It's not necessarily that you meant it as an insult, but that it's used so frequently as a pejorative, to throw it around lightly as a joke without a suitable context can be troubling.

you can be nice as hell to black people, but throwing the n-word around like it isn't a thing is still going to raise some eyebrows
and see, I can't believe you're actually comparing the two words
that you're actually saying tranny is as hateful as the n-word
I mean, I realize that it apparently is to you
and I can't change your experience, but I definitely haven't seen that
I'm just disappointed that some people that I thought knew me better than that either don't or that they're completely willing to ignore who I am and just focus on the word I used
I also of course realize that there are plenty of people I couldn't give two shits about that actually think I'm just an asshole

This isn't about you, Dru. It's about invoking an emotional response from people when using certain words, regardless of the intent behind it. It's not a wholly rational response, and even using it in seemingly harmless context is still going to offend some people whom you consider otherwise rational and reasonable.
You're not necessarily an asshole for offending people this way, unless you make zero effort to be more a little more sensitive in that regard.

There isn't a whole lotta hate speech around me, that I recognize anyway
Like, nobody even calls stupid things gay anymore
It's like we got our fill and now we moved on
I really like my circle of friends
I thought most people had moved past it but I my stepdad used it as kind of a pejorative and I was disappointed. I also know my stepbrothers (other side of the family) call things gay all of the time still.

You've never seen it ever? Really?
I've seen bro used as hate speech. So are we going to get all bent out of shape whenever someone calls someone a bro? My point was simply that I haven't seen tranny used primarily as hate speech and so I was somewhat surprised that people assumed that's how I intended it based on my history here. Obviously I was wrong. Obviously people do think I'm capable of being that bigoted. Oh well.
