I just finished watching The Good, the Bad, the Weird. I don't love it, but I like the fact that it's a western that's hyper-stylized and obviously aware of all of the films around it. It has fun with the movie and the plot and it knows just how silly making a Korean western in 2008 is. The tone makes it a lot more watchable than a lot of the other re-hash, homage, self-reflective nonsense that's been coming out lately (Sukiyaki, for one), because those movies took that stuff way too seriously and way too far.
I probably would have liked it less if it wasn't for the big four-way showdown at the village towards the end of the movie. I know a bunch of it was fudged with CGI, though I couldn't tell what and regardless of what I think I saw, there was a lot of good, old-fashioned stunt work involved. It reminded me more of The Road Warrior more than anything else.
My biggest problem with the movie are the outfits and the sets. Everyone looks like they were designed by the same people behind Water World. What was even worse was that everyone, besides The Weird (whose name I won't even try to spell) looked like they stepped out of wardrobe three seconds before the shoot and ten minutes before that, the costumes came from the dry cleaner. I've seen more gunslingers in mint condition in this movie than every other western I've ever seen combined.
I'm glad you noticed that, too! There's a good two or three scenes that are just inexplicably missing. One of them being when the Good decides to help the Weird out (or maybe we're just bad at reading when Koreans are subtle) and the other is what happens to Man-Gil. I mean, I guess the Good saved him, but then he's just never mentioned again.
I want to know more about the Korean with the John Lennon circa 1977 haircut, but they won't let me!
I liked the soundtrack a lot too. I feel like it goes along with what you're saying about the movie as a whole, PI. It gets goofy at points, which is good. But it does have good themes for a western adventure
The thing about rehashing westerns is I'm curious why they exist. The Good, the Bad, the Weird kind of feels about ten to fifteen years out of touch, which I guess is something you get a lot in foreign genre films. By the time we get bored or over-exposed to something, foreign countries (particularly third world countries, like Brazil or India) start pumping these movies out.
Still, it's a pretty fun movie and, like I said, it's a lot more watchable than Tarantino's recent efforts or Sukiyaki Western Django or a lot of other lesser movies is because the director and the cast seem to have a sense of humor about the concept of Koreans making a western in the 21st century.
Nah, Fist of the North (or Blue) Star is pretty terrible.
It's like a rob liefeld anime.

I see fist is from that period of Japan animation that was utterly horrible.
And I am talking about the actual animation.

It's really hard seeing something like FMA and then a clip from fist of the north star.
Because it becomes abundantly apparant how they are cutting corners to save money on the animation.l

I'll reserve full judgement on the movie till I watch the whole thing but considering what Jaa has been through since the movie came out I can probably hope for a train wreck at best.

Let's compare tank fighting technique.
Note: contains major spoilers to Full Metal Alchemist Brotherhood
wife wanted a wii for x-mas so I picked one up on sale last week, and as we basically never make each other wait for our gifts we've already got it hooked up and have a netflix account.
We've started watching Dexter since we've both wanted to see it for awhile. The selection on streaming is limiting but what makes it worse is that a lot of it overlaps with our video on demand selection. We have uVerse and get the movie channels minus HBO and Cinemax.
Plus we've just already seen a lot of the movies as well, even with an 18 mo old which equates to us never going to the movies anymore.
man I wish Hulu made it easier to see which animes have dubbed episodes and which don't
Click on the show.
The list of episodes say DUBBED and SUBBED above them.
Full metal alchemist has one section for DUBBED and one for SUBBED.
Baccano currently only has the SUBBED version up.
yeah I know that but I wanted to be able to see like a list of shows that have dubbed episodes available without having to click on each show individually

It's on the agenda, believe me.

Namely that certain characters weren't given enough development and I still feel like there's a scene missing where the Good agrees to help the Weird
But other than that, it was a really fun, nicely shot adventure movie
I feel like it's gotten harder to make those over the years

Now I'm going to watch the second part of Che.
All in all, I think if I had watched that movie about six years ago, it'd have been on my top five.
Now I gotta watch The Wild Bunch over again.
Edit: Holy crap, look at this stupid gun.
Is Fist of the North Star a thing I might enjoy?
it has Malcolm McDowell, Costas Mandylor, and Vader in a cameo
what do you think
Steam
Yes, very much
because that is pretty much all that happens
Okay I was confused at first but I see you are talking about the live-action American adaptation
I am talking about the anime
Also only you would list goddamn Costas Mandylor as a selling point
I think this clip sums the show up pretty well.
Not sure if you're talking about the movie or the series, though.

fist of the north star is one of the few animes that is worth your time
I guess I'll give it a shot anyway
There's nothing really bad about it, but I can't say that I walked away feeling or knowing anything that I didn't beforehand.
I can't recommend unless someone out there has some weird boner for commies with beards, which, knowing this place, is someone I'm sure.
Anyways, The X-Files episode "Home" is on. You can imagine how excited I am.

Oh yeah it's terrible
But that's kind of it's charm, now, in a weird way
I saw the X-Files episode "Hungry" recently
The one with the fast food employee
Certain episodes of that show were incredible

This is relevant because all of the original FMA series is on instant queue now.
That scene was pretty cool.

Pfffffahahahahaha
I was drinking a glass of water at the end and now oh God it's everywhere
This. Ip Man is hella awesome.
