I gotta say something, though. While the general concept of the show is fun and I enjoy it, I do find myself irritated at the complete lack of growth of almost every character, particularly Rachel. Every few episodes, she gets another blunt lesson about how goddamned uppity and self-important she is and shows a bit of actual feeling for the last couple minutes of the ep, and then immediately goes back to being a self-centered, condescending bitch with a huge superiority complex in the next episode.
Also, Burt is the best character.
This episode solidified both of your issues:
Regarding Rachel, the musical runs the risk of being cancelled and throughout the entire episode, she keeps referring to it as "my musical" and it is irritating and shit. Also Santana quits for the same reason as Mercedes, specifically because Rachel hogs the spotlight. Rachel's presence keeps chasing people out of Glee club.
Regarding Burt, he finds out about the musical losing funding and raises money for it through his Rotary Club. He then has a good speech about how Glee club saved Kurt's life, the arts should be fostered and encourage kids to be creative, and decides to run for Congressman against Sue. At dinner he has a nice speech about how even though he almost died, this is what is important and that he doesn't care if anyone slams him for having a gay son.
I seriously think Mike O'Malley just reads the scripts and rewrites his parts to make them be awesome.

I haven't seen the newest episode ever, but I feel like this is true only of a handful of the characters.
Santana, Brittany, Mike, and Puck all showed tremendous growth over the last season or so which has more or less followed them into the current season

I'm losing my love of Glee this season. I'm just tired of the same shit over and over again. I'm sick of Sue's antics. She has become a cartoon at this point. She might as well be dropping anvils on the Glee Club and buying Acme products.

She kind of did with that cannon last season

I don't even understand her motivation at this point. I got it the first season when she was concerned about losing funding for her Cheer Squad or whatever, but now...is she just wanting to extract revenge on Schuster? Trying to destroy art programs just to get back at the Glee club? It's dumb and her character is terrible now.

I love Jane Lynch but they really need to get rid of her on this show
She had some nice, touching moments with her sister but she's gone
These are the only things I care about in Glee now:
- Burt vs. Sue in the Congressional race
- New Directions vs. Troubletones
This is what I dislike about Glee now:
- Finn being jealous of any guy who shows potential leadership. He's had his moments but this constant insecurity is annoying
- Rachel's showboating. The Geek is completely right about her character mood swings. I have found nothing redeeming about her this season, especially after she put herself in the race for student president
- Quinn being an angsty idiot. Sabatoging Shelby and gaining Beth is a flimsy excuse for giving her life purpose
- Puck and Shelby. I saw this coming a mile away and it's a horrible idea. I did like his song though

I have mixed feelings about Damian (Rory) because I have watch this boy practically grow up on stage. He was just a young 'un when I first saw him in concert. So a little part of me is like "No! Mine! I was a fan before he was on Glee!!" but I'm really happy that his career is moving forward.
I thought it was a sweet episode. Liked the way they handled the scenes at the end but I was really more excited for Beiste and her possible new relationship
I totally didn't realize until now that Jane Lynch wasn't in the episode at all. I love her but I didn't miss Sue in the slightest

This episode was weak as hell. I love me some showtunes, but that's not what I watch Glee for. I watch it for cool glee club versions of familiar songs. I really loved Puck's acoustic Waiting For A Girl Like You from last week.
I'm thinking the West Side Story stuff should be mostly done by now. They really seemed to have cut down on the singing this season which doesn't make sense because that's the best part of the show.
Also, Finn is a shitty, shitty actor. When they had him trying to show actual emotion this episode it was laughably bad.
Oh wait no it is the complete opposite of that, I hate it because it is so god damn stupid

I completely forgot about this show. I was a diehard fan for season one and two, but I watched episode one and a quarter of episode two this season and I just sopped caring
And apparently that's a good thing from what you guys are saying.

I'd say story-wise it's been better than season 2 (except for Quinn)
but the music has been mostly show tunes which upsets my pop sensibilities

Yeah, seriously. The warblers were awesome because they were always songs I recognized. Season 1 had all the best New Directions songs.
Season 2 had Thriller/Heads Will Roll, the Bieber Episode, and the Gaga episode and that's about it. The rest of the New Directions songs kinda sucked.

The Uptown Girl number in this episode literally made me cringe as soon as the singing started and it was just so overly autotuned
Yeah I'm in the same boat as you, swordfights, I've given up on the show. Maybe listen to a few of the songs on YouTube, but the way they keep rehashing dumb story stuff and making characters so unlikeable has turned me way off. Call me when Kristen chenoweth guest stars again.
As for declining quality of the show, I think the show would benefit from losing some of the characters. There are just too many now and I think the writers are having difficulty writing new fresh storylines for each character.
When you think about it, it's the side characters that are bringing the more intriguing storylines now:
Santana dealing with her homosexuality
Mike Chang and his dad
Burt running for Congress
Brittany being an idiot but in love with Santana
Puck and Shelby
The most boring ones are Finn, Rachel, Mr. Shu, Sue, and (somewhat) Kurt. The kids need to graduate and the teachers need to take a backseat a little bit (especially Sue. I liked this episode because she wasn't even mentioned).

Puck and Shelby is an awful storyline
which sucks because other than that, Puck has been seeing character growth
It's never going to go anywhere but it shows that Puck is growing up and he is mistaking loving his daughter for loving Shelby. For that reason, it's good (so far)

Oh, I don't have a problem with the Puck side of it

And I love Burt. Yay Burt!
I love those two guys.

I'm already 8 days behind because of stupid Hulu and Fox.com stuff. But it doesn't really bother me to have to wait for it.
Darren Criss is the only real pull I have to keep watching at the moment.

that's consistent with his character
I have a problem with Shelby going for it
Totally agree with this, Keith!
I kind of liked this episode, does that make me sappy? Probably!
But the Adele mash-up in particular stood out. Best song in a while.

Like in NY, it wouldn't be a big deal, but in Texas it would be.
That was probably the biggest shocking moment in the episode for me, seeing her reaction to that ad.
edit: No idea why I put that whole thing in spoilers, but I'm too lazy to fix it.
