    So winter tires?
It's looking like we're going to start getting that awful snow stuff here in the next couple of days, and it's all downhill from here for the next six months.
    Does anyone have any recommendations?

I thought this was a joke. Or a photoshop. It's neither.

I blame the EU though, for forcing such a great brand to make such an abomination.
A rebadged variant of the Toyota iQ, enabling Aston Martin to comply with the European Union's fleet average emissions standards taking effect in 2012.

I saw a Veloster in person today. Its not as bad in person as it is in the pictures. It really does look like someone threw a 5 door on the back of a Gen Coupe though.

Yeah, they have to have keep average emissions for their entire fleet below a maximum. I'm in favour of the EU most of the time, but that's a stupid bit of legislation. Car magazine did a run down of it a couple of issues back, apparently, all it has is improved interior, and a few extra exterior bits. Has the same tiny engine, I believe.

Also, most of the people who ordered one apparently already own the gorgeous One-77, so I guess they're redeemed. :)

I'm all for fleet mileage regulations, but do they happen to have any exceptions for companies with lower unit sales? How is Ferrari and every other sports car brand dealing with this?

So I'm doing some more go-karting tomorrow. The place I go to just got some new karts which are supposedly even faster than their old carts (which were pretty good IMO)

    Oh God.

Not something like that with a Ferrari or Lambo badge on it, please! Seriously, one company, especially a British one doing this is a travesty, but not all the supercar manufacturers. :x

Still the 911 is basically a Beetle anyway, so they won't have to change much. :P

So I might be getting a '83 VW diesel rabbit pickup truck. Only $200 and it runs ok. Hope it works out, I would love to go from 16mpg to the mid 40's on my 50 mile round trip commute daily.

Also remember that with that improved gas mileage you have a 200% increase in your chance of being crushed like a little soda can.

So, what do we all think of the MS3? Looking at this one, GT model with all options except sunroof and navigation.

If going with the MS3 I would certainly hunt around and go with a later generation Speed3. While the first gen is fun to drive, the 2nd gen has far less torque steer issues and feels more solid in the corners like a Mazda should feel.

I just had someone trade in a Smart car. That thing is insanely fun to drive, except for on the interstate. I was curious and decided to see how it felt topped out, and it is so terrifying when you have to maneuver in traffic that can't see you at all. I think I almost got ran over by two semi trucks.

The transmission is also PAINFULLY slow to shift. It is just like pulling teeth. Even when you are "manually" shifting it with the flappy paddles it still is horribly slow and almost to the point that any fun this car had in it to drive is negligible. I wish we had been given a true manual one.

Maybe I'll buy this from the dealership and put a busa motor in it. :3

Compared to what, exactly? Your mid-nineties Crown Vic that doesn't even have side air bags?

Sorry, if Nelson Piquet can deliberately crash a 1300 lb. F1 car into a fucking wall without so much as a nosebleed, I'm not buying the "smaller cars are inherently less safe" thing anymore.

Man, if you can't see the difference between a car designed to be survivable in a 200mph crash and a 1983 VW Rabbit truck...

Speaking of, I saw a Prius pull out in front of a CTS-V and get obliterated yesterday. There comes a point where it doesn't matter how many safety features a car has. Weight is king.

How fast was the CTS going? Getting broadsided kinda takes away the weight advantage a car might have since it comes at the doors.

The posted limit is 45 there, so I'd guess 45-50 mph.

Driving home tonight I saw a Ferrari Testarossa.

    Doing 52 in a 55.

    On 94 in Chicago.

Being driven by a guy probably in his 70s.

    On his cell phone.

    Nearly cried.

How many miles on it? I've got an 01 330, and the things that have gone wrong are basically the things that go wrong. I had an expansion tank crack right around 60k miles and a bad ignition coil a couple of months later. Other than that it's been routine maintenance.

The thing is, routine maintenance is going to be more expensive. Doing it all yourself helps a lot, but some parts are going to cost more.

How many miles on the 530?

can you feel the struggle within?

The tech is still early days on a lot of these cars. There are some amazing things going on in materials science in general that could revolutionize collision and size/weight ratios. The positive about these fuel economy regulations is that it gives an economic incentive to develop the technology, as the companies want to turn these into sellable products instead of fashion and political statements.

The problem with the smart car is that there are no crumple zones and although the cabin does not deform much, most if not all of the collision force is absorbed by the drive which can cause massive internal trauma.

    The other problem is this....

Ugh. Car shopping is making me crazy.

I currently drive a '97 Subaru Outback with 175k mi. I love how roomy it is and I love the AWD. I hate the automatic transmission and the fact that the car is getting near the end of its life.

I tested a 2012 Subaru WRX and a 2012 Honda Fit yesterday. Figured I'd try a fun car and a sensible car. The Subaru was amazing. So much power and the ride quality was good considering the tires and suspension. The Honda was nice, easy to drive, lots of space but it was so slow. I just can't see myself being happy with a car that gutless. I really want the Subaru but I'm looking at $25,000 there and I just don't want to pay that much so I think I'm stuck looking for something comparable to the WRX but used. I want something that is a wagon with a manual transmission and somewhat exciting performance for less than $18,000.

So the plan is to scour the used market for in order of preference:
    1) 2004-2007 Subaru WRX Wagon 5-speed (rare)
    2) 2003-2009 Subaru Legacy 2.5GT Wagon 5-speed (rare)
    3) 2002-2005 Lexus IS300 Wagon 5-speed (apparently impossible to find)
    4) 2005-2009 Subaru Outback XT Wagon 5-speed (not as rare)

Did you drive the manual Fit? I own a manual one and test drove the automatic.

The difference is amazing. The manual zips, while the automatic is very sluggish.

The odds of a manual Fit being on the lot to test drive would be pretty low, I would think.

They are actually fairly popular. There's enough difference in the power that they've developed a bit of cult following.

There's a modding and racing culture around the Fit, and that crowd is manual only. It's led to there being an above average number of them available.
