Try being really aggressive! This may not work real well if you're jumping straight into the ladder and learning to play, but putting the pressure on your opponent can allow you to easily/somewhat safely expand.
Mostly follow Stig's advice and play with some people to learn some neat tricks.
ok wtf is up with that campaign mission inside the protoss crystal in which you have to protect the archive
even on normal it only takes them about two minutes to destroy the archive
I know that's a secondary objective but jesus christ
there's just too god damn many of them, no matter how fast I spam units to the front line of defense from my huge, pre-built base
Stalkers and colossus in a big ball around the archive. Ignore the chokes.
Pump enough probes to saturate your minerals and make sure you get upgrades.
You should be upgrading out of at least 2 forges.

doesn't upgrading forges just mean turning them into warp gates? seems like they are less efficient than forges when you're right next to the target
You're thinking of gateways. Forges are a different building where you can upgrade your weapons, armor, and shields for ground units. For that missions it's extremely worth it to max out those upgrades, as they'll benefit all of your units
as for gateways, it's always worth it to upgrade them to warpgates. Warpgates allow you to warp in anywhere as well as reducing the production (cooldown) time of every unit by 10 seconds
My poorly drawn beer fu is to powerful for your advanced targeting systems Theidar. My cryogenically saved brain will be wired into your systems to enhance X-com's chance of survival!
Haha, Day9's little thing about nervous habits people exhibit during pressure situations, that really applies to me. Whenever I am concentrating really hard in high-pressure situations, I lick my chops compulsively. The area around my mouth becomes super-slobbery and it's reportedly pretty funny to watch happen.

Your brain was already consumed by Rankenphile. I would tell you to try again but you are already deceased.
How is it possible that people still do not understand that WARP GATES ARE BETTER THAN GATEWAYS IN EVERY SINGLE WAY AND YOU ALWAYS GET THEM NO MATTER WHAT BUILD YOU ARE GOING BECAUSE THEY COST 50/50, GODDAMMIT.

the only reason I like gateways more than warp gates is because they take less micromanaging than warp gates
how does one go about setting up a queue for warp gates?
I think warp gates actually take less micromanagement than gateways. You can just press W to select all of them and create units everywhere in your base.
this is why you're losing Monroe! You're wasting all your money on queuing!
Queuing is throwing money away for no benefit. It should be avoided until you're pushing the limits of your apm, and then sparingly, as it's still wasted money
As you get better you will be able to do both at the same time. You just gotta force yourself to do the harder stuff right now or you will never improve, even though it may feel like it's making you do worse.
Also, having lots of stuff is always better, and a big ball of stalkers and colossus guarding the archive doesn't require much micro at all.
Pro tip: put some pylons next to the archive, you will never have to take your eye off it when warping in new units.

always build units
don't get supply blocked
unless you are zerg in which case it turns into something along the lines of JOHN FUCKING MADDEN
All of a sudden I'm in platinum for 4v4 random.
This is new and scary and I don't like it.

Quick! There are Zerglings in your backyards, Marauders at the front door, and a Colossus on the phone, what do you do?
I would like to have a phone conversation with a colossus

i keed, i keed. Day 9 does lots of great theory work. His videos can be listened to as podcasts mostly and they retain a lot of value.
Someone in G&T had a nice gif of HD trying and failing to get a word in when casting with husky.

Gateways are what turn into warpgates to summon units.
You're thinking of gateways.

Learn to do the harder things that are better.
You cannon queue warpgates, but W will always select all your warp gates.
Queuing is really bad anyway and you shouldn't do it.
in theory you never queue ever
You don't, and queueing things is bad, you should stop doing it.
THE WARPGATES ARE TRYING TO HELP YOU AND YOU ARE FUCKING IT UP.
it might be faster but I don't have as much time to direct my forces

well I will attempt a different strategy
I need to get better at using the hotkeys
of course this doesn't apply to anyone but the Protoss, right?
Switching between these two things is an important skill and you should be developing it constantly.
Doing big chunks of one or the other is bad.
