Well done guys! :^: Is anyone building in the snow area yet? Is it actually snowing in there or is it just static snow placement?

    Static

Which made me feel really bad when I put down a crafting station to make a boat quickly and destroyed some snow.

There's still a bare spot of dirt there :(

"/kit snow" gives you 64 Snow Blocks and 64 thin snow pieces. Place those to cover that nasty dirt.

    Or build a Snow Castle

Is that not on the signs, or am I just blind?

If you just type /kit, it lists the different types.

    Yo, Ein's server:

If anyone feels like mining iron for the rails - or just to stock some warehouses in general - I've made it a little easier to find the pit with iron. Warp to lavaland, hang a left, read the sign.

We may want to just stockpile it for now, don't want new people trying to throw carts on the rails and crashing the server.

    Yup, that's what I figured.

Have you considered blocking unofficial network clients by requiring them to "authenticate" to servers by proving they contain chunk generation code? I think your chunk generator is your "secret sauce", so you can do a sort of insecure challenge-response. I'm the server, you're the client. Here is a RNG seed and some block coordinates. Make me a block please. Nope, sorry, that block doesn't match what the "official" client would have created, so you cannot connect.

Would the official client downloaded during the free weekend count as a legitimate client?

I would assume so. Mostly it sounded like Notch was a bit bothered by people creating a multiplayer client only, not attempting to build anything standalone. What I proposed would be a way to make life more difficult for those people. They'd have to do more than just reverse-engineer the network protocol -- they'd have to reverse engineer the chunk generation code, which is doable but not trivial.

Naw, it's cool, I wasn't looking forward to finishing Zeal's bottom part tonight or anything. I certainly didn't decline going to a cafe with my wife and her friends and getting some really good food to throw down a ton of virtual blocks. I'm not sitting here with a cold turkey sandwich and bottle of room temp water.

    Edit: oh it's back up

Awesome. He's literally raking in the dough right now, and not only do we not get a friday update, but mc.net is down every 5 minutes. People are going to start getting angry quick if he doesn't do something. We all know he's closer to becoming a billionaire every day, yet we get no update, and mc.net is a joke. Not too mention, most people don't pay for betas, let alone alphas. I love Minecraft, but notch needs to get on the ball here or something.

The timing is the only thing that's bothering me. I mean, I know he's setting up a company, and I also know that doing so is no easy task, but at the same time, it's like the money starts rolling in, and everything grinds to a halt, production-wise. To be fair to Notch, though, he's put a lot of time and effort into making MC what it is, and I think most of us bought it because we like what it is, not because "well, it sucks now but one day it will be awesome." If the current version was the final version, and was $13.00, I still would have happily forked over the money.

Yeah, I built a longhouse and a watch platform atop an outcropping of rock. Built a set of stone stairs down to the bay and am going to plant a tree farm next to farm raw wood to build a viking dragonship next.

How hard would it be to host a weekly drop of the various badass server maps in Dropbox or something? That way folks could wander around and explore what people have done without taking up slots for active contributors.

Really we should all be happy is taking the time out to do this, it almost certainly means we are going to see larger, more frequent and more stable releases in the future when the company is up and running with some employees and such to handle all the stuff Notch has been wasting potential development time having to sort out because he is all by himself.

It's a pretty simple concept, someone could probably do it better. The properties involved in creating a single block are incredibly simple, there's no excuse for not having more options for cabinets, tables, chairs, barrels, anything really. And the same goes for crafting options.

    You are crazy!
Who in the world would be so sad that he would d....
Oh wait, is that my name in the video?

You fine fellows are crazy, I would have used 2x2 columns of 2 height (unit of measurement being block) with either a central spiral/winding/straight staircase made of half blocks to make floors with floors/ceiling of 1 thickness. That would allowed for quick surveying of just about every block of possible resource, except for where the column meets the floor/ceiling if they align with the 2x2x2 column on the floor above/below it but since resources rarely are single blocks but come in clusters, you wouldn't miss much.

You dug so much more than you had to if you were looking for ore of various kinds ... but you do have a fine looking huge pit in the ground, so there is that as a bonus.

Thou confuse the purpose with the bonus.

Seriously, ever since it really blew up a month or so ago he's been working on things to help the game continue to grow smoothly. Big deal he didn't release an update the last few weeks, the infrastructure is being put into place so that all he does have to worry about is coding and updating the game to be better.

I think the reason we're seeing trouble is what we currently have is a place holder until his business can be set up so he can purchase equipment/services under the business name instead of under his own. He may not have that much money if he's not taking any money out of his profits until the business is set up so he doesn't get killed on taxes.
