I'd rather run my fingers through the furry ball.

Those balls have matured quite nicely.

    mm balls

I would play with the top right one.

Also, render out those shadows to the same degree!

    My balls are pretty popular!

Wakk, you mean the shadows they are casting? Yeah I should clean those up.

On the faceted ball, I like AOBs, but anything I've seen with a circle that is that undistorted within the ball is pretty much a smooth balll.

Aside from cleaning up the shadows, I'd say you've done a ridiculously admirable job of rendering these balls accurately.

I got a few more crits on the balls, so I will go back into them. I started on these flaps, which are still really rough:

I really like the idea of having a sheet dedicated to an analogous hue range. The rendering on the wood is turning out fantastic! I'd suggest you knock the saturation down on that one, though. The others are all highly saturated, and I think it might be a nice contrast. Really excited to see how these turn out! :)

Sorta working around on this one so I don't get bored.

And really guys, thanks for all the kind words. Even if they are mostly to make ball jokes.

Its a little tedious but its actually pretty fun wakk. You should take a crack at it. Some one with your subtle hand at rendering would have a knack for it.
I almost made the flaps sacks, so I could call this Iruka's Textured Balls'n Sacks. I might still do that.

the textures are really convincing, Id suggest making a custom or grabbing one that creates some really hard edge texture.. Or just lasso tool a couple areas of super sharpness would be nice.

You looking to get into doing textures for games? or this is just an exercise?

I will definitely make some sharper edges, ken. To the second question, a bit of both. There is a gaming convention coming up that I am preparing my portfolio for.

Its not reading for me right now. I think going with softer shadow edges and pushing the subsurface scattering would help

    Looking good!

The top right one seems to be very layer-y, which is great for depth but looks a little strange if it's wood.

I disagree - I think iruka said she was going for a petrified-wood look, in which case it's pretty much spot-on - the bark layers solidify and separate over time, leaving this relatively dense 3D structure.

I suppose the wierdness comes from it being a very three-dimensional texture, but on a two-dimensional swatch.

Ikage, thanks for the link, that dude has an impressive set of skills! Had to look up what Schoolism was. Seems like alot of people are trying to create these online portals for art classes. Its interesting, but it feels like paying for peer camaraderie.

Rolo, is certainly exaggerated and it maybe is out of place with the other flaps. At this point I think Im going to go into the scales, do one or two edits on the balls, and be done with it. Thanks you guys for the stream of crits, they have been good help.

This is a pretty great link.

Iruka these look amazing. I think it's funny that you cited me as inspiration for doing these hardcore art-grindings, but are way more dedicated to doing this kind of grunt work than I am. Guess I need to step up my game!

[Edit] Oh hey! He's offering online courses, both personalized and self-taught. If only I could get some kind of loan for that, that sounds pretty worthwhile.

[D-d-d-double edit] Oh dang, Stephen Silver and Bobby Chiu are also on the roster. Why didn't I learn about Schoolism sooner!
