What I am most curious about is whether they use GameBryo, which seems to be going out of business, or their newly acquired toy id Tech 5.
Ah dang it, you beat me to that very question. :P
If it is a flavor of Gamebryo, I could definitely see 2011. But I have to imagine they'll be pushing Rage pretty hard for next fall, so a 2012 ES:V on id Tech 5 seems more likely. That would give them a couple of solid years of development time with the new engine, on top of the development time I'm sure they've already put into the game.
I just hope they can capture the feel of Morrowind, I put hundreds of hours into that game. Oblivion was fun, quite a bit better than any other recent open world fantasy RPG that I can think of.
I wonder how much rage it will produce by not being consistent with previous lore and differing from Arena/Daggerfall/Morrowind/Oblivion.
Don't worry, by sheer virtue of this game not being a complete and mechanic-perfect remake of Morrowind there'll be more than an endless amount of indignant self-entitlement-fueled frothing and screaming about how Bethesda is selling out and dumbing down and stabbing its customers in the back.
God, fuck Morrowind fans, I can't think of a more petty and hypocritical bunch of assholes anywhere else in gaming.
EDIT: You know what? Screw V, I want Bethesda to go and produce a ruleset for an Elder Scrolls tabletop game, as all the fan submissions thus far suck balls to the point where I'm writing my own game.

But how can you be bored of jerky animation, lots of different faces that still somehow look similar and everything being a bit too curved.
I think those are a Bethesda problem, not necessarily an engine problem, and I'd bet 20 hats and a chicken that we'll still see those if Elder Scrolls V does use a new engine. 20 hats and a chicken! That's how confident I am.

Bethesda should just troll those fans by making an updated Morrowind but you don't create your own character, you play as Fargoth.

I don't think people were really pissed that Oblivion wasn't a carbon copy of Morrowind. The major complaints were how cut and pasted the world felt, it seemed devoid of soul, and how everything leveled with you and removed a lot of challenge and risk & reward. I thought those were fair complaints.

The main Oblivion story was meh, but I still enjoyed it for the open world feel. That said, the expansion, Shivering Isles, had a GREAT story. Very thought provoking.
Loved Oblivion, tried several times to get into Morrowind since people gush about it so much, never could. I always get about to the point where I exit the first city, spot a grub or something then swing my sword in it's face, miss 20 times then quit and uninstall the game.

I'd add quests telling you exactly where do go and what to do pretty much all the time. It made the game feel very... gamey to me. I liked getting lost every now and again.

Like that you could no longer create your nice little retarded triple-layer asymmetrical min-max clownsuit? Like that the devs reinstated a travel system that's been around since the very first game and discarding that cumbersome pain-in-the-ass travel network? Like that the devs finally decided "hey, whiffing for no reason is retarded" and gave us a comtact-based combat system (funny how people start screaming "MY RPG MECHANICS!" on this and then hollar about "MY IMMERSION!" about the fucking travel network).
Game had its flaws just like every one does - the dismay over Spears and Crossbows I can get, and Medium Armor in concept even if in-game it was a fucking joke - but it always seems to be the most retarded, inane and petty shit that gets brought up whenever anyone starts reminiscing about Morrowind, so fuck 'em with a rusty razor.

Eurogamer: Is it fair to say then that it's based on existing technology?
Todd Howard: The technology is ours and it is inspired by the technology we have. We have a lot of it. But that's our starting point - the Fallout 3 tech. It started with Morrowind, we went to Oblivion, we did a lot between Oblivion and Fallout 3 because now we had final hardware - with Oblivion we had six months on final hardware, so Fallout 3 technically does a lot more than Oblivion. The new stuff is an even bigger jump from that.
I can say it is on the existing platforms, which we're really happy with. You almost feel like you have a new console when you see the game.

I'm still unsure if I should take a step back and play Morrowind (since Oblivion is my first and only Elder Scrolls game). I have a problem where my opinion of things is skewed if I try the latest iteration before the older ones. So I might have complaints about Morrowind lacking Oblivion mechanics or systems and I'll be frowned upon. Then again, maybe I'm already frowned upon for not playing Morrowind so screw it. I'll add it to my wish-list for Christmas.

The CS:Source beta was loads of fun because of that.
More on topic though, I'm glad to see some more rumblings of TESV's production coming about. Loved Morrowind when it first came out and spent quite some time with Oblivion (never really "finished" it). But as good as Morrowind was when it first came out, I find that I can't really be assed with it anymore. Oblivion has some things missing, like Morrowind's superior atmosphere and less cut/paste world. But Bethesda showed they still have something going for them with Shivering Isles.

How is this news? Who the hell actually believes they haven't been working on a new Elder Scrolls for years now?
They've basically said so more than once. They've even said that it will be out shortly after it's announced. Because you know they've been working on it for a long time now.

Yeah, at this point it would be a surprise if they hadn't been working on TES5 for a while...a "What the hell are you people doing?" kind of surprise. Fallout 3 and all of its DLCs have been in the can for a while, and with New Vegas farmed out to Obsidian Bethesda should have had an open schedule for at least a year or so now I would think.
If they're really going to keep nursing Gamebryo along, it's a minor tragedy.

It's more than Bethesda seems to have said fuck-all in the last year or so about exactly what the deal with V is, so every little bit is like a bombshell in and of itself.

outfittin' your character with the finest in polos and mountain dew apparel
I answered this problem by modding the game's animations. Thank God for the PC platform!
Jump animations are the big offender. I mean holy shit it's bad.
