During the civil war period that Shogun takes place firearms became pretty common due to the adoption of both Oda Nobunaga(thanks to trade with Europeans) and an already existing knowledge of gunpowder.
Formation of the new style army that looked like the armies of Europe or the Americas in the civil war came about in the 1860's.
