recommend DS version. Touchscreen for moving the pieces is rather swell.
Other stuff...
Monster Hunter Freedom Unite is probably the only game I'd qualify as a MUST OWN thing.
However, there are plenty of other great games in the console. Both Disgaea's are great, as is Persona 3, LocoRoco, Dissidia, Prinny: Can I Really be the Hero?, and Valkyrie Profile.
Games that are really neat but might not be everyone's concept of an AAA titles are Gurumin, Tokobot, Megaman X Maverick Hunter, or Darius Burst.

My Monster Hunter Freedom Unite has a pretty much constant place in my PSP, I have wasted so many hours on that game, it is great. However it is much, much better if you have people to play with, I went through the whole thing on my own and only now am I finding people to play with, and it's way more fun when you can laugh at each other screw ups...
Also Dissidia's pretty fun, but I'm pretty sure it's more complicated than I'm playing it at.
Similarly I have Tekken 5 on the PSP, which has game sharing so if you can find someone else who has a PSP then you can play with them even if they don't have the game, which is pretty cool.
Also Rengoku II: Stairway to Heaven is an obscure little fighting game where you control a robot guy and fight your way up a big tower full of other robot guys. You can equip different weapons to him; chainsaw head, bazooka chest, plasma shuriken arm whatever you want. Also has game share so that's pretty fun. But I'm not very good at this either.
In retrospect I might just be bad at fighting games...
I'm sure it's been mentioned but FF Tactics: War of the Lions is pretty good.

I def. want to pick up FF7 from the PSN store. I've never beaten a FF game, or even played much of them, and I want to start with this one.
