    Sunshine was pretty awesome, all things considered

    It's no Super Mario Galaxy 1 or 2, but really, I don't think any other platformer even comes close to either of those games

    Galaxy brought back the powerups which I think was the main thing missing from the 3d Marios up till then. I mean, Mario 64 had the Wing Cap + two other useless caps, Sunshine had Hover Nozzle + two other useless nozzles, Galaxy finally brought back the Super Mushroom, Fireflower, Starman (turtle shell doesn't count!), and added all the suits which for the most part were pretty great (Boo and Spring Mario were somewhat restrictive in their usefulness but were at least ok)

    If that anniversary collection comes out in the US, I'll buy it.

    Also, looking at that History of Mario video, it's stunning to me how they made the jump from 2D to 3D with Mario 64

    I never really thought about it, but that game is so different from the 2D games it's actually pretty mind blowing how they made it work, let alone as well as they did

    That thing is the standard for all 3D platformers for a reason

    Something about Galaxy 2 just never clicked with me. I don't know what it is, because by all accounts it is an excellent game. Maybe it just felt too similar to Galaxy 1 for me, I dunno.

    I myself am more a fan of the 3D Mario games, especially the Galaxies. I would say both of those are just about perfect platformers.

    But Yoshi's Island is pretty incredible, too.

    I just recently found a copy of Yoshi's Island at a small gaming shop in my town for 12 bucks and it's in fantastic condition.

    Haven't had the time to play it yet though. :(

    Mario is my favorite character of all time, and I wish I had all his main games (no sports or racing, I'd be ruined if I tried that), but the ones I'm missing are SMB1, Lost Levels, NSMBWii and Mario Galaxy 2. Here's hoping I get a job soon so I can buy those and have my collection complete to accompany my complete Zelda collection.

    I was six the first time I beat not-Bowser on world 1-4. Good memories. :D

    The original Super Mario Bros is the first game I ever played. It's only fitting than it's almost as old as me (I'm 26).

    Mario always has been and always will be my favourite serie. It's not just out of sheer sentimentality too since they keep makling great Mario games to this day.

    Someone mentioned trying to find a Cart of SMB2 ("lost Levels"). However, I think that was a Famicom Disk System game. So it's a disk.

    Our Super Mario Bros 2 was actually released in Japan as "Super Mario USA"

    SMB was the first video game I played. It was released the year I was born, but we didn't get our NES until I was 2 years old. I'm told that was the first time I beat a game too. When I was 2 years old. Took me 2 weeks, according to my mom.

    Now I can barely get to world 8. What the hell has happened to me? :(

    Also, where was Youtube when I was 2 years old beating SMB? Had to have been some kind of record.

    Nowadays I just celebrate if I actually stick with a game long enough to actually beat it.

    Some pirates ported Lost Levels to carts. They were bad hack jobs, though, because they didn't have any of the extra levels IIRC. Super Mario USA was released in cartridge form, BTW.

    Some of the Famicom Disk games were later re-released on carts (I'm specifically refering to Japan here btw). I know Legend of Zelda started as a FDS game and was later put on a cart (like in 1987 or something?). I think a few years into the Famicom's life they were just able to fit more data on the carts, so it only made sense to sell some of the more popular titles to those who didn't buy a FDS.

    Honestly couldn't say whether this was the case with SMB2 or not. But I could certainly see them fitting it on a cart - the game isn't *that* big.

    I played some of the 2D Marios when I was a child, but the first Mario game I truly enjoyed was Mario 64. At the time, it was one of the hardest games I'd ever played, but by god it was an awesome ride. Exploring the castle, finding all these hidden rooms and discovering the secrets within them.. Just magical. I wonder if we'll ever get a world hub as amazing as that one in any other game.

    I've been a fervent Mario fan ever since. Every one of his games (except those damn party ones) oozes with quaility.
