So, my mom's finishing up Red Dead Redemption, and I need a new game for her. Perhaps helpful advisey peoples could help with advice? I know there's tons of these threads, but I've not seen one that really fit her tastes.

Platform is XBOX 360.

Mom is 62 & has Fibromyalgia; BUT her favoritest game ever is Mass Effect 2. I think she's done every build on hardcore? So suggestions of XBOX arcade games or Bejewelled or something? Not very helpful. Games she can get immersed in are great; role-playing or story-centric games, rather than something like that flowers game or whatnot.

What she's played:
Sacred 2, hated the interface. This was the first game moving her to XBOX from the PC (due to pain issues & whatnot); it didn't translate well.
Fable II - she hated the puzzles.
Resident Evil 5 - hated the 'corridor'ness of it, never got past the first part.
Dragon Age: Origins - loved it, but not as much as Mass Effect, and has had problems getting back into it for the recent DLCs.
Mass Effect 1 - played the shit out of it (she even loved the Mako).
Mass Effect 2 - favoritest game ever.
Final Fantasy XIII - yeah, don't think JRPG-type games are gonna be for her. She got bored.
Red Dead Redemption - would probably have liked it more if the controls were better; she also found some of the quests a bit repetitive & boring. Had some fun, but I don't think she'll be going back through it the way she has Mass Effect.

What she won't do: first-person; she likes to get immersed in a game, but being immersed & then having something jump at her face isn't pleasant for her. Also won't be playing multiplayer. She played Oblivion & Fallout 3 on the PC, so probably wouldn't enjoy those much on XBOX - of those, she really liked Fallout 3 the first time through, but enjoyed just running around exploring a bunch in Oblivion (fully modded) more as far as long-term stuff went.

So what say you, helpful peoples? Any suggestions are very much appreciated!

Are the Kotor games playable? Because I'd heard about bugginess - if they're not frustratingly bugged, I will definitely look into those!

Dead Space - I'd not say she's definitely anti-horror, but anti-slasher yes. Like, she loves the Alien movies (esp the second, but that just shows good taste, no? :P ), but would never watch the Saw movies. Where does Dead Space fall?

    I believe Fable I is PC-only?

Unfortunately, she has indeed played & beaten the Shadow Broker DLC. She gobbles up ME2 stuff, really. Luckily she has Sons of Anarchy to watch right now, as credits just rolled on RDR.

Dunno why I was so convinced Fable I was pc-only. Ah well, I have my doubts about that - she enjoyed Fable II at the time, but that was before she'd played any of the Mass Effect type games. She doesn't like Terry Pratchett-style fantasy, yknow? Unless it's full-out Douglas Adams, she likes her fantasy to be serious. I think Fable II was a litte 'fluffy' for her. Wikipedia makes it seem like Fable I was similar in tone to II; was it at all darker?

She's had some interest in Alpha Protocol, but I've heard some stuff about the game being very frustrating due to bugs or other balance issues. As with the KOTOR stuff, that'd be a concern.

I really appreciate all the suggestions so far!

Would she like old-school adventure games? Secret of Monkey Island 1 & 2 are both on XBLA, but are definitely an acquired taste.

If she liked the Grand Theft Auto style gameplay of RDR, but isn't interested in GTA itself, you could try The Saboteur; it's a GTA-clone set in Nazi-occupied Paris. A bit rough around the edges, but it has a friendlier storyline than GTA (provided you don't get the DLC that inserts full frontal nudity).

Of the two, KOTOR II was 101204124% more buggy. The game was rushed to release and it shows. KOTOR I was pretty stable (in my experience). I had one issue where my video card disagreed with the open fields a lot, but a driver update fixed it.

Hedgethorn, I'll def look at that game. She liked the *westernness* of RDR; the graphics, the animations, etc. She did *not* like any of the 'racing' type missions, as far as I know. Thus my concern with the GTA-style games that are all about the racing. Not to mention my impression of evil & crime for evilness' & crimeyness' sake - not exactly the same as a renegade punch! in ME2.

Iceman - Thanks! Exactly the sort of info I am looking for. :) Now, KOTOR is XBOX, so I just buy the XBOX version & then have to do some software update from Xbox Live or something? I am stupid when it comes to this stuff; I've mostly gamed on the pc myself. (I mean, I did build our current computer, so I'm not totally techno-stupid, just totally inexperienced with XBOX stuffs.)

I had forgotten about Morrowind! Another good suggestion.

The graphics on KOTOR & MW hold up pretty well?

I've heard that Kotor does't run well on the 360, so I wouldn't recommend that one unless you're playing on the pc (or if there is someone who has actually used it on the 360 that can say otherwise)

edit: couldn't you use the 360 controller with the pc? Or do you just have a wireless 360 controller.

Provided you have a 360 with a hard drive, it's buy game, insert disc, (maybe) download title update, and play. The hard drive is required for backward compatibility with original Xbox games. I've never played KOTOR on the 360, but I've played a handful of old games, and this is the way it works. Sometimes the software emulation isn't very good, but Esh seems to endorse KOTOR in particular.

    Borderlands is first-person; no first-person.

From what I can tell, Earth Defense Force is totally just fighting wave after wave of enemy? My mom would be the one person who would not love that game. :P (No immersion; no break in the action to explore; no story.) But maybe I'm looking at the wrong thing? Even if it's very clever I'd have a very hard time selling her on that.

But we do have hard drive! So I will perhaps try KOTOR for her while researching newer games.

Bully seems to be all puzzles? Or mainly focused around puzzle-type minigames? Yeah, my mom hates puzzles. She puts up with the minigames in the Mass Effect games. She's mainly playing games as an escape cause she feels like crap from being ill, so I also think being in a school? Not so much of an escape!

She really is particular about what works for her - if they could just make a ton more Mass Effect games, one each month, that'd be ideal for me - I'd never have to worry about it again!

Assassin's Creed is also a good idea - I thought those were a bit more corridor-y; if they're more open-world-y, I'll def look at those.

Assassin's Creed is about as open-world as you can get. Whole cities are mapped out and if you can see somewhere in the city- odds are you can get to it.

The missions are rather repetative (but you also don't have to do all of them if you don't want to)- I certainly had a lot of fun running on the rooftops and killing mans but I never had enough fun to beat the game (do to it being rather long and, like i said, repeatative). That said, it is definitely worth a shot.

Dead Rising isn't really wave after wave of zombies so much as the zombies are never gone. Kill a bunch and the run back to where you killed them and the zombies are back again. That said, They're all slow and you can outrun them fairly easily unless there's a huge amount of them, but most of the fun comes from grabbing whatever crazy thing you can to kill zombies in hilarious ways. Some of the story missions are hard and the game might take a bit to get used to (my friends and I could barely last 10 min when we first played it) but once's she comes to grips with the mechanics she should have a blast.

I know it's not the 360, but the holidays are coming up so I'm going to mention it. Have you considered getting her a Wii? The controls would be even easier on her and it sounds like she might like the Endless Ocean games.

As for the 360, Alan Wake doesn't have a lot of puzzles and it is captivating. Deadly Premonition also got a lot of love on the boards for being a video game version of Twin Peaks. I also really liked Nier a lot.

From what I've seen, the Wii would be worse for her. XBOX controller means being still on the couch, with arms in a relaxed position. She does just fine with the Mass Effect games & whatnot; just RDR had some stuff that had a combination of button-trigger-bumper type stuff that was difficult for her (and she complained a lot about the controls being 'mushy'). The Wii is all about moving around, right? Fibro means moving around = bad. Tho, really, Wii has struck me as being a bit light on serious games. Mario or Zelda games would be way too cartoony for her!

And Endless Ocean, whilst sounding interesting to me, sounds a bit Flowers-like for her taste. Also, she's a bit claustrophobic - I don't think diving is her thing.

However, that's another recommendation for Alan Wake! We're gonna look at whatever trailers & whatnot for all these games this afternoon! :D

There are 6? free webisode type things for Alan Wake that you can download for free on the 360. They were released as a prequel type thing. So if she wants some extra atmosphere she can watch those first. They're creepy, not gory, creepy.

I loved Assassin's Creed but 2 is far superior to 1. If you're not worried about skipping games (I for one am really bad about that, I absolutely refuse to play any later game in a series before an earlier one) go straight to Assassin's Creed 2. It's amazing. The missions don't feel repetitive at all, there's a lot of stuff to collect and a huge area to explore, there's always more weapons and upgrades and stuff to do and see. I think it'd be a good fit.

I showed her the Assassin's Creed trailers on the XBOX today; she said it seemed like a Japanese game, like Final Fantasy. o_O I know, I know. But she is very particular!

What's the setup with those? Is it sorta like Mass Effect in being hub-based? Get mission, go do mission, return to a 'base', get another mission? Is it purely killing mans, or is there other going on? And how is the 'platforming'ness of it - my impression is it's very fluid & handled really well, and isn't at all like a Mario game or something where player skill in making absurd jumps is a thing. I hope?

Basically, I think the atmosphere & graphics of the Assassin's Creed games looks awesome, but Imma hafta sell her on 'em.

Alan Wake she was similarly worried it might be a bit too horror-y, and also perhaps a bit too corridor-y, but was pretty interested. I've looked at a bit of info on it & I guess it's split into "episodes" - can you save at any time, or do you have to complete each episode in one go?

The basic gameplay in Assassins Creed (1) once the game gets started is 1) Get assassination order. 2) collect information though pickpocketing, beating mans up, and eavesdropping 3) plan out assassination, 4) commit assassination. 5) return to headquarters when no one is on your tail.

You can also climb anything and everything, find scouting spots that open up more of the city and so on. Platforming is very fluid and fun, but it also takes little skill. It amounts to "Hold run button, joystick forward' and the game will fill in all the gaps for you. This isn't really a bad thing though, because once you are trying to flee from guards and trying to find the best way out of an area, you won't want it to be complicated, you'll want to just get the hell out of there.

Combat is also rather simple, and it amounts to proper timing more than memorizing combos.
