Classy Flask Beverages

precisionkprecisionk Registered User regular
edited February 2007 in Help / Advice Forum
So I have this top notch flask, just sitting here, that I plan to fill with some beverage. Now I am NOT a rum or vodka fan, but I am looking for a very smooth, classy beverage to fill it with.

Definitely has to be something generally everyone will like as well as I.

Suggestions welcome.

Whiskey. That's about your only choice, really.

A high quality whiskey (I like Johnny Walker Black) would do well to fill such a flask. Vodka's are generally bad for flasks as they aren't good warm, but whiskey's do the job fairly well. Hennessy if you're you like good quality cognac (I know a friend who swears by this, not cheap though)

    Whiskey!

Maker's Mark or Crown Royal are my favorites.

Johnny Walker Black is really nice, although I prefer it on ice. Dalwhinnie is a really smooth single malt with a hint of honey and heather, nothing to offensive and a good single for someone new to whisky. Personally, however, for hip flask situations I tend to go for something stronger like Ardbeg Very Young or Talisker - something with more of a warming kick, salty or peaty.

Never had a cognac, what is the taste like?

Talisker. Fits with the whole "a nip to ward off the cold" idea that flasks have.

I'd say G+T, but I've had troubles with G+T hip flasks before. I can never get it right so pretty much it end up straight gin with a *splash* of tonic. No one like Gin breath.

Dissarono (sp?) or some like beverage might fit the bill for you. Dr. Peppery taste.

As for getting the gin and tonic ratios right, just fill the flask with water and then dump that in a glass. Then you can see for yourself just exactly how much liquid fits in there. I make the drink in the glass first and then poor it in the flask with one of those thingmajigs... what are they called? damn. Well hopefully you know what I'm talking about anyway.

I find bushmills to be a bit too peppery for my taste.

Jameson's is my whiskey of choice. The 12 year is excellent and the 18 is just outstanding...however, I'm willing to drink to the standard as it's often what I can afford.

But yea..for a flask? Whiskey or bourbon.

    That's about it really.

Dr Pepper taste? Well I do love some Dr. Pepper.

Definitely going to have to try Jameson's, as I have heard good things.

As far as Scotch goes I'm quite a fan of Glenmorangie but if you're willing to spend a bit more I really like the Glenfiddich 18 year. Both of these are quite easy for someone who doesn't drink a lot of Whiskey to drink (such as myself). Both are pretty smooth by my reckoning.

Major :^: to the Glenfiddich 18yr. Definitely pricey though.

Made this exact same thread about 2 weeks ago for the engraved flasks I purchased for my groomsmen and got the same advice you're getting.

I didn't like any of the suggestions (sorry, guys), so my stepdad suggested Dr. McGillicuddy's Vanilla. It was the perfect choice. I suggest you try it as well.

Yup. It was great. It tasted great warm, and even gave you a little warm feeling which was awesome in the middle of winter.

I'll second the scotch or scotch whiskey suggestions.

I'd offer that Lagavulin is my favorite "warming" scotch.
It's not for everyone though, very smoky/peaty.

The only other two whiskies suitably fiery and smoky to carry in a flask, especially during wintertime, are the affordably priced Knob Creek and rather more expensive George T. Stagg.

JWB may be a benchmark for blends, but it's far from a high quality whisky.

One of the guys on my last ski trip had a flask full of sloe gin. It was delicious.

Personally my flask is full of Sambuca, the only problem with that is teh sugar gets in the thread of the lid and makes it impossible to open.

seem like kinda a waste of good scotch to muck about with a flask.

I'd recomend bourbon. Frequently a bit more kick, more taste, and cheaper pricetag, all works out to being something that you won't mind having go a slight bit off because of repeatedly temperture change, increased expoure to air and being in metal. Still pleasant enough to drink.

The idea is to not let it sit in the flask long enough for the metal to impart any unwanted flavor noticably. Which would take days or even weeks to happen. And while bourbon may have "more kick, more taste and a cheaper pricetag", the extra kick and flavor (which does not mean better) is because it's usually bottled at a higher ABV than most Scotch and it's cheaper because it's fermented from at least 51% corn and isn't imported. There's nothing wrong with putting Scotch in a flask. And remember, the title of the thread is Classy Flask Beverages.

I'm wondering this too. I picked one up and customized it myself (It says "BAD MOTHER FUCKER" a la pulp fiction) but then realized that it's totally useless because to take it anywhere, I have to take a car, and if I have it in a car, that's an open container and then I'm fucked if I get pulled over.

I know its still not exactly legal but when i have a half full bottle of what ever, i just toss it in the back of my trunk. Less of a chance its gonna be found and it fairly obvious that you weren't drinking and driving if they do somehow see it. Sure they can still consider that driving with an open container but if the cop isn't an asshole, you might get away with it.

I've talked to a couple local cops, they really didn't have any problems with it as long as your not over the legal limit. Its not like i drive around every day with trunk full of booze. Just if im out at a friends house and we have a little of something left over and i want to take it home for later, i'll just wrap it up and toss it in the trunk. If you feel if the prospect isnt remotely worth the risk, then simple don't do it.

EDIT: Now that i actually take the time to look it up, im all that sure its even illegal.

Uhh, I've never, ever heard of a half bottle of liquor stored in the trunk being considered an open container. I'm pretty sure those laws only cover containers accessible to the driver. Maybe if it's in the back of a van, and you've got friends in the back seat, then they'd consider that still open container. But in a locked trunk? How is the driver even drinking from that?

Sorry, that just doesn't make sense to me.

For a flask though, I think a rum or whiskey is a cool thing to have, but only if it's not crap. Also, don't listen to anyone badmouthing bourbon. Bourbon is fucking awesome.

I like carrying around a flask of Knob Creek bourbon. It tends to get taken out at karaoke, or other social gatherings, where it gets passed around, frequently pressed upon unsuspecting Japanese who have not been exposed to 100 proof sipping liquor.
