Rock Band 3
October 26, 2010
Xbox 360, PS3, Nintendo Wii, and a DS version
Rb3_box_art.jpg

WHAT'S THIS?
Rock Band 3 will include several new features to the current selection of gameplay modes:
  • Vocal Harmonies - Continuing from Beatles Rock Band and into Green Day Rock Band, these are now a staple allowing up to three people to sing three distinct parts.
  • Keyboards - An actual midi keyboard is sold that can be worn like a keytar and has two full octaves.
  • Hook Up Your E-Kit/Keyboard - Got an electronic keyboard or an electronic drumkit? A MIDI converter box is now available to allow the use of your own real gear!
  • Revamped World Tour Mode - Take small tours of 3+ venues playing one of three setlists. They range from a few songs in specific genres, decades, or even the song sources (i.e. play 3 Lego Rock Band songs).
  • Drop In and Out - Players can jump in or out of songs being played. They can also change instruments or difficulty settings during a song via the Pause menu. Resuming from a Pause state rewinds the song a bit.
  • Song Filtering - There are tons of ways to sort your music library now. Also there is a voting system (a la RBN tracks) with the 1-5 lighters to keep those annoying songs away from your random setlists.
  • Pro Mode - Learn to play songs with actual instruments! Pro mode will have it's own difficulty tiers (Easy to Expert) and two versions of guitars will be sold: the Mustang (MIDI guitar with 100+ fret buttons and works as a normal RB guitar) and the Squier (actual Fender guitar with special sensors for Pro Mode only). Drums incorporates the cymbal peripherals to allow for Pro Mode. There is bass pro mode but you use either of the two guitars they sell for it.
  • Legacy Content - Certain popular DLC songs are getting updates to allow for Pro Guitar/Bass charts. Check out the Rock Band forums to find out which ones and vote for future updates!
  • Revamped Scoring - The game still grabs your individual instrument score even when playing in a band.
  • Exporting - You will be able to export Rock Band 2 into 3 via a code/download just like Lego Rock Band did. This goes for all three consoles, even the Wii!

rockband30610x-large.jpg

rock-band-3-squier-controller.jpg
Rock Band 3 Squier Stratocaster (~$250)
  • Has a MIDI out so it can be used with other programs.
  • It is an actual guitar with fast sensing technology that reads the frets before you strum.

rock-band-3-mustang-controller.jpg
Fender Mustang PRO-Guitar Controller (~$150)
  • Has a MIDI out so it can be used with other programs
  • It has 102 buttons for the frets
  • It is smaller than the Squire but is essentially the hassle-free option for Pro Mode (i.e. tuning, strings, etc.)
  • Can be used in Pro Mode or normal 5-lane modes.

Drums
  • Rock Band 2 kit's "mystery port" will be opened up for a 2nd pedal (or hi-hat that will only function for fills or free play).
  • Pro mode charts cymbal/hat/crash hits where appropriate using the oval-like cymbal shape for the gems.
  • Double bass & hi-hat pedal will NOT be charted. Some RBN tracks do come with double bass charts.
  • Unfortunately, GH drumkit won't be supported in Pro Mode.

MIDI Pro Adapter
midi-pro-adapter.jpg

Rock Band Network
Available now on LIVE
Xbox 360 - All features
PS3 & Wii - Limited DLC from RBN after it goes on LIVE, PS3 might get the full RBN later on

Rock-band-network-logo.jpg
WHAT'S THIS?
WikiPedia wrote:
The Rock Band Network is a system designed by Harmonix Music Systems with the help of Microsoft to allow musical artists and record labels to make their music available as playable tracks for the Rock Band series of rhythm video games. The Network was designed to allow more music to be incorporated into Rock Band than Harmonix themselves could produce, and it is seen as a way to further expand the games' music catalog into a wide variety of genres. The Network is set to start beta testing in September 2009, with it becoming publicly available to all Xbox 360 players in November; Harmonix hopes to be able to also bring these songs to the PlayStation 3 and Wii consoles.

The Rock Band Network is based on the XNA Creators Club model and uses peer review to check songs for playability, copyright violations, and profanity. Harmonix has developed a suite of software tools, including a modified version of REAPER, a digital audio sound tool, and Magma, a metadata packaging tool, for use by artists and labels. In addition, Harmonix has helped to spawn the creation of several third-party companies, based on the previous hacking environment for the creation of custom songs, that will author an artist's song into a Rock Band track. Artists retain full control on their songs, and receive 30% of the sales from the Network. Several artists and labels have already committed to expanding the distribution of their music through the network.

WHAT BANDS ARE DOING THIS?
This obviously gives smaller, indie bands a venue for some cash. There is a list up on the Rock Band forums of bands and labels who may be putting songs up on the Rock Band Network. Expect to see more from Harmonix bands, Johnathan Coulton, and plenty of Indie bands.

I HAVE A BAND!
Great! Have a look at the process and tool you will need over on the RBN page.

HOW DO I USE THIS NOW THAT IT IS LIVE?
As long as you have an Xbox 360, Rock Band 2 or 3, and LIVE, the Rock Band Network Store should be under the Music Store after you press start on the opening screen. From there you can preview all the songs, download demos, and buy songs. The demo is basically 30 seconds from the beginning of the song where you can play for free. If you pause the song in there, you can purchase it. Songs purchased from the RBN will show up as their own category in song selection with a tiny RBN logo. RBN tracks can't be played in Tour Challenge mode or via mystery setlists.

I HAVE A PS3/WII AND I CAN'T GET THIS!?
Due to certain restrictions, Harmonix has only been able to sell select popular RBN tracks on the PSN. Wii gets boned for now. All this might change in the future.

LIST OF RBN SONGS

Here's the WikiPedia list.

========================

The Beatles Rock Band
09/09/09
Xbox 360, PS3, and the Wii
The_Beatles_Rock_Band_box_art.jpg
WHAT'S IN IT?
  • Compatibility - Due to restrictions by Apple, on-disc and DLC tracks for the Beatles Rock Band will not be compatible with any other Rock Band game.
  • Harmonies - Two additional people can sing back up vocals. All microphones are tied to one controller allowing for any combination of singers, potentially up to 6 people (3 singers, 3 instruments) can play because of this.
  • Overdrive/Beatlemania! - Due to restrictions by Apple, it seems the freestyle drum fill to activate Overdrive/Beatlemania! on drums no longer exists. Instead, you're given a glowing green gem to hit to activate it minus the drum fill.
  • Effects - Guitar switch effects are disabled in-game. Whammy doesn't always produce a modified noise. Most of this has to do with the lack of split tracks. Opening/Closing drum fills are silenced as well.
  • Unlockable media - Never before seen videos, photos, and other neat goodies relating to the Fab Four.
  • Dreamscapes - While the game follows the Beatles' career at the start, they end up being cooped up in Abbey Road Studios in the later half. In order to present better visuals than just strumming in the studio, Harmonix has gone ahead and created these dreamscapes - imagined cinematics of the song that plays out while you play.
  • Downloadable Albums - Abbey Road has been announced to be the first full album with more full albums to come after the game's release. See below for release dates and albums.
  • New Instruments - Based on the Beatles' own gear:
    • John Lennon’s Rickenbacker 325 guitar
    • Sir Paul McCartney’s trademark Höfner bass
    • George Harrison’s Gretsch Duo Jet guitar
    • Ringo Starr’s drums with classic black oyster pearl finish and Ludwig-branded Beatles kick drum head

Basically a game covering lots of Green Day and nothing else. A bit similar to Beatles Rock Band but the amount of polish is yet to be seen. • Fully Exportable - It has been confirmed that this game will be fully exportable to allow its tracks to be played on Rock Band, Rock Band 2, and some tracks for Lego Rock Band, of course with a small fee. Pre-ordering at Gamestop will waive this fee via a code.

Also, their difficulty isn't set properly. My friend who's used to Expert was telling me how it was a bit too easy.

The difficulty setting isn't the problem - when karaoke mode is on, vocals get automatic pitch correction, which is the problem. It becomes almost impossible to tell how well you're actually singing because only the absolute worst notes aren't corrected to perfection or close to it.

When All Instruments mode is on, vocalists might as well just be standing off to the side singing whatever they feel like for all the relevance it will have to what the rest of the band is doing.

HMX has always had a bit of a blind spot when doing anything new. RB1 introduced not only the full-band, but also a tour mode. However, don't bother with the tour unless you really think singing and playing an instrument is what you really wanted to do. And definitely don't bother with having a cohesive band...

RB2 allowed people to play World Tour individually and have a cohesive band. But forget about those stars.

RB3 adds keys and Pro and reinstates a commitment to stars. But now the tour is gone, the band is less cohesive, and if you even cared about a high score, you'd better have an internet connection.

Singing wasn't necessarily ignored, but it wasn't really dealt with either. They added some harmonies, but that's about it. Their design choice was to concentrate on the instruments, especially the new one, and even then, they couldn't add all five on stage. Vocals kind of got lost in the shuffle.

Well, no, there's added keyboards now. And considering some of the keyboard stuff was previously charted to guitar, there'd be some significant changes in the charting.

Now to check if the new-old pack is all of the old-old pack and I can just delete the old one, instead of a Bon Jovi sit where I have Wanted and Wanted (RB3) both there.

If you have the 360 version, Wanted was on the RB1 export, which has each song individually on your hard drive (as opposed to the RB2 download), if I recall correctly. So you could find and delete it.

Queen upgrade pack does NOT replace all of the old pack's songs. Off the top of my head, Crazy Thing Called Love and Tie Your Mother Down.

Crazy Thing Called Love could have harmonies, but we've not actually seen Harmonix just upgrade a song for harmonies yet via marketplace download. My theory is that if a song's only upgrade could be harmonies, they might be waiting and just release a bunch of harmony updates via a patch down the road.

    So, in other news..

I finally got Rock Band 3. No keys yet, although I did get Lips+2 mics at the same time so harmonies could occur (and wouldn't you know it, my old reliable wired mic started shitting out the same day).

Barring the usual complaints people have about the game, this is exactly what I wanted from a RB2 sequel. And let me tell you, RB3 having harmonies just revived Rock Band being played when everyone is over at my mom's house for holidays and birthdays. My mom refuses to play guitar and only sings, my dad only will sing, and my stepdad will sing (sometimes) but can at least play medium guitar.

Over the past few months people started barely paying attention when Rock Band would be booted up. It was pretty much me and my youngest brother, or my brother and his friend coming over and playing a couple of songs.

Last night, we were harmonizing in both RB3 and Beatles for five hours straight.

I can't wait until I can get the keyboard.

edit: people also had fun even co-op singing 1part vocal songs, since the other mics contribute to filling the pie. So even if someone missed a part, someone else's singing would cover for them. And I think this is part of why people started playing again, because in a harmony situation you aren't the focus of the room anymore.

We won't know until they catch up in two weeks. Either the Wii will slow down (remember, they started with ten songs per week) or they'll continue as normal and PS3 owners will start getting 'previews' of what's to come.

I'm thinking they'll slow down the Wii releases.

Well, if you have the other three on-stage slots filled, and nobody is physically singing, then they can't swap in that scenario either. If a swap would happen but the avatar is being used by a player, then there won't be a swap. First goes to drums, second to guitar, and I'd guess third to bass/keys. But if they're all being used, it won't happen.

Give it an hour or so for the data to update. As long as you entered the code and relinked, it should pop up correctly eventually. Some have complained about it not working, but I haven't seen anything recently about it.

There doesn't actually have to be an accelerometer in the mic for that. I'm using a cheapo Guitar Hero mic and I barely have to move it for it to register as a hit. I can also activate star power by shaking it... or sometimes by sitting quietly.
