Dragon Quest VI: Realms of Revelation dated for NA release on February 14! Following in the footsteps of the fantastic DS remakes of DQ IV and V, this updated remake marks the first official domestic release of DQVI.

English release trailer

It will look, feel, and play similar to IV and V, and we wouldn't have it any other way. Retailing for $35, but if you preorder at U.S. GameStops, you can rock this badass blue slime plushie!

:D is right! I'm also just realizing now that DQVI is dropping on Valentine's Day this year, which is only about a month away. What better way to show your love by giving your significant other the gift of an eternally grinning slime?

I didn't realize so few people actually noticed the release date, so I changed the title and OP. Celebrate the official release! And I would strongly recommend preordering wherever you can, because given the fairly dismal sales performances of both IV and V, you might have a hard time finding this down the road. :(

I'm so looking forward to metal slime hunting, so I can raise about 4-5 levels within 10 minutes... I'm serious about that one, I'm friggin' stoked over here :D

One of my favorite parts of the original game is where you
take a test to become a knight, you have a chance to leave the tower right before the boss fight, but if you do, Gassan (or whatever his name is... purple mohawk dude...) beats the guy and becomes a knight instead *laughs*

EDIT: Also, DQVI's protagonists are among the better designed DQ characters, specifically the Hero and Mireille (sp?)

Man, it's been so long since I've played it... plus I only got to a certain point in the game, (I was about, oh, 9 hours in, excluding the grinding) before I (unintentionally) found interest in a different game.

But I forget, was there some enemies that leveled with you?

    I think it's because:
Someone joins you, making that leveling not as useful since you'd have to do it again.

7 had the class system wherein if you were overleveled, you'd stop gaining skills from your jobs. So in 7 it was fairly important to keep yourself as low a level as possible (there were attacks that would end fights and count as fights for class skills but not for XP, you abused those until the resident Slime Forest)...

DS ports of PS1 remakes, then.
I thought they made the dungeons smaller and sped up the pace for the DS versions?

I don't even know that I should spoiler this, since it's only gameplay stuff, but just to be safe:
Nah, nothing like that. DQ6 just has the same sort of class system as 7 where if you're overleveled you won't gain ranks in your class and therefore you won't learn new skills and spells. The Desert Tower is the first place with either no level cap or with a really, really high level cap so it's the first place it's "safe" to grind.

You can also beat this game without grinding at all, except for maybe at one specific point. Just remember, if you think the game is "grindy", you only have yourself to blame.

Same here! Some times I like grinding!

Speaking of DQ 8. In this game we have Barbara, who has been renamed Ashlynn for this remake, who is a big prototype of Jessica (plus the heroes understated, somewhat tragic love interest)

It's rather ambiguous either way, and you could easily assume either/neither/both of them are, but I think a slightly stronger argument could generally be made for Barbara/Ashlynn. But again, neither of them are particularly fleshed out.

*shrugs* I only assumed it because She is one of the few characters shown on the cover of the original game (along with the Hero and Hassan/Carver).

    Not to mention
She, along with the Hero and Hassan tried to defeat Mudou at the beginning of the game, implying they were good friends before losing their memories.

I've heard about a DQ6 manga released in Japan that went into heavier details about the characters relationships. Hero/Barbara is canon in it at least (and she gets to stay at the end) and Carver(Hasan) has a one-sided flirty relationship with Milly.

Plus, I tend to think the fact that the hero is the only one of the party who actually sees her off at the end of the game, could imply this as well.

Honestly, in Dragon Quest the only time I needed to grind was a certain boss in DQ6. I most likely would have had to grind for a boss or two in DQ7 but I was already always so overpowered in that one that I can't really say for sure (although, if you get Sword Dance on all your mans, the challenge kinda evaporates). Then again, it's been a while since I've played DQ1 and 2 so I probably had to do some time leveling in those, too, and I just don't remember it.

Yeah, generally every boss gives you ample time to prepare for it, and usually by then you and your party should have some skills to get you by. But sometimes there's a case where a boss is so annoying that you need a certain spell or certain equipment, so you end up grinding for exp. or money.

Dragon Quest IV's final boss is a sterling example of how much grinding can help you. I remember that by the end of the fight, even with all my buffs and healing, my MP was simply drained by the end of the fight, and I nearly lost.

But the general rule of thumb is that if you gain 3-4 levels between every two dungeons, you should be good to go.
