How common are cabs in Boston? Are they browsing the streets or is it something you have to call in? I doubt I would take one since I don't mind walking. Just curious.

Cabs are everywhere downtown, and Faneuil Hall has at least one cab stand as do the hotels near by.
I heard that getting a cab from a bar after last call was hard because drivers don't want you puking in their car. Also, I will be going solo as well, since my friends from the pre-pax dinner don't drink. Well... one does, but unfortunately he's 20... silly laws >)
I have never had trouble getting a cab after the bars close in Boston.
This brings me to point 2: if you can't do these things (as I shamefully was once unable to do) they will leave your behind on the curb.
But no worries, no one's going to let you get left behind. Plus, as long as it isn't cold that night, Boston's a very small city and the walking distance isn't actually that great.

Along the lines of costumes...is it wise for me to be thinking about bringing a plush Pocket Monster with me to this? I would have a messenger bag to keep it in (as it peeks out the top). I don't know if I would want to have worry about that, but then again, I was fine during Halloween with it and drinking. Heh.

If you think you can keep up with it it should be fine, you're the one who knows how drunk you're probably going to get and how good at keeping up with your belongings you are. Some people get wander onto the highway drunk and some of us stay at just barely buzzed, there's no GET CRUNK requirement or anything.
I don't know why you're on the fence.
