    So, you never played Myst?

    Here's the general gist:

At the time it was one of the more beautiful games ever produced. The kicker is that it was the puzzle game to end all puzzle games. It and its sequels can generally be counted amongst the group of the most annoying, but highly satisfying games ever made.

There were few, if any, people that you interacted with. Just the environment, ambient music and the fucking puzzles that you'd spend hours working out.

    Also, happy birthday.

For an example of puzzles, in Riven (I think), early in the game you are walking around and on this table is a set of scales. On these scales are a series of different colored rocks and, if you are paying attention, you notice that you can determine how much each rock weighs in relation to the others.

Later in the game, you come across a puzzle where you need to counterbalance a weight composed of the different colored rocks with a limited set of your own rocks. Fairly easy to do if you were paying attention earlier, but it would take you forever through trial and error.

Not only do you need good problem solving skills, you need to be observant.

When Myst came out, or some time after at least, three books came out, all of which I bought and read. They were The Book of Atrus, The Book of Tianna, and The Book of D'ni (pronounced Dunny.) Atrus was a fantastic book and very mystical and exciting.

Of course these days, you can't make a book about a boy traveling through worlds with his estranged and deranged father who creates and destroys world on a whim with the stroke of a pen. If does become a movie, it's going to be some bullcrap action flick with some loose references to the lore.

To enlighten a bit, I'll try to remember what the stories were about.
In The Book of Atrus, a boy and his grandmother live in a rock crevice in the desert. Atrus's father Gehn comes to take him to teach him the lost art of the D'ni, who had basically died out. Deep in the Earth (which we presume to be our Earth, I believe) there is a civilization of which Gehn and Atrus are descendents. (You meet Gehn in Riven. He plays the bad guy in the super sunglasses goggles.) The D'ni's whole world revolved around the art of writing books, which either created worlds, or simply linked to the infinite number of them. I don't remember if this was ever made clear.

Also, Gehn is a psychopath bred of racism of his half-human, half-D'ni heritage. It's a good story.

The book of Ti'ana is about the boy's grandmother, the first human to meet the D'ni, who were digging to the surface. It's basically just the love story of Ti'ana and Gehn's Father, and the explanation of the people of D'ni.

The third book, The Book of D'ni was boring in my opinion. It's about Atrus and Catherine rebuilding D'ni after the first game's events.

If I had to choose a movie, The Book of Atrus was less epic, but far more endearing. It's the one that leads up directly to the games.

Edit: I see now it's being based on Book of Ti'Ana. That's still good. It's better than D'ni and delves into the world of the D'ni.

    1. The press has, unfortunately, not completely understood the message we were attempting to put out. We had a lot of great articles and we’re really excited for the coverage, but there is a key point that must be addressed. A lot of the articles suggest that there is no narrative to the property. This is not true at all. I tried to be clear in my quote to the press that the novels were providing us with a firm narrative foundation, but that somehow didn’t make it through. The film is an adaptation of Myst: The Book of Ti’ana. The novel has a complete and rich narrative. We have been fighting the assumption from the start that we were just making some kind of hodgepodge video game movie in which we try to hang all of the glitter of the games on some loose, poorly imagined story. OUR PRIMARY FOCUS IS ON THE STORY. The games and their visuals will serve as the support for the narrative, not as the focus of the film.

    2. The reports that we are looking to attach a writer are correct. Yes, it is true that we already have a full script and a scriptment for a restructure (read: rewrite) of that original draft, but we’ve decided to bring on a writer with a fresh perspective to build on the work we’ve done over these past few years. As we hand off the baton to a writer, we will be communicating our initial intentions for the project and story. Integrity of the property and the story are paramount to us.

That should do for now. Thanks to all of the reporters that picked up the story. Thanks to all of the fans for sharing the ride with us. Welcome to all of the new visitors. Goodnight to one and all.

Point #1 makes me happy. The Myst books are absolutely fantastic and anyone who likes quality literature should read them.

Point #2 makes me mad that they won't use the people who wrote the original story.

For those playing along at home, Ti'Ana is Artus's grandmother (Atrus the writer father guy in the games).

edit: With kind respects to rfilyaw for pointing out my error.

i really liked the Myst books. i've always thought "The Art" was the coolest fucking superpower

i remember when i got the first game, it came with some little envelope you opened in case you were seriously stuck. i put off opening it as long as i could (since even if no one else knew, i would know) and by the time i finally cracked and went to cheat, the envelope contained hints about the sparse handful of shit i'd already managed to figure out myself

Heh. I was honestly thinking about Return to Zork when I wrote that as well. I don't know which one was harder, but both were stone cold bitches.

I still maintain that Myst was horrible. I never understood why people love it so much. It was pretty "for its time", but you have to keep in mind that's only because it was one of the first CD-ROM games and it was basically a big collection of panoramic stills you walked around.

God those puzzles though... it's the kind of game you needed to look up solutions for, except this was 1994 and the internet barely existed :P Maybe there were BBS servers dedicated to it, I have no idea...

Edit: Also, that comic is brilliant and captures the ridiculousness of that game perfectly.

maybe puzzle games just aren't your thing?

I solved like 80% of the puzzles in the first 3 Myst games without any hints.

And half of that 20% was ridiculous stuff in Riven.
