Haha, he played Myth with you, no kidding? But yeah, I totally understand what you're saying, and when I heard he was a programmer, I think I felt the same way.
Myth had a pretty small community.. pretty much everyone knew everyone else. These were the fairly early days of the mainstream internet, and even earlier days of online gaming, so you really got to know pretty much everyone. So it's not like we were inseperable buddies.. but yeah we blew each other up quite a few times.
A good number of the guys working on Halo now were Myth gamers.. the company was extremely awesome back then (more than it is now), and when cream rose to the top they made a job offer.
If I was a better map maker/coder back then I mighta been able to ride the wave.. but that just ain't how it worked out.
This thread was like punching yourself in the balls for a half hour, after the first fifteen minutes you are confused as to why you are still punching yourself in the balls. But you go another fifteen out of principle.
Why can't we just agree that some people like some games and other people don't? Why do people have to argue over whether it was good or not? Apparently it was good enough to gain kudos off some people, and others didn't enjoy it. Surely it's that simple?

You didn't really read the thread did you 'haq?
Everyone agreed that some people do and don't like the game and that's fine.
The problem (and numerous pages of argument) arose when people suggested the game was ruining the industry because it caused shooter clones to flood the market like that was some new phenomena or someone hating the game just because he hated some people that happened to love the game.
The master chief's armor was a very cool way to make the gameplay of your typical FPS more logical and believable. No longer were you supposed to believe you were just a guy who could get shot a lot and not even flinch. Thanks, Half-Life! Halo 2 expanded upon this with the recharging armor concept. Even better! Plus, the master chief is just cool. Halo 2 kind of f'ed this up by making you play the dumb elite covenant dude sometimes.
Killing the covenant was really fun. Good environments (minus the ship bits) in which to kill them. Good weapons with which to kill them. It was just satisfying to kill them in Halo. Halo 2 kind of f'd this up a bit. In lots of shooters, it's just not FUN to kill the enemy. Halo got this right.
The warthog just pwns. Yeehaw! Great driving controls and physics for most of the vehicles.
Anyway, I could keep going, but I won't. Halo was just a fun game. Was it the best game ever? Nope. Was Halo 2 a little bit less fun? Yeah, to me it was. Iis the PS2 a hugely overrated console, and is Sony a hugely overrated electronics brand? Yes. Do I hope the PS3 fails miserably and teaches Sony about being complacent and greedy. Take a guess...
Seriously, though. It was just a SOLID, immersive game. It wasn't THE BEST at anything, but it did almost EVERYTHING well.

My comment was more aimed at the fact that every time we have a Halo thread, it explodes, rather than the course of this thread in particular
Weren't there a ton of shooters prior to Halo, at least on the PC? I thought the only reason there were a lot on consoles after Halo was because Halo showed that a decent console FPS controllable with a joypad was possible to make.

Hey, I never called anyone a racist....
Did I? It was late and I was angry...

Must be a Halo thread.

You mentioned racist junior high/high school students-that qualifies for me. :P
I'm not particularly aggravated, heh.
