I wonder if the "if a business treats me like a thief it's okay for people to steal from them" concept applies to, say, a Kennedy Fried Chicken restaurant that conducts all transactions through bulletproof glass.
Why oh why do people still need to be reminded that copyright infringement is not theft?
True. We rarely punish thieves that harshly.
After having been stolen from I can see why they used to chop motherfuckers hands off for it. Come home to a place missing shit and you're like "where's my motherfucking meat cleaver I'm taking off someones eating hand."
When my super sweet bike was stolen from me my first thought was "fucking immigrant gang shits stealing my stuff - fuckers need to all die."
Intellectually I recognised that was wrong, but I really wanted to hurt someone for the few days after it happened.
And Alan from Two and a Half Men would be dead, too. Or living on the street. Dear god is he annoying, lazy, and greedy, and how he managed to hold on to that hot redhead for as long as he did is unimaginable.
Two and a Half Men made me realize something
I don't think I can watch sitcoms anymore
Apparently TV with actual plots and character development has broken me
Sure you can. Only it has to be not retarded like The Office, Modern Family, 30 Rock, etc.
i'm not really sure about the morality of the profit motive, though i think that a basic agreement on ownership has some commonly-understood moral weight. when someone steals your bike or breaks your car window, you and others are likely to understand this as fundamentally wrong - even if you're a member of a hated, privileged class.
i do think that in general the profit motive is essential in running an economy. competition is a pretty fantastic tool in terms of putting out appealing product at accessible prices. i don't think it precludes regulation or government support or whatever else - i don't think that ownership and markets are somehow morally inviolate the way a lot of libertarians do - but i do think they're pragmatic and have some moral grounding.
i don't like piracy because i don't think that people are entitled to steal creative product. whether there is a corporation involved, it takes a lot of people to make an album or movie or game, and without the expectation of being able to pay salaries and investments, you couldn't make anything larger than hobbies or dilettante efforts.
I think it's a meaningful distinction because I'm a consequentialist so, unconcerned as I am with moral principles that need to hold true logically across various circumstances, I'm free to differentiate actions to whatever degree of granularity I want to
In this regard, theft from corporations is distinct from theft from individuals because theft from corporations hurts no one (to an extent -- obviously if the amount of theft eclipsed actual sales, then workers would lose their jobs and this is bad, but that's not a realistic concern, even in the media industries. Even in music, a lot of calculations estimate that roughly an equal number of people remain employed in the industry because piracy has fueled a much larger live music scene. Certainly more artists can make a viable living now than before), and benefits the thief. Whereas stealing from a person hurts the individual victim. Especially if that victim is poor, working class, or middle class.
I mean, flat-out I will say it's much more moral to steal from a rich person than a poor person, or even a middle-class person. Marginal utility. If you don't believe this then I find any commitment to, say, progressive taxation to be suspect.
well
being a consequentialist kind of denies you the ability to generalize things like "stealing from a corporation is okay" because sometimes it does lead to negative consequences - from declined investment in worthwhile creative projects to people being laid off or having their salary cut, etc. hell, even advocation of theft from corporations encourages a loathsome subclass of people who feel entitled to things that they have really no right to.
this is to say that the harm is on both sides of the ledger here. i don't see any reasonable justification for it outside of "piracy is okay because fuck corporations maaaan"

When my shit was stolen I figured it was some methed out fucking twiggy white person. Like a week later a dude was gunned down attempting to rob someone else and I honestly felt joy reading the article.
Which is why I'm a republican.

hopefully that will give that godawful joke some fucking context
have you not played the original?
I don't play PC games. I lack the hardware.
it's on the 360 too
anyway, "the cake is a lie" is actually part of this really creepy and neat reveal about the true nature of things in the game, it's not as asinine as the joke
I've only got a PS3. Hopefully they'll re-release it, it's got a great rep.
The Orange Box came out for the PS3, right?
You should at least rent that, because Portal is both really worth playing and rather short.
Having tried it, it's really hard to play on PS3. That said, if Fluffy wants a copy he can have mine of that and of Oblivion.

Every single piracy argument is derived from this. It usually takes 4 to 5 justifications, but really, distill all piracy arguments and that is exactly what you get.
You probably could...it would just be an entirely different system with it's own pitfalls to deal with. Honestly I think we're very quickly approaching a post-piracy age. A good many game companies are figuring out that with the advent of things like Steam, variable pricing, and the free to play model, that they can very effectively deal with pirates. Same with musicians, we're starting to see completely free downloads of lots of albums, because effectively the music is the cheapest part of the over all package, and great for PR.
except even with the advent of reasonably-priced, hyperconvenient purchasing of quality products, you still have the same coterie of hackers and gamers and complainers for whom it's just not "theirs" until they can torrent it.
i'm really not up on the torrent scene, but one of my neighbors a few years ago was. in spite of, say, itunes, basically every album ever created was instantly available.

Seems to be the gist of it "I can't afford these games, but I want to play them, and they have a lot more money then me, so its ok."
I recall someone once saying "I buy the ones I like which means I still contribute." Head scratching logic.

I do love me some Office, but I don't really consider The Office a sitcom for some reason
It's a situational comedy but there's no dumbass awkward pauses so I can hear the live studio audience cackle like hyenas.
So I guess it's not sitcoms, just studio audiences in sitcoms that I have lost the ability to tolerate.
I feel obliged to inform the medical school of this because nobody is allowed in with any such sickness - but I also really want to go in tomorrow.
So you know your sick and you are told you shouldn't show up ill, but you want to anyway? Damn it daxon didn't they design you with a morality chip?
It malfunctions every now and then. Needs a bit of a nudge in the right direction.
By hospital policy anyone with diarrhea or vomiting has to stay away for 48 hours after it has stopped before they're allowed back in.
This includes absolutely everyone: visitors, doctors, nurses, etc.
I'll remember this the next time my PA mother in law wants me do anything. "Sorry I can't come over I just had some wicked shotgun shits, better stay away 48 hours thats the way they do it in hospitals in bork land."

Honestly, we all have cognitive justifications for less than ideal behaviors, otherwise we would be ethically autistic and never leave our homes. I just want piracy folk to recognize that they are making a distortion to get what they want.

I think you'll find that here we're treated as adults and allowed to make our own decisions - whether good or bad - and as long as we pass the exams they really don't give a shit.
Students at the Uni of Oklahoma are treated like utter children. Pretty dumb behaviour all around imo.
edit: I would freak THE FUCK OUT if I wasn't allowed alcohol in my room or privacy and a right for raids not to take place.
I mean, really freak the fuck out. I would learn all the laws so I can shout them at whoever's trying to infringe on my person so they'll fuck off.
The only honest pirate I've ever met simply said "I want to play this game and my desire to play the game is greater than my desire to not steal. As I can't afford it I'm left with one option".
See I just I read Will's rant about gamers as sarasm
Because that's the only way I could read it since I'm afraid if I cringed that hard while rolling my eyes I might break something
ope i am serious
gamers are fucking loathsome as a class
like, worse than pro sports obsessives
That's cool. I guess we probably just have a disconnect on what the term gamer covers.
To me it covers "people who play and enjoy video games in their spare time."
I'm guessing here but I assume to you it's more "13 year old jackasses on XBL screaming racial slurs while simultaneously downloading torrents asd bitching about DRM on internet foums."
Imma probably still read it as sarcasm though due to that being something I can find amusing given my definition of gamer as opposed to utterly terrible :P
welll
most of the teams i run into in LoL are assholes who throw around racial slurs like they're getting paid by the word
and when keep my mic open in xbl, i get the same thing
i just don't know what it is about the gaming subculture, but it's fucking horrible. like, i can't think of a more unpleasant group. like, even neo-nazis or gangbangers will at least give you a little space if you don't stare at them wrong.

I dunno I pretty honestly admit when I do something horrible, its usually out of lazyness or outright dislike of someone, there are times I find the humor of the moment is more important then social tact of it. Like that 9/11 joke.

how many times have I gotta tell you? I'm borkistani but I live in England.
England is much more anal about health and safety and stuff - which is reasonable to be honest because such rules do keep infection and shit out of the hospital.

I don't think I've heard the "piracy is ok because I'm sticking it to the Man/Corp" offline for a while. Usually I see it mentioned online, or here. Most people I know seem to focus more on the perceived flaws of the copyright system

How I Met Your Mother is the only one that I still watch, sort of. Even then, there are probably longer shots, and there's actual comedic talent there.
One of the guys I raid with actively brags about how little social interaction he has in real life and gives other people shit when they have to take care of a kid real quick or something, he lives with his mother.
I love it when people go "intellectual property is wrong!" then I ask them "well how do you propose drug companies develop new drugs to further our medicine without IP?"
Then they shut right up.
Or the start babbling a load a bullshit at which point I know I can safely ignore them.
