Today marks the 25th birthday of the release of Super Mario Brothers. I thought we should have a thread. Mario was, and still is, a huge part of my life.
Do you remember the first time you ever played a Mario game? My older brother and sister's birthday are close together so they got a NES for it as a combined gift. After we got home and hooked it up I had wait forever to play and they only let me have one life.
Wii set coming out in Japan
Box includes Super Mario All Stars, Sound track, DVD of Mario's history.
So thank you Nintendo and Miyamoto, you made the a world a better place.
I never really got into any Mario game (aside from Yoshi's Island) until Galaxy, oddly.
Something about it (and its sequal) works for me in a way the series never did previously. I think it's the controls.

Luigi's better anyway.
Seriously though, the Mario games have had a major impact on my childhood, especially (surprise, surprise) the Paper Mario games.
And people make of the fact that Mario has done everything, but I'll be damned if he doesn't do just about everything well, I still have fond memories of the Mario Kart games (fucking Blue Shells aside), Mario Tennis, Luigi's Mansion, Super Mario World, Mario and Luigi, the list goes on.
Mario is a lot like Mickey Mouse - in fact, I'd read recently that he's higher in the public consciousness/recognizability than Mickey. Probably because he actually gets used instead of languishing as a mascot.
Unfortunately also like Mickey, he's not that of a compelling character most of the time, but there's still just something charming about him and his universe that makes me enjoy playing his games.
And actually they do quite a bit with him in the RPGs, he makes a great straight man/everyman for comedy.
Super Mario Bros. was my first game and I continue to buy most mario games available (the base ones and RPGs, not too fond of the sports games). Any mario game still makes an excellent introduction to gaming.

Yea, this generation alone gave me two of my favorite games ever with SMG and SMG2...both masterpieces in their own right.
But yea, I still remember unpacking my first NES as a christmas gift from my parents. It came with SMB and LoZ.
Man the first time I beat world 1-4, I was on top of the world as I thought I beat it...and then I found out I had morel levels to go.

Yeah, same. I played all of the main Mario titles minus Sunshine, and Galaxy was the first one I actually enjoyed (although I enjoyed it a lot).
SMW2: Yoshi's Island was a masterpiece. Yoshi's Island 2 on the DS can die in a fire for the level of difficulty they put in to 100% every island.
Also, I want the Mario RPGs in a compilation. A DVD or two should be able to handle the sizes of the games, considering their size from their respective consoles.
I saw this on TinyCartridge today, and I wasn't expecting much from it, but I really got a huge wave of nostalgia from it (with an NES, though). I think I'm going to go play Retro Game Challenge now.
SO, yeah. Were was super mario land 1 and 2 in that medley? not cool nintendo, not cool. i Hope Europe also get this package, its been to long since ive played all stars.
Was Sunshine any good? I'll be honest. Galaxy was my first 3D Mario. I was...uh...overwhelmed by Mario 64 when it was released. Also, I went PS1 and never looked back until I got a Wii.

I absolutely love Sunshine since I love the locale that the game takes place in. But it's one of those games that seems to have split the fan base quite a bit. Many love it and many hate it.

If you didn't like Mario 64, you wouldn't like Sunshine. It is by far the worst of the 3d Marios.
Sunshine is pretty dang fun. It's only annoying if you go looking for all the hidden coins at the end. The problem is that it ends up being your last goal after you've finished everything else, so you end the game on a sour note. If you just play through the levels and do all the stars, it's a great time all the way through.
It does have some pretty horrendous storytelling and voice acting. In that respect it is Mario's version of Metroid Other M.
EDIT: I like Sunshine way more than Mario 64. 64 felt super unrefined to me. Sunshine hits that level of quality in graphics and physics to where it'll be a long time before it feels dated, unlike 64 which felt really dated the first time I played it.
Bowser, Bowser Jr and Yoshi are a joke, but other than that, I liked Sunshine. Played it nonstop during first year of college.
That reminds me, I'm 25. Jesus Christ. I'm old.

My issues with Sunshine:
-Controls felt really sloppy. I can't really describe it more than that except to say you pretty much needed the Hover Nozzle to correct your jumps and when they took it away, it was *very* noticable. This is not the case with other 3d Marios.
-Horrible camera, especially in the bonus stages where they took away FLUDD (which made them all the more annoying)
-Hover Nozzle was the only "powerup" worth anything, and you always had it. The other two were pointless except for the 2 or 3 times where they are needed to get in a door or something.
-Everything was island themed which wore a bit thin after awhile. It also had fewer levels in general than the other 3d Marios.
-Yoshi was absolutely worthless. Yes, let's put in Yoshi but make him dissolve in water, the thing that is all over the freaking place! Also he gained the amazing power to puke fruit punch.
-Some of the bonus levels were ridiculous. I am looking at you pachinko machine!
-Voice acting sucked (as already mentioned) but that's only a minor complaint.
My memories of Mario 64 are REALLY fuzzy but it felt too sandboxy for me unlike Galaxy which is really...focused? I don't know, Galaxy really feels like a 3D Mario. The levels always had a defined path just like the original Marios. I never felt that way when I played Mario 64.

So shine on, you magnificent plumber, shine on.
(Also, holy fuck, that fan-video is amazing).
I even liked his basketball game on the DS. I'm actually kinda psyched about Mario Sports Mix.
There there, Super Mario 2, I still think you're a part of the club even if the cool video doesn't count you as a Mario game.

Whee, me too. I can't wait to play Mario themed Dodge Ball.
Also, I've already started my daughter on Mario games with SMB and SMG. She loves them, but is still working on getting up the skill to beat them.
