paul rudd is such a dreamboat. my perfect romcom would star paul rudd, hugh grant, john cusack, and a buncha lady actors whatever the female parts don't matter at that point

I'm over John Cusack. He has aged poorly and I don't think I've liked anything he's done since, um, Better Off Dead maybe?

High Fidelity! it is like the best example of chick flick for guys

and 2012 john cusack was so ridiculously ridiculous

When it comes to Hornby novels made into film I'm more into "About a Boy". I just see a lot of wasted potential when I see John Cusack. Like, man, he could have been an American Hugh Grant if he was in more successful movies.

Hugh Grant's wardrobe in About A Boy is phenomenal, but also the soundtrack by Badly Drawn Boy.

Get the fuck out now! You are a terrible person who will die a horrible death, alone and cold. Colin Firth + Hugh Grant+ Bill Nighy + Alan Rickman = AWESOME

nup. the crash-style "melange of unrelated characters" mode of narrative never works anyway, let alone in a romance where it's pretty well integral that you have two leads with sizzling chemistry to battle the odds towards eachother's hearts. in a romance you, the viewer, have to fall in love along with the protagonist: love actually asks you to fall in love five or six times, and it ain't gonna happen. it's a poor idea executed poorly, and by far the worst of a pretty mediocre batch of british rom-coms

Wrong. It's a montage of all the different types of love out there and explores some of the nuances of it.

you can't explore anything nuanced with a storyline that barely breaches fifteen minutes. that's what love actually is, a handful of stunted, hackneyed 'love stories' that aren't given nearly enough time to bloom into anything meaningful

Wrong. You just can't detect it because of your cold and unloving heart.

A Midsummer Night's Dream does a pretty good job of it

and richard curtis ain't no shakespeare

i had to pause it like 40 times because paul rudd was so awkward

It freaked me out how much Paul Rudd was like a friend of mine from high school. Like, he talks and acts exactly like that ("get ready for some iTunes ack-shee-own!"), except without the hot fiance. That movie was great. Lots of Apple product placement tho.

I like Two Weeks Notice a whole lot too - perfect Hugh Grant part and dialogue. I don't have to almost feel sorry for him like in Notting Hill, I can just watch him be british and goofy.

This is one of the best movies ever made. Next to Some Like It Hot, it's my favorite comedy.

I like this movie but only really the Katherine Hepburn stuff
There's the part that's just Jimmy Stewart trying to dig dirt that just isn't as interesting

It isn't unless romcoms now include things like breakups and deep depression and eventual moving on.

Like Lars and the Real Girl's theme isn't about the actual romance between lars and the doll, it's about people's reaction and then the eventual loss of a loved one and moving on.

500 Days isn't about the overcoming obstacles in humorous ways to attain the final goal of bliss. It has more in common with the theme of loss and moving on and green pastures after a relationship that goes south.

To call it a romantic comedy just because theres humor and a relationship is absurd.

Once is a great film and their music is fantastic. (I had a chance to see them live last year but things conspired against me, I was sad. :() I could never get into The Frames but Glen Hansard has very possibly my favourite singing voice of anyone ever.

My favourite romantic comedy however is:

    shaunofthedead.jpg

(And Hot Fuzz, which may as well be a romantic comedy too! Danny/Nick. <3)

I also love Love, Actually. And by far my favourite of the "adolescent boy/boy romance" is a British film called "Beautiful Thing" - it manages to avoid most of the more annoying tropes of the genre and is just really good!

Um, the entire first half of the movie, maybe even the first 3/4, is him developing a romantic relationship with Summer through humorous actions. Just because she breaks up with him doesn't make the whole movie about loss.

The Proposal was okay, though they just sort of forget about the plot toward the end.

You get to see Sandra Bullock as naked as possible for a PG-13 for an extended period though.
